Exodus 5:1-6:27
Chapter 5
Israel's Labor Increased
1 And afterward Moses and Aaron came and said to Pharaoh, "(C1)This is what the LORD, the God of Israel says: '(C2)Let My people go so that they may celebrate a feast to Me in the wilderness.'"2 But Pharaoh said, "(C1)Who is the LORD that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and besides, (C2)I will not let Israel go."3 Then they said, "(C1)The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please, let us go a three days' journey into the wilderness so that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God, otherwise He will strike us with plague or with the sword."4 But the king of Egypt said to them, "Moses and Aaron, why do you let the people neglect their (F1)work? Get back to your (C1)labors!"5 Again Pharaoh said, "Look, (C1)the people of the land are now many, and you would have them cease from their labors!"6 So the same day Pharaoh commanded (C1)the taskmasters over the people and their (C2)foremen, saying,7 "You are no longer to give the people straw to make bricks as previously; have them go and gather straw for themselves.8 "But you shall impose on them the quota of bricks which they were making before; you are not to reduce any of it. Because they are (C1)lazy, for that reason they cry (F1)out, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.'9 "Let the labor be heavier on the men, and have them work at it so that they will pay no attention to false words."
10 So (C1)the taskmasters of the people and their foremen went out and spoke to the people, saying, "This is what Pharaoh says: 'I am not going to give you any straw.11 'You go, get straw for yourselves wherever you can find it; but none of your labor will be reduced.'"12 So the people scattered through all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.13 And the taskmasters pressed them, saying, "Complete your (F1)work quota, (F2)your daily amount, just as when (F3)you had straw."14 Moreover, (C1)the foremen of the sons of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, (C2)were beaten (F1)and asked, "Why have you not completed your required task of making bricks either yesterday or today, as before?"
15 Then the foremen of the sons of Israel came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, "Why do you deal this way with your servants?16 "There is no straw given to your servants, yet they keep saying to us, 'Make bricks!' And behold, your servants are being beaten; but it is the fault of your own people."17 But he said, "You are (C1)lazy, very lazy; for that reason you say, 'Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.'18 "So go now and work; for you will be given no straw, but you must deliver the quota of bricks."19 The foremen of the sons of Israel saw that they were in trouble, (F1)since they were told, "You must not reduce (F2)your daily amount of bricks."20 When they left Pharaoh's presence, they met Moses and Aaron as they were (F1)waiting for them.21 And (C1)they said to them, "(C2)May the LORD look upon you and judge you, because you have (C3)made (F1)us repulsive in Pharaoh's sight and in the sight of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us!"
22 Then Moses returned to the LORD and said, "(C1)Lord, why have You brought harm to this people? Why did You ever send me?23 "Ever since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done harm to this people, (C1)and You have not rescued Your people at all."
Chapter 6
God Promises Action
1 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for (F1)(C1)under compulsion he will let them go, and (F1)under compulsion he will drive them out of his land."
2 God spoke further to Moses and said to him, "I am (C1)the LORD;3 and I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as (F1)(C1)God Almighty, but by (C2)My name, (F2)LORD, I did not make Myself known to them.4 "I also established (C1)My covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the (F1)land in which they lived as strangers.5 "Furthermore I have (C1)heard the groaning of the sons of Israel, because the Egyptians are holding them in bondage, and I have remembered My covenant.6 "Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, '(C1)I am the LORD, and (C2)I will bring you out from under the labors of the Egyptians, and I will rescue you from their bondage. I will also (C3)redeem you with (C4)an outstretched arm, and with great judgments.7 'Then I will take you (F1)(C1)as My people, and (C2)I will be (F2)your God; and (C3)you shall know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the labors of the Egyptians.8 'I will bring you to the land which (C1)I (F1)swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and (C2)I will give it to you as a possession; (C3)I am the LORD.'"9 So Moses said this to the sons of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses on (C1)account of their (F1)despondency and cruel bondage.
