Job 28,29
Job Tells of Earth's Treasures
1 "Certainly there is a (F1)mine for silver
And a place (F2)for refining gold.
2 "Iron is taken from the dust,
And copper is smelted from rock.
3 "Man puts an end to darkness,
And (C1)to the farthest limit he searches out
The rock in gloom and deep shadow.
4 "He (F1)sinks a shaft away from (F2)inhabited areas,
Forgotten by the foot;
They hang and swing, away from people.
5 "(F1)From the earth comes food,
And underneath, it is turned over like fire.
6 "Its rocks are the (F1)source of sapphires,
And its dust contains gold.
7 "No bird of prey knows the path,
Nor has the falcon's eye caught sight of it.
8 "The (F1)proud animals have not trodden it,
Nor has the lion passed over it.
9 "He puts his hand on the flint;
He overturns the mountains at the (F1)base.
10 "He carves out channels through the rocks,
And his eye sees anything precious.
11 "He dams up the streams from (F1)flowing,
And brings to light what is hidden.
The Search for Wisdom Is Harder
12 "But (C1)where can wisdom be found?
And where is the place of understanding?
13 "(C1)Mankind does not know its value,
Nor is it found in the land of the living.
14 "The ocean depth says, 'It is not in me';
And the sea says, 'It is not with me.'
15 "(C1)Pure gold cannot be given in exchange for it,
Nor can silver be weighed as its price.
16 "It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir,
In precious onyx, or sapphire.
17 "(C1)Gold or glass cannot equal it,
Nor can it be exchanged for articles of pure gold.
18 "Coral and crystal are not to be mentioned;
And the acquisition of (C1)wisdom is more valuable than pearls.
19 "The topaz of (F1)Cush cannot equal it,
Nor can it be valued in (C1)pure gold.
20 "(C1)Where then does wisdom come from?
And where is this place of understanding?
21 "It is hidden from the eyes of every living creature,
And concealed from the birds of the sky.
22 "(F1)(C1)Abaddon and Death say,
'With our ears we have heard a report of it.'
23 "(C1)God understands its way,
And He knows its place.
24 "For He (C1)looks to the ends of the earth;
He sees everything under the heavens.
25 "When He imparted (C1)weight to the wind,
And (C2)assessed the waters by measure,
26 When He made a (C1)limit for the rain,
And a course for the (C2)thunderbolt,
27 Then He saw it and declared it;
He established it and also searched it out.
28 "And to mankind He said, 'Behold, the (C1)fear of the Lord, that is wisdom;
And to turn away from evil is understanding.'"
Job's Past Was Glorious
1 Job again took up his (C1)discourse and said,
2 "Oh that I were as in months gone by,
As in the days when God (C1)watched over me;
3 When (C1)His lamp shone over my head,
And (C2)by His light I walked through darkness;
4 Just as I was in the days of my youth,
When the (C1)protection of God was over my tent;
5 When (F1)the Almighty was still with me,
And my children were around me;
6 When my steps were bathed in (C1)cream,
And the (C2)rock poured out streams of oil for me!
7 "When I went out to (C1)the gate of the city,
When I (F1)took my seat in the public square,
8 The young men saw me and hid themselves,
And the old men arose and stood.
9 "The leaders (C1)stopped talking
And (C2)put their hands on their mouths;
10 The voices of the prominent people were (F1)(C1)hushed,
And their (C2)tongues stuck to their palates.
11 "For when (C1)an ear heard, it called me blessed,
And when an eye saw, it testified in support of me,
12 Because I saved (C1)the poor who cried for help,
And the (C2)orphan who had no helper.
13 "The blessing of the one who (C1)was about to perish came upon me,
And I made the (C2)widow's heart sing for joy.
14 "I (C1)put on righteousness, and it clothed me;
My justice was like a robe and a headband.
15 "I was (C1)eyes to those who were blind,
And feet to those who (F1)could not walk.
16 "I was a father to (C1)the poor,
And I investigated the case which I did not know.
17 "I (C1)broke the jaws of the wicked
And rescued the prey from his teeth.
18 "Then I (F1)thought, 'I will die with my (F2)family,
And I will multiply my days as the sand.
19 'My (C1)root is spread out to the waters,
And (C2)dew lies on my branch all night.
20 'My glory is ever new with me,
And my (C1)bow is renewed in my hand.'
21 "To me (C1)they listened and waited,
And they kept silent for my advice.
22 "After my words (C1)they did not speak again,
And (C2)my speech dropped on them.
23 "They waited for me as for the rain,
And opened their mouths as for the late rain.
24 "I smiled at them when they did not believe,
And they did not look at (F1)my kindness ungraciously.
25 "I chose a way for them and sat as (C1)chief,
And lived as a king among the troops,
As one who (C2)comforted the mourners.
Matthew 13:1-30
Chapter 13
Jesus Teaches in Parables
1 On that day Jesus had gone out of (C1)the house and was sitting (C2)by the sea.2 And large crowds gathered to Him, so (C1)He got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd was standing on the beach.
3 And He told them many things in (C1)parables, saying, "Behold, the sower went out to sow;4 and as he sowed, some seeds fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate them up.5 "Others fell on the rocky places, where they did not have much soil; and they sprang up immediately, because they had no depth of soil.6 "But after the sun rose, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.7 "Others fell (F1)among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them out.8 "But others fell on the good soil and yielded a crop, some a (C1)hundred, some sixty, and some thirty times as much.9 "(C1)The one who has ears, (F1)let him hear."
An Explanation for Parables
10 And the disciples came up and said to Him, "Why do You speak to them in parables?"11 And (F1)Jesus answered them, "(C1)To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted.12 "(C1)For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him.13 "Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while (C1)seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.14 "And (F1)in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says, '(F2)(C1)YOU SHALL KEEP ON LISTENING, (F3)BUT SHALL NOT UNDERSTAND;
AND (F4)YOU SHALL KEEP ON LOOKING, (F3)BUT SHALL NOT PERCEIVE;
15 (C1)FOR THE HEART OF THIS PEOPLE HAS BECOME DULL,
WITH THEIR EARS THEY SCARCELY HEAR,
AND THEY HAVE CLOSED THEIR EYES,
OTHERWISE THEY MIGHT SEE WITH THEIR EYES,
HEAR WITH THEIR EARS,
UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART, AND RETURN,
AND I WOULD HEAL THEM.'
The Sower Explained
18 "(C1)Listen then to the parable of the sower.19 "When anyone hears (C1)the (F1)word of the kingdom and does not understand it, (C2)the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one sown with seed beside the road.20 "The one sown with seed on the rocky places, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy;21 yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution occurs because of the (F1)word, immediately he (F2)(C1)falls away.22 "And the one sown with seed among the thorns, this is the one who hears the word, and the anxiety of (C1)the (F1)world and the (C2)deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it (F2)becomes unfruitful.23 "But the one sown with seed on the good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces, some (C1)a hundred, some sixty, and some thirty times as much."
Weeds among Wheat
24 Jesus presented another parable to them, saying, "(C1)The kingdom of heaven (F1)is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.25 "But while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed (F1)weeds among the wheat, and left.26 "And when the (F1)wheat sprouted and produced grain, then the weeds also became evident.27 "And the slaves of the landowner came and said to him, 'Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? (F1)How then does it have weeds?'28 "And he said to them, '(F1)An enemy has done this!' The slaves (*)said to him, 'Do you want us, then, to go and gather them up?'29 "But he (*)said, 'No; while you are gathering up the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them.30 'Allow both to grow together until the harvest; and at the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, "First gather up the weeds and bind them in bundles to burn them; but (C1)gather the wheat into my barn."'"<
