Numbers 21

Chapter 21

Arad Conquered

1 When the Canaanite, the king of (C1)Arad, who lived in the (F1)Negev, heard that Israel was coming by the way of Atharim, he fought against Israel and took some of them captive.2 So (C1)Israel made a vow to the LORD and said, "If You will indeed hand over this people to me, then I will (F1)utterly destroy their cities."3 The LORD heard the voice of Israel and turned over the Canaanites; then they (F1)utterly destroyed them and their cities. And the place was named (F2)(C1)Hormah.

4 Then they set out from Mount Hor by the way of the (F1)Red Sea, to (C1)go around the land of Edom; and the (F2)people became impatient because of the journey.5 So the people spoke against God and Moses: "(C1)Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no (F1)food and no water, and (F2)(C2)we are disgusted with (F3)this miserable food."

The Bronze Serpent

6 (C1)Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people and (C2)they bit the people, so that (C3)many people of Israel died.7 (C1)So the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned, because we have spoken against the LORD and against you; (C2)intercede with the LORD, that He will remove the serpents from us." And Moses interceded for the people.8 Then the LORD said to Moses, "(F1)Make a (C1)fiery serpent, and put it on a flag pole; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, and looks at it, will live."9 So Moses made a (C1)bronze serpent and put it on the flag pole; and it came about, that if a serpent bit someone, and he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.

10 (C1)Now the sons of Israel moved out and camped in Oboth.11 Then they journeyed from Oboth and camped at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness which is opposite Moab, to the (F1)east.12 (C1)From there they set out and camped in (F1)Wadi Zered.13 From there they journeyed and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Amorites; (C1)for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.14 For that reason it is said in the Book of the Wars of the LORD,

"Waheb in Suphah,
And the (F1)wadis of the Arnon,

15 And the slope of the wadis
That extends to the site of (C1)Ar,
And leans to the border of Moab."

16 (C1)From there they continued to (F1)Beer, that is the well where the LORD said to Moses, "Assemble the people, that I may give them water."

17 (C1)Then Israel sang this song:

"Spring up, O well! Sing to it!

18 "The well, which the leaders dug,
Which the nobles of the people hollowed out,
With the scepter and with their staffs."
And from the wilderness they continued to Mattanah,

19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,20 and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the land of Moab, at the top of Pisgah, which overlooks the (F1)desert.

Two Victories

21 (C1)Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, saying,22 "(C1)Let me pass through your land. We will not turn off into field or vineyard; we will not drink water from wells. We will go by the king's road until we have passed through your border."23 (C1)But Sihon would not permit Israel to pass through his border. Instead, Sihon gathered all his people and went out against Israel in the wilderness, and came to (C2)Jahaz and fought against Israel.24 Then (C1)Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the sons of Ammon; for the (C2)border of the sons of Ammon was (F1)Jazer.25 Israel took all these cities, and (C1)Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon and in all her (F1)villages.26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken all his land out of his hand, as far as the Arnon.27 For that reason those who use proverbs say,

"Come to Heshbon! Let it be built!
So let the city of Sihon be established.

28 "(C1)For a fire spread from Heshbon,
A flame from the town of Sihon;
It devoured (C2)Ar of Moab,
The (F1)(C3)dominant (F2)heights of the Arnon.

29 "(C1)Woe to you, Moab!
You are destroyed, people of (C2)Chemosh!
(C3)He has given his sons as fugitives,
(C4)And his daughters into captivity,
To an Amorite king, Sihon.

30 "But we have shot them down with arrows,
Heshbon is destroyed as far as (C1)Dibon,
Then we have laid waste as far as Nophah,
Which reaches to Medeba."

31 So Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.32 Now Moses sent men to spy out (C1)Jazer, and they captured its villages and dispossessed the Amorites who were there.

33 (C1)Then they turned and went up by the way of Bashan, and Og the king of Bashan went out against them (F1)with all his people, for battle at (C2)Edrei.34 But the LORD said to Moses, "(C1)Do not fear him, for I have handed him over to you, and all his people and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon."35 So (C1)they (F1)killed him and his sons and all his people, until there was no survivor left; and they took possession of his land.

Song of Solomon 1:1-2:7

Chapter 1

The Young Shulammite Bride and Jerusalem's Daughters

1 The (F1)Song of (C1)Songs, which is Solomon's.

(FA)The Bride

2 "May he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth!
For your (C1)love is (F1)sweeter than wine.

3 "Your (C1)oils have a pleasing fragrance,
Your (C2)name is like (F1)purified oil;
Therefore the (F2)(C3)young women love you.

4 "Draw me after you and let's run together!
The (C1)king has brought me into his chambers."

The Chorus

"We will rejoice in you and be joyful;
We will praise your (C2)love more than wine.
Rightly do they love you."

