Exodus 18,19

Jethro, Moses' Father-in-law

1 Now (C1)Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard about everything that God had done for Moses and for Israel His people, how the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt.2 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took in Moses' wife (C1)Zipporah, after he had sent her away,3 and her (C1)two sons, (F1)one of whom was named Gershom, for Moses said, "I have been (C2)a stranger in a foreign land."4 And (F1)the other was named (F2)(C1)Eliezer, for he said, "(C2)The God of my father was my help, and saved me from the sword of Pharaoh."

5 Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses (F1)in the wilderness where he was camped, at (C1)the mountain of God.6 And he (F1)sent word to Moses: "I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her."7 Then Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and (C1)he bowed down and (C2)kissed him; and they (C3)asked each other about their welfare, and went into the tent.8 Moses told his father-in-law everything that the LORD had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians (C1)for Israel's sake, all the (C2)hardship that had confronted them on the journey, and how (C3)the LORD had rescued them.9 And Jethro rejoiced over all (C1)the goodness which the LORD had done for Israel, (F1)in rescuing (F2)them from the hand of the Egyptians.10 So Jethro said, "(C1)Blessed be the LORD who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh, and who rescued the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.11 "Now I know that (C1)the LORD is greater than all the gods; indeed, (F1)(C2)it was proven when they acted insolently against (F2)the people."12 (C1)Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat (F1)a meal with Moses' father-in-law before God.

Jethro Counsels Moses

13 And it came about the next day, that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood before Moses from the morning until the evening.14 Now when Moses' father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, "What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge and all the people stand before you from morning until evening?"15 Moses said to his father-in-law, "Because the people come to me (C1)to inquire of God.16 "When they have a (F1)(C1)dispute, it comes to me, and I judge between someone and his neighbor and make known the statutes of God and His laws."17 Moses' father-in-law then said to him, "The thing that you are doing is not good.18 "(C1)You will surely wear out, both yourself and (F1)these people who are with you, because the (F2)task is too heavy for you; (C2)you cannot do it alone.19 "Now listen to (F1)me: I will give you counsel, and God be with you. (F2)You be the people's representative before God, and you (C1)bring the (F3)disputes to God,20 (C1)then admonish them about the statutes and the laws, and make known to them (C2)the way in which they are to walk and the work they are to do.21 "Furthermore, you shall (F1)select out of all the people (C1)able men (C2)who fear God, men of truth, those who (C3)hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, (F2)of hundreds, (F2)of fifties, and (F2)of tens.22 "Let them judge the people at all times; and let it be (C1)that they will bring to you every major matter, but they will judge every minor matter themselves. So it will be easier for you, and (C2)they will carry the burden with you.23 "If you do this thing and God so commands you, then you will be able to (F1)endure, and all (F2)these people also will go to (F3)their places in peace."

24 So Moses listened (F1)to his father-in-law and did everything that he had said.25 Moses chose (C1)able men out of all Israel and made them heads over the people, leaders of thousands, (F1)of hundreds, (F1)of fifties, and (F1)of tens.26 Then they judged the people at all times; (C1)they would bring the difficult matter to Moses, but they would judge every minor matter themselves.27 Then Moses (F1)(C1)said goodbye to his father-in-law, and (F2)Jethro went his way to his own land.

Moses on Sinai

1 (C1)In the third month after the sons of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, (F1)on that very day they came into the wilderness of (C2)Sinai.2 When they set out from (C1)Rephidim, they came to the wilderness of Sinai and camped in the wilderness; and there Israel camped in front of (C2)the mountain.3 And Moses went up to God, and (C1)the LORD called to him from the mountain, saying, "This is what you shall say to the house of Jacob and tell the sons of Israel:4 '(C1)You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I carried you on (C2)eagles' wings, and brought you to Myself.5 'Now then, (C1)if you will indeed obey My voice and (C2)keep My covenant, then you shall be (C3)My (F1)own possession among all the peoples, for (C4)all the earth is Mine;6 and you shall be to Me (C1)a kingdom of priests and (C2)a holy nation.' These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel."

