Numbers 9-10

Chapter 9

The Passover

1 Now the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in (C1)the first month of the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying,2 "Now the sons of Israel are to (F1)celebrate the Passover at (C1)its appointed time.3 "On the fourteenth day of this month, (F1)at twilight, you shall celebrate it at its appointed time; you shall celebrate it in accordance with all its statutes and all its ordinances."4 So Moses (F1)told the sons of Israel to celebrate the Passover.5 And (C1)they celebrated the Passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at twilight, in the wilderness of Sinai; (C2)in accordance with everything that the LORD had commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did.6 But there were some men who were (C1)unclean because of contact with a (F1)dead person, so that they could not celebrate Passover on that day; and (C2)they came before Moses and Aaron on that day.7 Those men said to him, "Though we are unclean because of a (F1)dead person, why are we kept from presenting the offering of the LORD at its appointed time among the sons of Israel?"8 Moses then said to them, "(F1)(C1)Wait, and I will listen to what the LORD will command concerning you."

9 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,10 "Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'If any one of you or of your generations becomes unclean because of a dead (F1)person, or is on a distant journey, he may, however, celebrate the Passover to the LORD.11 'In the second month on the (C1)fourteenth day at twilight, they shall celebrate it; they (C2)shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.12 'They (C1)shall not leave any of it until morning, (C2)nor break a bone of it; they shall celebrate it in accordance with the whole statute of the Passover.13 '(C1)But the person who is clean and is not on a journey, yet refrains from celebrating the Passover, that (F1)person shall then be cut off from his people, because he did not present the offering of the LORD at its appointed time. That person (C2)will bear the responsibility for his sin.14 'And (C1)if a stranger resides among you and (F1)celebrates the Passover to the LORD, according to the statute of the Passover and its ordinance, so he shall celebrate it; you shall have (F2)the (C2)same statute, both for the stranger and for the native of the land.'"

The Cloud on the Tabernacle

15 Now on (C1)the day that the tabernacle was erected, (C2)the cloud covered the tabernacle, the (C3)tent of the testimony, and (C4)in the evening it was like the appearance of fire over the tabernacle until morning.16 That is how it was continuously; (C1)the cloud would cover it by day, and the appearance of fire by night.17 (C1)Whenever the cloud was lifted from over the tent, afterward the sons of Israel would set out; and in the place where the cloud settled down, there the sons of Israel would camp.18 At the (F1)command of the LORD the sons of Israel would set out, and at the (F1)command of the LORD they would camp; (C1)as long as the cloud settled over the tabernacle, they remained camped.19 Even when the cloud lingered over the tabernacle for many days, (F1)the sons of Israel would comply with the LORD'S ordinance and not set out.20 If (F1)sometimes the cloud remained a few days over the tabernacle, (C1)in accordance with the (F2)command of the LORD they remained camped. Then in accordance with the (F2)command of the LORD they set out.21 If (F1)sometimes the cloud (F2)remained from evening until morning, when the cloud was lifted in the morning they would set out; or if it remained in the daytime and at night, whenever the cloud was lifted, they would set out.22 Whether it was two days, a month, or a year that the cloud lingered over the tabernacle, staying above it, the sons of Israel remained camped and did not set out; but (C1)when it was lifted, they did set out.23 (C1)At the (F1)command of the LORD they camped, and at the (F1)command of the LORD they set out; they did what the LORD required, in accordance with the (F1)command of the LORD through Moses.

Chapter 10

The Silver Trumpets

1 The LORD spoke further to Moses, saying,2 "Make yourself two trumpets of silver, you shall make them of hammered work; and you shall use them for (C1)summoning the congregation and breaking camp.3 "Now (C1)when both are blown, all the congregation shall meet you at the entrance of the tent of meeting.4 "But if only one is blown, then the (C1)leaders, the heads of the (F1)divisions of Israel, shall meet you.5 "And when you blow an alarm, the camps that are pitched (C1)on the east side shall set out.6 "Then when you sound an alarm the second time, the camps that are pitched on (C1)the south side shall set out; an alarm is to be sounded for them to break camp.7 "When convening the assembly, however, you shall blow the trumpets without (C1)sounding an alarm.8 "(C1)The sons of Aaron, moreover, the priests, shall blow the trumpets; and this shall be a permanent statute for you throughout your generations.9 "And when you go to war in your land against the enemy who (C1)attacks you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, so that you will be (C2)thought of by the LORD your God, and be saved from your enemies.10 "Also on the day of your joy and at your appointed (F1)feasts, and on the first days of your months, (C1)you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be as a reminder of you before your God. I am the LORD your God."

