Job 41,42
God's Power Shown in Creatures
1 "(F1)Can you drag out (F2)(C1)Leviathan with a fishhook,
And press down his tongue with a rope?
2 "Can you (C1)put a (F1)rope in his nose,
And pierce his jaw with a (F2)hook?
3 "Will he make many pleas to you,
Or will he speak to you gentle words?
4 "Will he make a covenant with you?
Will you take him as a servant forever?
5 "Will you play with him as with a bird,
And tie him down for your young girls?
6 "Will the (F1)traders bargain for him?
Will they divide him among the merchants?
7 "Can you fill his skin with harpoons,
Or his head with fishing spears?
8 "Lay your hand on him.
Remember the battle; (F1)you will not do it again!
9 "(F1)Behold, (F2)your expectation is false;
Will (F3)you be hurled down even at the sight of him?
10 "No one is so reckless that he dares to (C1)stir him;
Who then is he who opposes Me?
11 "Who has (C1)been first to give to Me, that I should repay him?
Whatever is (C2)under the entire heaven is Mine.
12 "I will not be silent about his limbs,
Or his mighty strength, or his graceful frame.
13 "Who can (F1)strip off his outer covering?
Who can (F2)pierce his double (F3)armor?
14 "Who can open the doors of his face?
Around his teeth there is terror.
15 "His (F1)strong scales are his pride,
Locked as with a tight seal.
16 "One is so close to another
That no air can come between them.
17 "They are joined one to another;
They clasp each other and cannot be separated.
18 "His sneezes flash forth light,
And his eyes are like the (C1)eye of dawn.
19 "From his mouth go burning torches;
Sparks of fire leap forth.
20 "From his nostrils smoke goes out
As from a boiling pot and burning reeds.
21 "His breath sets coals aglow,
And a flame goes forth from his mouth.
22 "In his neck dwells strength,
And dismay leaps before him.
23 "The folds of his flesh are joined together,
Firm and immovable on him.
24 "His heart is as firm as a stone,
And as firm as a lower millstone.
25 "When he rises up, the (F1)mighty are afraid;
Because of the crashing they are bewildered.
26 "The sword that reaches him cannot (F1)prevail,
Nor the spear, the dart, or the javelin.
27 "He regards iron as straw,
Bronze as rotten wood.
28 "The (F1)arrow cannot make him flee;
Slingstones are turned into stubble for him.
29 "Clubs are regarded as stubble;
He laughs at the rattling of the javelin.
30 "His underparts are like sharp pieces of pottery;
He (F1)spreads out like a threshing sledge on the mud.
31 "He makes the depths boil like a pot;
He makes the sea like a jar of ointment.
32 "Behind him he illuminates a pathway;
One would think the deep to be gray-haired.
33 "(C1)Nothing on (F1)earth is like him,
One made without fear.
34 "(F1)He looks on everything that is high;
He is king over all the (C1)sons of pride."
Job's Confession
1 Then Job answered the LORD and said,
2 "I know that (C1)You can do all things,
And that no plan is impossible for You.
3 'Who is this who (C1)conceals advice without knowledge?'
Therefore I have declared that which I did not understand,
Things (C2)too wonderful for me, which I do not know.
4 'Please listen, and I will speak;
I will (C1)ask You, and You instruct me.'
5 "I have (C1)heard of You by the hearing of the ear;
But now my (C2)eye sees You;
6 Therefore I retract,
And I repent, sitting on dust and ashes."
God Is Displeased with Job's Friends
7 It came about after the LORD had spoken these words to Job, that the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "My wrath is kindled against you and against your two friends, because you have not spoken of Me what is trustworthy, (C1)as My servant Job has.8 "Now therefore, take for yourselves (C1)seven bulls and seven rams, and go to My servant Job, and offer up a (C2)burnt offering for yourselves, and My servant Job will (C3)pray for you. (C4)For I will (F1)accept him so as not to do with you as your foolishness deserves, because you have not spoken of Me what is trustworthy, as My servant Job has."9 So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite went and did as the LORD told them; and the LORD (F1)accepted Job.