The Bride

5 "I am black and (C1)beautiful,
You (C2)daughters of Jerusalem,
Like the (C3)tents of (C4)Kedar,
Like the curtains of Solomon.

6 "Do not stare at me because I am (F1)dark,
For the sun has tanned me.
My (C1)mother's sons were angry with me;
They made me (C2)caretaker of the vineyards,
But I have not taken care of my own vineyard.

7 "Tell me, you (C1)whom my soul loves,
Where do you (C2)pasture your flock,
Where do you have it (C3)lie down at noon?
For why should I be like one who (F1)veils herself
Beside the flocks of your (C4)companions?"

Solomon, the Lover, Speaks

8 "If you yourself do not know,
(C1)Most beautiful among women,
Go out on the trail of the flock,
And pasture your young goats
By the tents of the shepherds.

9 "(F1)To me, (C1)my darling, you are like
My (C2)mare among the chariots of Pharaoh.

10 "Your (C1)cheeks are delightful with jewelry,
Your neck with strings of (C2)beads."

The Chorus

11 "We will make for you jewelry of gold
With beads of silver."

The Bride

12 "While the king was at his table,
My (F1)(C1)perfume gave forth its fragrance.

13 "My beloved is to me a pouch of (C1)myrrh
Which lies all night between my breasts.

14 "My beloved is to me a cluster of (C1)henna blossoms
In the vineyards of (C2)Engedi."

The Groom

15 "(F1)(C1)How beautiful you are, my darling,
(F1)How beautiful you are!
Your (C2)eyes are like doves."

The Bride

16 "(F1)How handsome you are, (C1)my beloved,
And so delightful!
Indeed, our bed is luxuriant!

17 "The beams of our house are (C1)cedars,
Our rafters, (C2)junipers.

Chapter 2

The Bride's Admiration

1 "I am the (F1)(C1)rose of (C2)Sharon,
The (C3)lily of the valleys."

The Groom

2 "Like a lily among the thorns,
So is (C1)my darling among the (F1)young women."

The Bride

3 "Like an (C1)apple tree among the trees of the forest,
So is my beloved among the (F1)young men.
In his shade I took great delight and sat down,
And his (C2)fruit was sweet to my (F2)taste.

4 "He has (C1)brought me to his (F1)banquet hall,
And his (C2)banner over me is love.

5 "Refresh me with (C1)raisin cakes,
Sustain me with (C2)apples,
Because (C3)I am lovesick.

6 "(C1)His left hand is under my head,
And (C1)his right hand (C2)embraces me."

The Groom

7 "(C1)Swear to me, you (C2)daughters of Jerusalem,
By the (C3)gazelles or by the (C4)does of the field,
(C1)That you will not disturb or awaken my love
Until she pleases."

Matthew 22:1-22

Chapter 22

Parable of the Marriage Feast

1 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying,2 "(C1)The kingdom of heaven (F1)is like (F2)a king who (F3)held a (C2)wedding feast for his son.3 "And he (C1)sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, and they were unwilling to come.4 "Again he (C1)sent other slaves, saying, 'Tell those who have been invited, "Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fattened cattle are all butchered and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast!"'5 "But they paid no attention and went their separate ways, one to his own (F1)farm, another to his business,6 and the rest seized his slaves and treated them abusively, and then killed them.7 "Now the king was angry, and he sent his armies and destroyed those murderers and set their city on fire.8 "Then he (*)said to his slaves, 'The wedding feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.9 'So go to (C1)the main roads, and invite whomever you find there to the wedding feast.'10 "Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good; and the wedding hall was filled with (F1)dinner guests.

11 "But when the king came in to look over the (F1)dinner guests, he saw (C1)a man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes,12 and he (*)said to him, '(C1)Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?' And the man was speechless.13 "Then the king said to the servants, 'Tie his hands and feet, and throw him into (C1)the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth in that place.'14 "For many are (F1)(C1)called, but few are (C1)chosen."

Poll-tax to Caesar

15 (C1)Then the Pharisees went and (F1)plotted together how they might trap Him (F2)in what He said.16 And they (*)sent their disciples to Him, along with the (C1)Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that You are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and (F1)do not care what anyone thinks; for You (F2)are not partial to anyone.17 "Tell us then, what do You think? Is it (F1)permissible to pay a (F2)(C1)poll-tax to (C2)Caesar, or not?"18 But Jesus perceived their (F1)malice, and said, "Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites?19 "Show Me the (C1)coin used for the poll-tax." And they brought Him a (F1)denarius.20 And He (*)said to them, "Whose image and inscription is this?"21 They (*)said to Him, "Caesar's." Then He (*)said to them, "(C1)Then pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and to God the things that are God's."22 And hearing this, they were amazed; and (C1)they left Him and went away.<