7 (C1)So Moses came and called the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which the LORD had commanded him.8 Then (C1)all the people answered together and said, "All that the LORD has spoken we will do!" And Moses brought back the words of the people to the LORD.9 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, I will come to you in (C1)a thick cloud, so that the (C2)people may hear when I speak with you and may also trust in you forever." Then Moses told the words of the people to the LORD.

10 The LORD also said to Moses, "Go to the people and (C1)consecrate them today and tomorrow, and have them (C2)wash their garments;11 and have them ready for the third day, for on (C1)the third day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.12 "But you shall set boundaries for the people all around, saying, '(F1)Beware that you do not go up on the mountain or touch the border of it; (C1)whoever touches the mountain shall certainly be put to death.13 'No hand shall touch him, but (C1)he shall certainly be stoned or (F1)shot through; whether animal or person, the violator shall not live.' When the ram's horn sounds a long blast, they shall come up to (C2)the mountain."14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and consecrated the people, and they washed their garments.15 He also said to the people, "Be ready for the third day; do not go near a woman."

16 (C1)So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were (F1)thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud over the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled.17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the (F1)foot of the mountain.

The LORD Visits Sinai

18 (C1)Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the LORD descended upon it (C2)in fire; and its smoke ascended like (C3)the smoke of a furnace, and (C4)the entire mountain (F1)quaked violently.19 When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and (C1)God answered him with (F1)thunder.20 Then (C1)the LORD came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain; and the LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.21 Then the LORD spoke to Moses: "Go down, (F1)warn the people, so that (C1)they do not break through to the LORD to stare, and many of them (F2)perish.22 "Also have the (C1)priests who approach the LORD consecrate themselves, or else the LORD will break out against them."23 And Moses said to the LORD, "The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, for You (F1)warned us, saying, '(C1)Set boundaries around the mountain and consecrate it.'"24 Then the LORD said to him, "(F1)Go down and come up again, (C1)you and Aaron with you; but do not let the (C2)priests and the people break through to come up to the LORD, or He will break out against them."25 So Moses went down to the people and told them.

Proverbs 8

Chapter 8

The Commendation of Wisdom

1 Does not (C1)wisdom call,
And understanding (F1)raise her voice?

2 On top of (C1)the heights beside the way,
Where the paths meet, she takes her stand;

3 Beside the (C1)gates, at the opening to the city,
At the entrance of the doors, she cries out:

4 "To you, people, I call,
And my voice is to (F1)mankind.

5 "You (C1)naive ones, understand prudence;
And, you (C2)fools, understand (F1)wisdom!

6 "Listen, for I will speak (C1)noble things;
And the opening of my lips will reveal (C2)right things.

7 "For my (C1)mouth will proclaim truth;
And wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

8 "All the words of my mouth are in righteousness;
There is nothing (C1)crooked or perverted in them.

9 "They are all (C1)straightforward to him who understands,
And right to those who (C2)find knowledge.

10 "Accept my (C1)instruction and not silver,
And knowledge rather than choice gold.

11 "For wisdom is (C1)better than (F1)jewels;
And (C2)all desirable things cannot compare with her.

12 "I, wisdom, (C1)dwell with prudence,
And I find (C2)knowledge and discretion.

13 "The (C1)fear of the LORD is to hate evil;
(C2)Pride, arrogance, (C3)the evil way,
And the (C4)perverted mouth, I hate.

14 "(C1)Advice is mine and (C2)sound wisdom;
I am understanding, (C3)power is mine.

15 "By me (C1)kings reign,
And rulers decree justice.

16 "By me princes rule, and nobles,
All who judge rightly.

17 "I (C1)love those who love me;
And (C2)those who diligently seek me will find me.

18 "(C1)Riches and honor are with me,
Enduring (C2)wealth and righteousness.

19 "My fruit is (C1)better than gold, even pure gold;
And my yield better than (C2)choice silver.

20 "I walk in the way of righteousness,
In the midst of the paths of justice,

21 To endow those who love me with wealth,
That I may (C1)fill their treasuries.

22 "The LORD (F1)created me (C1)at the beginning of His way,
Before His works (F2)of old.