God Restores Job's Fortunes
10 The LORD also (C1)restored the fortunes of Job when he prayed for his friends, and the LORD increased double all that Job had.11 Then all his (C1)brothers, all his sisters, and all who had known him before came to him, and they ate bread with him in his house; and they (C2)sympathized with him and comforted him for all the adversities that the LORD had brought on him. And each one gave him a (F1)piece of money, and each a ring of gold.12 (C1)The LORD blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; (C2)and he had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand female donkeys.13 (C1)He also had seven sons and three daughters.14 He named the first Jemimah, the second Keziah, and the third Keren-happuch.15 In all the land no women were found as beautiful as Job's daughters; and their father gave them inheritances among their brothers.16 After this, Job lived 140 years, and saw his sons and his grandsons, four generations.17 (C1)And Job died, an old man and full of days.
Matthew 16
Chapter 16
Pharisees and Sadducees Test Jesus
1 (C1)The (C2)Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and putting Jesus to the test, they (C3)asked Him to show them a (F1)sign from heaven.2 But He replied to them, "(F1)(C1)When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.'3 "And in the morning, 'There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.' (C1)You know how to discern the (F1)appearance of the sky, but are you unable to discern the signs of the times?4 "(C1)An evil and adulterous generation wants a (F1)sign; and so a (F1)sign will not be given to it, except the sign of Jonah." And He left them and went away.
5 And the disciples came to the other side of the sea, but they had forgotten to bring any bread.6 And Jesus said to them, "Watch out and (C1)beware of the (F1)leaven of the (C2)Pharisees and Sadducees."7 They began to discuss this among themselves, saying, "He said that because we did not bring any bread."8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, "(C1)You men of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread?9 "Do you not yet understand nor remember (C1)the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets you picked up?10 "Nor (C1)the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many large baskets you picked up?11 "How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you about bread? But (C1)beware of the (F1)leaven of the (C2)Pharisees and Sadducees."12 Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the (F1)leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the (C1)Pharisees and Sadducees.
Peter's Confession of Christ
13 (C1)Now when Jesus came into the region of (C2)Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, "Who do people say that (C3)the Son of Man is?"14 And they said, "Some say (C1)John the Baptist; and others, (F1)(C2)Elijah; and still others, (F2)Jeremiah, or one of the other prophets."15 He (*)said to them, "But who do you yourselves say that I am?"16 Simon Peter answered, "You are (C1)the (F1)Christ, (C2)the Son of (C3)the living God."17 And Jesus said to him, "Blessed are you, (C1)Simon (F1)Barjona, because (C2)flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.18 "And I also say to you that you are (F1)(C1)Peter, and upon this (F2)rock I will build My church; and the gates of (C2)Hades will not overpower it.19 "I will give you (C1)the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and (C2)whatever you (F1)bind on earth (F2)shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you (F3)loose on earth (F2)shall have been loosed in heaven."20 (C1)Then He gave the disciples strict orders that they were to tell no one that He was (C2)the (F1)Christ.
Jesus Foretells His Death
21 (C1)From that time (F1)Jesus began to (F2)point out to His disciples that it was necessary for Him to go to Jerusalem and to (C2)suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and to be killed, and to be raised up on the third day.22 And yet Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "(F1)God forbid it, Lord! This shall never (F2)happen to You!"23 But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, (C1)Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on (F1)God's purposes, but men's."
Discipleship Is Costly
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, (C1)take up his cross, and follow Me.25 "For (C1)whoever wants to save his (F1)life will lose it; but whoever loses his (F1)life for My sake will find it.26 "For what good will it do a person if he gains the whole world, but (F1)forfeits his soul? Or what will a person give in exchange for his soul?27 "For the (C1)Son of Man (C2)is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and (C3)WILL THEN REPAY EVERY PERSON ACCORDING TO HIS (F1)DEEDS.
28 "Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the (C1)Son of Man (C2)coming in His kingdom."