The Tribes Leave Sinai

11 Now in (C1)the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth of the month, the cloud was lifted from above the (F1)tabernacle of the testimony;12 and the sons of Israel set out on (C1)their journeys from the wilderness of Sinai. Then the cloud settled in the (C2)wilderness of Paran.13 (C1)So they moved on for the first time in accordance with the (F1)command of the LORD through Moses.14 The (F1)flag of the camp of the sons of Judah, by their armies, (C1)set out first, with Nahshon the son of Amminadab, over its army,15 and Nethanel the son of Zuar, over the tribal army of the sons of Issachar;16 and Eliab the son of Helon over the tribal army of the sons of Zebulun.

17 (C1)Then the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who were carrying the tabernacle, set out.18 Next (C1)the flag of the camp of Reuben, by their armies, set out with Elizur the son of Shedeur, over its army,19 and Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai over the tribal army of the sons of Simeon,20 and Eliasaph the son of Deuel was over the tribal army of the sons of Gad.

21 (C1)Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the holy objects; and (C2)the tabernacle was set up before their arrival.22 (C1)Next the flag of the camp of the sons of Ephraim, by their armies, set out, with Elishama the son of Ammihud over its army,23 and Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur over the tribal army of the sons of Manasseh;24 and Abidan the son of Gideoni over the tribal army of the sons of Benjamin.

25 (C1)Then the flag of the camp of the sons of Dan, by their armies, which formed the (C2)rear guard for all the camps, set out, with Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai over its army,26 and Pagiel the son of Ochran over the tribal army of the sons of Asher;27 and Ahira the son of Enan over the tribal army of the sons of Naphtali.28 (F1)This was the order of marching for the sons of Israel by their armies as they set out.

29 Then Moses said to (C1)Hobab the son of (C2)Reuel the Midianite, Moses' father-in-law, "We are setting out to the place of which the LORD said, '(C3)I will give it to you.' (C4)Come with us and we will do you good, for the LORD (C5)has (F1)promised good concerning Israel."30 But he said to him, "(C1)I will not come, but rather will go to my own land and relatives."31 Then he said, "Please do not leave us, since you know (F1)where we should camp in the wilderness, and you (C1)will be as eyes for us.32 "So it will be, if you go with us, that (F1)(C1)whatever good the LORD (F2)does for us, (C2)we will (F3)do for you."

33 (C1)So they moved on from the mountain of the LORD three days' journey, with (C2)the ark of the covenant of the LORD going on in front of them for the (F1)three days, to seek out (C3)a resting place for them.34 (C1)And the cloud of the LORD was over them by day when they set out from the camp.

35 Then it came about when the ark set out that Moses said,

"(C1)Rise up, LORD!
And may Your enemies be scattered,
And those (C2)who hate You flee from Your presence."

36 And when it came to rest, he said,

"(C1)Return, LORD,
To the myriad (C2)thousands of Israel."

Ecclesiastes 7

Chapter 7

Wisdom and Foolishness Contrasted

1 A (C1)good name is better than good (F1)oil,
And the (C2)day of one's death is better than the day of one's birth.

2 It is better to go to a house of mourning
Than to go to a house of feasting,
Because (F1)that is the (C1)end of every person,
And the living (F2)(C2)takes it to (F3)heart.

3 (C1)Sorrow is better than laughter,
For (C2)when a face is sad a heart may be happy.

4 The (F1)mind of the wise is in the house of mourning,
While the (F1)mind of fools is in the house of pleasure.

5 It is better to (C1)listen to the rebuke of a wise person
Than for one to listen to the song of fools.

6 For as the (F1)crackling of (C1)thorn bushes under a pot,
So is the (C2)laughter of the fool;
And this too is futility.

