Genesis 44
Chapter 44
The Brothers Are Brought Back
1 (C1)Then he commanded his house steward, saying, "Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man's money in the opening of his sack.2 "And put my cup, the silver cup, in the opening of the sack of the youngest, and his money for the grain." And he did (F1)as Joseph had told him.3 (F1)As soon as it was light, the men were sent away, they with their donkeys.4 They had just left (C1)the city, and were not far away, when Joseph said to his house steward, "Up, follow the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, 'Why have you repaid evil for good?5 'Is this not that from which my lord drinks, and which he indeed uses for (C1)divination? You have done wrong in doing this!'"
6 So (F1)he overtook them and spoke these words to them.7 And they said to him, "Why does my lord say such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing!8 "Behold, (C1)the money which we found in the opening of our sacks we have brought back to you from the land of Canaan. How then could we steal silver or gold from your lord's house?9 "(C1)With whomever of your servants it is found, he shall die, and we also shall be my lord's (C2)slaves."10 So he said, "Now let it indeed be according to your words; he with whom it is found shall be my slave, but the rest of you shall be considered innocent."11 Then they hurried, each man lowered his sack to the ground, and each man opened his sack.12 And he searched, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest; and (C1)the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.13 Then they (C1)tore their clothes in grief, and when each man had loaded his donkey, they returned to (C2)the city.
14 When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house, he was still there, and (C1)they fell down to the ground before him.15 Joseph said to them, "What is this thing that you have done? Do you not know that a man who is like me can indeed practice (C1)divination?"16 So Judah said, "What can we say to my lord? What words can we speak? And how can we justify ourselves? God has found out the guilt of your servants; behold, we are my lord's (C1)slaves, both we and the one in whose (F1)possession the cup has been found."17 But he said, "Far be it from me to do this. The man in whose (F1)possession the cup has been found, he shall be my slave; but as for you, go up in peace to your father."
18 Then Judah approached him and said, "Oh my lord, may your servant please speak a word in my lord's ears, and (F1)(C1)do not be angry with your servant; for (C2)you are equal to Pharaoh.19 "(C1)My lord asked his servants, saying, 'Have you a father or a brother?'20 "And we said to my lord, 'We have an old father and (C1)a little boy born in our father's old age. Now (C2)his brother is dead, so he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.'21 "Then you said to your servants, '(C1)Bring him down to me so that I may set my eyes on him.'22 "But we said to my lord, 'The boy cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, (F1)his father would die.'23 "You said to your servants, however, '(C1)Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.'24 "So it came about when we went up to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.25 "And (C1)our father said, 'Go back, buy us a little food.'26 "But we said, 'We cannot go down. If our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down; for we cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.'27 "Then your servant my father said to us, 'You know that (C1)my wife bore me two sons;28 and the one left me, and (C1)I said, "Surely he is torn to pieces," and I have not seen him since.29 'If you also take this one from (F1)me, and harm happens to him, you will (C1)bring my gray hair down to Sheol in (F2)sorrow.'30 "So now, when I come to your servant, my father, and the boy is not with us—since (F1)(C1)our father's life is so attached to the boy's life—31 when he sees that the boy is not with us, he will die. So your servants will (C1)bring the gray hair of your servant, our father, down to Sheol in sorrow.32 "For your servant (C1)accepted responsibility for the boy from my father, saying, 'If I do not bring him back to you, then (F1)my father can let me take the blame forever.'33 "So now, please let your servant remain as a slave to my lord instead of the boy, and let the boy go up with his brothers.34 "For how shall I go up to my father if the boy is not with me? I fear that I may see the evil that would (F1)overtake my father."
Psalms 35
Chapter 35
Prayer for Rescue from Enemies.
1 Contend, LORD, with those who (C1)contend with me;
Fight against those who (C2)fight against me.
2 Take hold of (F1)(C1)buckler and shield
And rise up as (C2)my help.
3 Draw also the spear and (F1)the battle-axe to meet those who pursue me;
Say to my soul, "I am (C1)your salvation."
4 Let those be (C1)ashamed and dishonored who seek my (F1)life;
Let those be (C2)turned back and humiliated who devise evil against me.
5 Let them be (C1)like chaff before the wind,
With the angel of the LORD driving them on.
6 Let their way be dark and (C1)slippery,
With the angel of the LORD pursuing them.
7 For (C1)they (C2)hid their net for me without cause;
Without cause they dug a pit for my soul.
8 Let (C1)destruction come upon him when he is unaware,
And (C2)let the net which he hid catch him;
Let him fall into that very (C3)destruction.
9 So my soul shall (C1)rejoice in the LORD;
It shall (C2)rejoice in His salvation.
10 All my (C1)bones will say, "LORD, (C2)who is like You,
Who rescues the afflicted from one (C3)who is too strong for him,
And (C4)the afflicted and the poor from one who robs him?"
11 (C1)Malicious witnesses rise up;
They ask me things that I do not know.
12 They (C1)repay me evil for good,
To the bereavement of my soul.
13 But as for me, (C1)when they were sick, my (C2)clothing was sackcloth;
I (C3)humbled my soul with fasting,
But my (C4)prayer kept returning to (F1)me.