10 Now the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,11 "(C1)Go, (F1)tell Pharaoh king of Egypt (F2)to let the sons of Israel go out of his land."12 But Moses spoke before the LORD, saying, "Behold, the sons of Israel have not listened to me; (C1)how then will Pharaoh listen to me, as I am (F1)(C2)unskilled in speech?"13 Nevertheless, the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron and gave them a command concerning the sons of Israel and Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt.
The Heads of Israel
14 These are the heads of their fathers' households. (C1)The sons of Reuben, Israel's firstborn: Hanoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi; these are the families of Reuben.15 And the (C1)sons of Simeon: (F1)Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman; these are the families of Simeon.16 And these are the names of (C1)the sons of Levi according to their generations: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari; and the (F1)length of Levi's life was 137 years.17 (C1)The sons of Gershon: (F1)Libni and Shimei, according to their families.18 And (C1)the sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel; and the (F1)length of Kohath's life was 133 years.19 And (C1)the sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their generations.20 Now (C1)Amram (F1)married his father's sister Jochebed, and she bore him Aaron and Moses; and the (F2)length of Amram's life was 137 years.21 And (C1)the sons of Izhar: Korah, Nepheg, and Zichri.22 And (C1)the sons of Uzziel: Mishael, (F1)Elzaphan, and Sithri.23 Aaron (F1)married Elisheba, the daughter of (C1)Amminadab, the sister of (C2)Nahshon, and she bore him (C3)Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.24 And the (C1)sons of Korah: Assir, Elkanah, and (F1)Abiasaph; these are the families of the Korahites.25 Now Aaron's son (C1)Eleazar (F1)married one of the daughters of Putiel, and she bore him (C2)Phinehas. These are the heads of the fathers' households of the Levites according to their families.26 It was the same Aaron and Moses to whom the LORD said, "(C1)Bring out the sons of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their (F1)(C2)multitudes."27 They were the ones (C1)who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt (F1)about bringing out the sons of Israel from Egypt; it was the same Moses and Aaron.<
Proverbs 1
Chapter 1
The Usefulness of Proverbs
1 The (C1)proverbs of Solomon (C2)the son of David, king of Israel:
2 To know (C1)wisdom and instruction,
To discern the sayings of (C2)understanding,
3 To (C1)receive instruction in wise behavior,
(C2)Righteousness, justice, and integrity;
4 To give (C1)prudence to the naive,
To the youth (C2)knowledge and discretion,
5 A wise person will hear and (C1)increase in learning,
And a (C2)person of understanding will acquire wise counsel,
6 To understand a proverb and a saying,
The words of the wise and their (C1)riddles.
7 (C1)The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge;
Fools despise wisdom and instruction.
The Enticement of Sinners
8 (C1)Listen, my son, to your father's instruction,
And (C2)do not ignore your mother's teaching;
9 For they are a (C1)graceful wreath for your head
And (C2)necklaces for your neck.
10 My son, if sinners (C1)entice you,
(C2)Do not consent.
11 If they say, "Come with us,
Let's (C1)lie in wait for blood,
Let's (C2)ambush the innocent without cause;
12 Let's (C1)swallow them alive like Sheol,
Even whole, like those who (C2)go down to the pit;
13 We will find all kinds of precious wealth,
We will fill our houses with plunder;
14 Throw in your lot (F1)with us;
We will all have one money bag,"
15 My son, (C1)do not walk on the way with them.
(C2)Keep your feet from their path,
16 For (C1)their feet run to evil,
And they are quick to shed blood.
17 Indeed, it is (F1)useless to spread the baited net
In the sight of any (F2)bird;
18 But they (C1)lie in wait for their own blood;
They ambush their own lives.
19 Such are the ways of everyone who (C1)makes unjust gain;
It takes away the life of its possessors.
