Genesis 48

Chapter 48

Israel's Last Days

1 Now it came about after these things that (F1)Joseph was told, "Behold, your father is sick." So he took his two sons (C1)Manasseh and Ephraim with him.2 When (F1)it was told to Jacob, "Behold, your son Joseph has come to you," Israel (F2)collected his strength and sat (F3)up in the bed.3 Then Jacob said to Joseph, "(F1)(C1)God Almighty appeared to me at (C2)Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me,4 and He said to me, 'Behold, I will make you fruitful and numerous, and I will make you a multitude of peoples, and will give this land to your (F1)descendants after you as (C1)an everlasting possession.'5 "Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; (C1)Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as (C2)Reuben and Simeon are.6 "But your children that you have fathered after them shall be yours; they shall be called by the (F1)names of their brothers in their inheritance.7 "Now as for me, when I came from (C1)Paddan, (C2)Rachel died, (F1)to my sorrow, in the land of Canaan on the journey, when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath. I buried her there on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem)."

8 When Israel (C1)saw Joseph's sons, he said, "Who are these?"9 And Joseph said to his father, "(C1)They are my sons, whom God has given me here." So he said, "Bring them to me, please, so that (C2)I may bless them."10 Now (C1)the eyes of Israel were so (F1)dim from age that he could not see. And (F2)Joseph brought them close to him, and he (C2)kissed them and embraced them.11 And Israel said to Joseph, "I never (F1)expected to see your face, and behold, God has let me see your (F2)children as well!"12 Then Joseph (F1)took them from his knees, and (C1)bowed with his face to the ground.13 And Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel's left, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel's right, and brought them close to him.14 But Israel reached out his right hand and placed it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh's head, crossing his hands, although (C1)Manasseh was the firstborn.15 And he blessed Joseph, and said,

"(C1)The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked,
(C2)The God who has been my shepherd (F1)all my life to this day,

16 (C1)The angel who has redeemed me from all evil,
(C2)Bless the boys;
And may my name (F1)live on in them,
And the (F2)names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac;
And (C3)may they grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth."

17 When Joseph saw that his father (C1)placed his right hand on Ephraim's head, it displeased him; and he grasped his father's hand to move it from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head.18 And Joseph said to his father, "Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn. Place your right hand on his head."19 But his father refused and said, "I know, my son, I know; he also will become a people and he also will be great. However, his younger brother shall be greater than he, and (C1)his (F1)descendants shall become (F2)a multitude of nations."20 So (C1)he blessed them that day, saying,

"By you Israel will pronounce blessing, saying,
'May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh!'"
And so he put Ephraim before Manasseh.

21 Then Israel said to Joseph, "Behold, I am about to die, but (C1)God will be with you, and (C2)bring you back to the land of your fathers.22 "And I give you one (F1)portion more than your brothers, (C1)which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and my bow."

Psalms 38

Chapter 38

Prayer of a Suffering Penitent.

A Psalm of David, for a memorial.

1 LORD, (C1)do not rebuke me in Your wrath,
And do not punish me in Your burning anger.

2 For Your (C1)arrows have sunk deep into me,
And (C2)Your hand has pressed down on me.

3 There is (C1)no healthy part in my flesh (C2)because of Your indignation;
There is no health (C3)in my bones because of my sin.

4 For my (C1)guilty deeds have gone over my head;
Like a heavy burden they weigh too much for me.

5 My (F1)wounds grow foul and fester
Because of (C1)my foolishness.

6 I am bent over and (C1)greatly bowed down;
I (C2)go in mourning all day long.

7 For my (F1)sides are filled with (C1)burning,
And there is (C2)no healthy part in my flesh.

8 I feel (C1)faint and (F1)badly crushed;
I (F2)(C2)groan because of the (F3)agitation of my heart.

9 Lord, all (C1)my desire is (F1)before You;
And my (C2)sighing is not hidden from You.

10 My heart throbs, (C1)my strength fails me;
And the (C2)light of my eyes, even (F1)that (F2)has gone from me.

11 My (F1)(C1)loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague;
And my kinsmen (C2)stand far away.

12 Those who (C1)seek my life (C2)lay snares for me;
And those who (C3)seek to injure me have (F1)threatened destruction,
And they (C4)plot deception all day long.