7 For (C1)oppression makes a wise person look foolish,
And a (C2)bribe (F1)corrupts the heart.

8 The (C1)end of a matter is better than its beginning;
(C2)Patience of spirit is better than arrogance of spirit.

9 Do not be (F1)(C1)eager in your spirit to be angry,
For anger resides in the (F2)heart of fools.

10 Do not say, "Why is it that the former days were better than these?"
For it is not from wisdom that you ask about this.

11 Wisdom along with an inheritance is good,
And an (C1)advantage to those who see the sun.

12 For (C1)wisdom is (F1)protection just as money is (F1)protection,
But the advantage of knowledge is that (C2)wisdom keeps its possessors alive.

13 Consider the (C1)work of God,
For who is (C2)able to straighten what He has bent?

14 (C1)On the day of prosperity be happy,
But (C2)on the day of adversity consider:
God has made the one as well as the other
So that a person will (C3)not discover anything that will come after him.

15 I have seen everything during my (F1)(C1)lifetime of futility; there is (C2)a righteous person who perishes in his righteousness, and there is (C3)a wicked person who prolongs his life in his wickedness.16 Do not be excessively (C1)righteous, and do not (C2)be overly wise. Why should you ruin yourself?17 Do not be excessively wicked, and do not be foolish. Why should you (C1)die (F1)before your time?18 It is good that you grasp one thing while not (F1)letting go of the other; for one who (C1)fears God comes out with (F2)both of them.

19 (C1)Wisdom strengthens a wise person more than ten rulers who are in a city.20 Indeed, (C1)there is not a righteous person on earth who always does good and does not ever sin.21 Also, do not (F1)take seriously all the words which are spoken, so that you do not hear your servant (C1)cursing you,22 for (F1)you know that even you have cursed others many times as well.

23 I tested all this with wisdom, and I said, "I will be wise," (C1)but wisdom was far from me.24 What has been is remote and (C1)very (F1)mysterious. (C2)Who can discover it?25 I (F1)(C1)directed my (F2)mind to know and to investigate, and to seek wisdom and an explanation, and to know the evil of foolishness and the foolishness of insanity.26 And I discovered as more (C1)bitter than death the woman whose heart is (C2)snares and nets, whose hands are chains. (C3)One who is pleasing to God will escape from her, but (C4)the sinner will be captured by her.

27 "Behold, I have discovered this," says the Preacher, "by adding one thing to another to find an explanation,28 which (F1)I am still seeking but have not found. I have found one man among a thousand, but I have not found a (C1)woman among all these.29 "Behold, I have found only this, that (C1)God made people upright, but they have sought out many schemes."

Matthew 19:1-15

Chapter 19

Concerning Divorce

1 (C1)When Jesus had finished these words, He left Galilee and (C2)came into the region of Judea beyond the Jordan;2 and (F1)large crowds followed Him, and (C1)He healed them there.

3 Some Pharisees came to (F1)Jesus, testing Him and (F2)asking, "(C1)Is it lawful for a man to (F3)divorce his wife for any reason at all?"4 And He answered and said, "Have you not read (C1)that He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE,5 and said, '(C1)FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND HIS MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND (C2)THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH'?6 "So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no person is to separate."7 They (*)said to Him, "(C1)Why, then, did Moses command to GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND HER AWAY?"8 He (*)said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to (F1)divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way.9 "And I say to you, (C1)whoever (F1)divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman (F2)commits adultery(F3)."

10 The disciples (*)said to Him, "If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry."11 But He said to them, "(C1)Not all men can accept this statement, but (C2)only those to whom it has been given.12 "For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother's womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by people; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who is able to accept this, let him accept it."

Jesus Blesses Little Children

13 (C1)Then some children were brought to Him so that He would lay His hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them.14 But Jesus said, "(F1)(C1)Leave the children alone, and do not (F2)forbid them to come to Me; for (C2)the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."15 After laying His hands on them, He departed from there.<