14 I went about as though it were my friend or brother;
I (C1)bowed down (F1)in mourning, like one who mourns for a mother.
15 But (C1)at my (F1)stumbling they rejoiced and gathered themselves together;
The (F2)(C2)afflicted people whom I did not know gathered together against me,
They (F3)(C3)slandered me without ceasing.
16 Like godless jesters at a feast,
They (C1)gnashed at me with their teeth.
17 Lord, (C1)how long will You look on?
Rescue my soul (C2)from their ravages,
My (C3)only life from the lions.
18 I will (C1)give You thanks in the great congregation;
I will (C2)praise You among a mighty people.
19 (C1)Do not let those who are wrongfully (C2)my enemies rejoice over me;
Nor let those (C3)who hate me for no reason (F1)(C4)wink maliciously.
20 For they do not speak peace,
But they devise (C1)deceitful words against those who are quiet in the land.
21 They (C1)opened their mouth wide against me;
They said, "(C2)Aha, aha! Our eyes have seen it!"
22 (C1)You have seen it, LORD, (C2)do not keep silent;
Lord, (C3)do not be far from me.
23 (C1)Stir Yourself, and awake to my right
And to my cause, my God and my Lord.
24 (C1)Judge me, LORD my God, according to Your righteousness,
And (C2)do not let them rejoice over me.
25 Do not let them say in their heart, "(C1)Aha, our desire!"
Do not let them say, "We have (C2)swallowed him up!"
26 May (C1)those be ashamed and altogether humiliated who rejoice at my distress;
May those who (C2)exalt themselves over me be (C3)clothed with shame and dishonor.
27 May those (C1)shout for joy and rejoice, who take delight in (C2)my vindication;
And (C3)may they say continually, "The LORD be exalted,
Who (C4)delights in the prosperity of His servant."
28 And (C1)my tongue shall proclaim Your righteousness
And Your praise all day long.
Luke 24:13-53
Chapter 24
13 And behold, on that very day (C1)two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, which was (F1)sixty stadia from Jerusalem.14 And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place.15 While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them.16 But (C1)their eyes were kept from recognizing Him.17 And He said to them, "What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?" And they came to a stop, looking sad.18 One of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, "Are You possibly the only one living near Jerusalem (F1)who does not know about the things that happened here in these days?"19 And He said to them, "What sort of things?" And they said to Him, "Those about (C1)Jesus the Nazarene, who proved to be a (C2)prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people,20 and how the chief priests and our (C1)rulers handed Him over to be sentenced to death, and crucified Him.21 "But we (F1)were hoping that it was He who was going to (C1)redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.22 "But also some women among us left us bewildered. (C1)When they were at the tomb early in the morning,23 and did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive.24 "And so some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see."25 And then He said to them, "(F1)You foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that (C1)the prophets have spoken!26 "(C1)Was it not necessary for the (F1)Christ to suffer these things and to come into His glory?"27 Then beginning (F1)with (C1)Moses and (F1)with all the (C2)Prophets, He explained to them the things written about Himself in all the Scriptures.
28 And they approached the village where they were going, and (C1)He gave the impression that He was going farther.29 And so they strongly urged Him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is getting toward evening, and the day (F1)is now nearly over." So He went in to stay with them.30 And it came about, when He had reclined at the table with them, that He took the bread and (C1)blessed it, and He broke it and began giving it to them.31 And then their (C1)eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from (F1)their sight.32 They said to one another, "(F1)Were our hearts not burning within us when He was speaking to us on the road, while He (C1)was (F2)explaining the Scriptures to us?"33 And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and (C1)found the eleven gathered together and (C2)those who were with them,34 saying, "(C1)The Lord has really risen and (C2)has appeared to Simon!"35 They began to relate (F1)their experiences on the road, and how (C1)He was recognized by them at the breaking of the bread.
Other Appearances
36 Now while they were telling these things, (C1)Jesus Himself suddenly stood in their midst and (*)said to them, "Peace be to you."37 But they were startled and frightened, and thought that they were looking at (C1)a spirit.38 And He said to them, "Why are you frightened, and why are doubts arising in your (F1)hearts?39 "(C1)See My hands and My feet, that (F1)it is I Myself; (C2)touch Me and see, because a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you plainly see that I have."40 And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.41 While they still (F1)(C1)could not believe it because of their joy and astonishment, He said to them, "(C2)Have you anything here to eat?"42 They served Him a piece of broiled fish;43 and He took it and (C1)ate it in front of them.
44 Now He said to them, "(C1)These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all the things that are written about Me in the (C2)Law of Moses and the Prophets and (C3)the Psalms must be fulfilled."45 Then He (C1)opened their (F1)minds to understand the Scriptures,46 and He said to them, "(C1)So it is written, that the (F1)Christ would suffer and (C2)rise from the dead on the third day,47 and that (C1)repentance (F1)for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed (F2)in His name to (C2)all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.48 "You are (C1)witnesses of these things.49 "And behold, (C1)I am sending the promise of My Father upon you; but (C2)you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."
The Ascension
50 And He led them out as far as (C1)Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them.51 While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven.52 And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy,53 and were continually in the temple (F1)praising God.