13 But I, like a person who is deaf, do not hear;
And I am like a (C1)person who cannot speak, who does not open his mouth.

14 Yes, I am like a person who does not hear,
And in whose mouth are no arguments.

15 For (C1)I wait for You, LORD;
You (C2)will answer, Lord my God.

16 For I said, "May they not rejoice over me,
Who, when my foot slips, (C1)would exalt themselves over me."

17 For I am (C1)ready to fall,
And (C2)my (F1)sorrow is continually before me.

18 For I (C1)admit my guilt;
I am full of (C2)anxiety because of my sin.

19 But my (C1)enemies are vigorous and (F1)strong,
And those who wrongfully (C2)hate me are many.

20 And those who (C1)repay evil for good,
They (C2)become my enemies, because I follow what is good.

21 Do not abandon me, LORD;
My God, (C1)do not be far from me!

22 (C1)Hurry to help me,
Lord, (C2)my salvation!

Hebrews 3:1-4:13

Chapter 3

Jesus Our High Priest

1 Therefore, (C1)holy brothers and sisters, partakers of a (C2)heavenly calling, consider (C3)the Apostle and (C4)High Priest of our (C5)confession: Jesus;2 (F1)He was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as (C1)Moses also was in all His house.3 (C1)For He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house.4 For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.5 Now (C1)Moses was faithful in all (F1)God's house as (C2)a servant, (C3)for a testimony of those things (C4)which were to be spoken later;6 but Christ was faithful as (C1)a Son over His house—(C2)whose house we are, (C3)if we hold firmly to our (C4)confidence and the boast of our (F1)(C5)hope.

7 Therefore, just as (C1)the Holy Spirit says,

"(C2)TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE,

8 (C1)DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS AS (F1)WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME,
AS ON THE DAY OF TRIAL IN THE WILDERNESS,

9 (C1)WHERE YOUR FATHERS PUT ME TO THE TEST,
AND SAW MY WORKS FOR (C2)FORTY YEARS.

10 "(C1)THEREFORE I WAS ANGRY WITH THIS GENERATION,
AND SAID, 'THEY ALWAYS GO ASTRAY IN THEIR HEART,
AND THEY DID NOT KNOW MY WAYS';

11 (C1)AS I SWORE IN MY ANGER,
'THEY CERTAINLY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST.'"

The Danger of Unbelief

12 (C1)Take care, brothers and sisters, that there will not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart (F1)that falls away from (C2)the living God.13 But (C1)encourage one another every day, as long as it is still called "today," so that none of you will be hardened by the (C2)deceitfulness of sin.14 For we have become partakers of Christ (C1)if we keep the beginning of our (F1)(C2)commitment firm until the end,15 while it is said,

"(C1)TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE,
DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS, AS (F1)WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME."

16 For who (C1)provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, (C2)did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses?17 And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, (C1)whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness?18 And to whom did He swear (C1)that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were (C2)disobedient?19 And so we see that they were not able to enter because of (C1)unbelief.

Chapter 4

The Believer's Rest

1 Therefore, we must fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have (C1)come short of it.2 For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also did; but (C1)the word (F1)they heard did not benefit them, because (F2)they were not united with those who listened with faith.3 For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said,

"(C1)AS I SWORE IN MY ANGER,
THEY CERTAINLY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST,"
although His works were finished (C2)from the foundation of the world.

4 For He has said (C1)somewhere concerning the seventh day: "(C2)AND GOD (C3)RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY FROM ALL HIS WORKS";5 and again in this passage, "(C1)THEY CERTAINLY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST."6 Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who previously had good news preached to them failed to enter because of (C1)disobedience,7 He again sets a certain day, "Today," saying (F1)through David after so long a time just (C1)as has been said before,

"(C2)TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE,
DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS."

8 For (C1)if (F1)Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that.9 Consequently, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.10 For the one who has entered His rest has himself also (C1)rested from his works, as (C2)God did from His.11 Therefore let's make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same (C1)example of (C2)disobedience.12 For (C1)the word of God is (C2)living and (C3)active, and sharper than any two-edged (C4)sword, even penetrating as far as the division of (C5)soul and (C5)spirit, of both joints and marrow, and (C6)able to (F1)judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.13 And (C1)there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are (C2)open and laid bare to the eyes of Him to whom (F1)we must answer.<