23 "From eternity I was (F1)(C1)established,
From the beginning, (C2)from the earliest times of the earth.

24 "When there were no (C1)ocean depths, I was born,
When there were no springs abounding with water.

25 "(C1)Before the mountains were settled,
Before the hills, I was born;

26 While He had not yet made the earth and the (F1)fields,
Nor the first dust of the world.

27 "When He (C1)established the heavens, I was there;
When (C2)He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep,

28 When He made firm the skies above,
When the springs of the deep became (F1)fixed,

29 When (C1)He set a boundary for the sea
So that the water would not violate His (F1)command,
When He marked out (C2)the foundations of the earth;

30 Then (C1)I was beside Him, as a master workman;
And I was His delight daily,
(F1)Rejoicing always before Him,

31 (F1)Rejoicing in the world, His earth,
And having (C1)my delight in the sons of mankind.

32 "Now then, sons, (C1)listen to me,
For (C2)blessed are those who keep my ways.

33 "(C1)Listen to instruction and be wise,
And do not neglect it.

34 "(C1)Blessed is the person who listens to me,
Watching daily at my gates,
Waiting at my doorposts.

35 "For (C1)one who finds me finds life,
And (C2)obtains favor from the LORD.

36 "But one who (F1)sins against me (C1)injures himself;
All those who (C2)hate me (C3)love death."

Hebrews 13

Chapter 13

The Changeless Christ

1 Let (C1)love of the brothers and sisters continue.2 Do not neglect (C1)hospitality to strangers, for by this some have (C2)entertained angels without knowing it.3 (C1)Remember (C2)the prisoners, as though in prison with them, and those who are badly treated, since you yourselves also are in the body.4 (C1)Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; (C2)for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.5 Make sure that your character is (C1)free from the love of money, (C2)being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, "(C3)I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER ABANDON YOU,"6 so that we confidently say,

"(C1)THE LORD IS MY HELPER, I WILL NOT BE AFRAID.
WHAT WILL MAN DO TO ME?"

7 Remember (C1)those who led you, who spoke (C2)the word of God to you; and considering the (F1)result of their way of life, (C3)imitate their faith.8 (C1)Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, and forever.9 (C1)Do not be misled by varied and strange teachings; for it is good for the heart to (C2)be strengthened by grace, not by (C3)foods, (C4)through which those who (F1)were so occupied were not benefited.10 We have an altar (C1)from which those (C2)who serve the (F1)tabernacle have no right to eat.11 For (C1)the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the Holy Place by the high priest as an offering for sin are burned outside the camp.12 Therefore Jesus also suffered (C1)outside the gate, (C2)that He might sanctify the people (C3)through His own blood.13 So then, let us go out to Him outside the camp, (C1)bearing His reproach.14 For here (C1)we do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking (C2)the city which is to come.

God-pleasing Sacrifices

15 (C1)Through Him then, let's continually offer up a (C2)sacrifice of praise to God, that is, (C3)the fruit of lips praising His name.16 And do not neglect doing good and (C1)sharing, for (C2)with such sacrifices God is pleased.

17 (C1)Obey your leaders and submit to them—for (C2)they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account—so that they may do this with joy, not (F1)groaning; for this would be unhelpful for you.

18 (C1)Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a (C2)good conscience, desiring to conduct ourselves honorably in all things.19 And I urge you all the more to do this, (C1)so that I may be restored to you more quickly.

Benediction

20 Now may (C1)the God of peace, who (C2)brought up from the dead the (C3)great Shepherd of the sheep (F1)through (C4)the blood of the (C5)eternal covenant, that is, Jesus our Lord,21 (C1)equip you in every good thing to do His will, (C2)working in us that (C3)which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, (C4)to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

22 But (C1)I urge you, (C2)brothers and sisters, (F1)listen patiently to (F2)this (C2)word of exhortation, for (C3)I have written to you briefly.23 Know that (C1)our brother Timothy has been released, with whom, if he comes soon, I will see you.24 Greet (C1)all of your leaders and all the (F1)(C2)saints. Those from (C3)Italy greet you.

25 (C1)Grace be with you all.