Wisdom Warns
20 (C1)Wisdom shouts in the street,
She (F1)raises her voice in the public square;
21 At the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
At the entrance of the gates in the city she declares her sayings:
22 "How long, you (C1)naive ones, will you love simplistic thinking?
And how long will (C2)scoffers delight themselves in scoffing
And fools (C3)hate knowledge?
23 "Turn to my rebuke,
Behold, I will (C1)pour out my spirit on you;
I will make my words known to you.
24 "Because (C1)I called and you (C2)refused,
I (C3)stretched out my hand and no one paid attention;
25 And you (C1)neglected all my advice
And did not (C2)want my rebuke;
26 I will also (C1)laugh at your (C2)disaster;
I will mock when your (C3)dread comes,
27 When your dread comes like a storm
And your disaster comes like a (C1)whirlwind,
When distress and anguish come upon you.
28 "Then they will (C1)call on me, but I will not answer;
They will (C2)seek me diligently but will not find me,
29 Because they (C1)hated knowledge
And did not choose the fear of the LORD.
30 "They (C1)did not accept my advice,
They disdainfully rejected every rebuke from me.
31 "So they shall (C1)eat of the fruit of their own way,
And be (C2)filled with their own schemes.
32 "For the (C1)faithlessness of the naive will kill them,
And the complacency of fools will destroy them.
33 "But (C1)whoever listens to me will live securely
And will be at ease from the dread of evil."
Hebrews 8
Chapter 8
A Better Ministry
1 Now the main point in what has been said is this: we have such a (C1)high priest, who has taken His seat at (C2)the right hand of the throne of the (C2)Majesty in the heavens,2 a (C1)minister (F1)in the sanctuary and (F1)in the (C2)true (F2)tabernacle, which the Lord (C3)set up, not man.3 For every (C1)high priest is appointed (C2)to offer both gifts and sacrifices; so it is necessary that this high priest also have something to offer.4 Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest at all, since there are (F1)those who (C1)offer the gifts according to the Law;5 who serve (C1)a copy and (C2)shadow of the heavenly things, just as Moses (F1)was (C3)warned by God when he was about to erect the (F2)tabernacle; for, "(C4)SEE," He says, "THAT YOU MAKE all things BY THE PATTERN WHICH WAS SHOWN TO YOU ON THE MOUNTAIN."6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, to the extent that He is also the (C1)mediator of (C2)a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises.
A New Covenant
7 For (C1)if that first covenant had been free of fault, no (F1)circumstances would have been sought for a second.8 For in finding fault with (F1)the people, He says,"(C1)BEHOLD, DAYS ARE COMING, SAYS THE LORD,
(F2)WHEN I WILL BRING ABOUT (C2)A NEW COVENANT
WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AND THE HOUSE OF JUDAH,
9 (C1)NOT LIKE THE COVENANT WHICH I MADE WITH THEIR FATHERS
ON THE DAY I TOOK THEM BY THE HAND
TO BRING THEM OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT;
FOR THEY DID NOT CONTINUE IN MY COVENANT,
AND I DID NOT CARE ABOUT THEM, SAYS THE LORD.
10 "(C1)FOR THIS IS THE COVENANT WHICH I WILL MAKE WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL
AFTER THOSE DAYS, DECLARES THE LORD:
(F1)I WILL PUT MY LAWS INTO THEIR MINDS,
AND WRITE THEM (C2)ON THEIR HEARTS.
AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD,
AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.
11 "(C1)AND THEY WILL NOT TEACH, EACH ONE HIS FELLOW CITIZEN,
AND EACH ONE HIS BROTHER, SAYING, 'KNOW THE LORD,'
FOR (C2)THEY WILL ALL KNOW ME,
FROM (F1)THE LEAST TO THE GREATEST OF THEM.
12 "(C1)FOR I WILL BE MERCIFUL TOWARD THEIR WRONGDOINGS,
(C2)AND THEIR SINS I WILL NO LONGER REMEMBER."
