God's Gracious Dealings
1 "All the commandments that I am commanding you today you shall be careful to do, so that you (C1)may live and increase, and go in and take possession of the land which the LORD swore to give to your forefathers.2 "(C1)And you shall remember all the way which the LORD your God has (C2)led you in the wilderness these forty years, in order to humble you, (C3)putting you to the test, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.3 "And He humbled you and let you go hungry, and fed you with the manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, in order to make you (F1)understand that (C1)man shall not live on bread alone, but man shall live on everything that comes out of the mouth of the LORD.4 "(C1)Your clothing did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years.5 "(C1)So you are to know in your heart that the LORD your God was disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son.6 "Therefore, you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to (F1)fear Him.7 "For (C1)the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of streams of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in valleys and hills;8 a land of wheat and barley, of vines, fig trees, and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey;9 a land where you will eat food without shortage, in which you will not lack anything; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper.10 "When (C1)you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you.
11 "Be careful that you do not (C1)forget the LORD your God by failing to keep His commandments, His ordinances, and His statutes which I am commanding you today;12 otherwise, (C1)when you eat and are satisfied, and you build good houses and live in them,13 and when your herds and your flocks increase, and your silver and gold increase, and everything that you have increases,14 then your heart will (F1)become proud and you will (C1)forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of (F2)slavery;15 He who led you through (C1)the great and terrible wilderness, with its (C2)fiery serpents and scorpions, and its thirsty ground where there was no water; He who (C3)brought water for you out of the rock of flint.16 "In the wilderness it was He who fed you manna (C1)which your fathers did not know, in order to humble you and in order to (C2)put you to the test, to do good for you (F1)in the end.17 "Otherwise, (C1)you may say in your heart, 'My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.'18 "But you are to remember the LORD your God, for (C1)it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, in order to confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.19 "And it shall come about, if you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and serve and worship them, (C1)I testify against you today that you will certainly perish.20 "Like the nations that the LORD eliminates from you, so (C1)you shall perish, because you would not listen to the voice of the LORD your God.
Israel Provoked God
1 "Hear, Israel! You are crossing the Jordan today, to go in to dispossess (C1)nations greater and mightier than you, cities that are great and (C2)fortified to heaven,2 a people who are great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, '(C1)Who can stand against the sons of Anak?'3 "So be aware today that (C1)it is the LORD your God who is crossing over ahead of you as (C2)a consuming fire. He will destroy them and He will subdue them before you, so that (C3)you may drive them out and eliminate them quickly, just as the LORD has spoken to you.
4 "(C1)Do not say in your heart when the LORD your God has driven them away from (F1)you, 'Because of my righteousness the LORD has brought me in to take possession of this land.' Rather, it is (C2)because of the (F2)wickedness of these nations that the LORD is dispossessing them before you.5 "It is (C1)not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you are going in to take possession of their land, (F1)but it is because of the (F2)wickedness of these nations that the LORD your God is driving them out from before you, and in order to confirm (C2)the (F3)oath which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
6 "Know, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are (C1)a (F1)stubborn people.7 "Remember, do not forget how you provoked the LORD your God to anger in the wilderness; (C1)from the day that you left the land of Egypt until you arrived at this place, you have been rebellious against the LORD.8 "Even (C1)at Horeb you provoked the LORD to anger, and the LORD was so angry with you that He would have destroyed you.9 "When I went up to the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I remained on the mountain for forty days and nights; (C1)I neither ate bread nor drank water.10 "The LORD gave me the two tablets of stone (C1)written by the finger of God; and on them were all the words which the LORD had spoken with you at the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly.11 "It came about (C1)at the end of forty days and nights that the LORD gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant.12 "(C1)Then the LORD said to me, 'Arise, go down from here quickly, because your people, whom you brought out of Egypt, have behaved corruptly. They have (C2)quickly turned aside from the way that I commanded them; they have made a cast metal image for themselves.'13 "The (C1)LORD also said to (F1)me, 'I have seen this people, and indeed, it is a (F2)(C2)stubborn people.14 '(C1)Leave Me alone, that I may destroy them and (C2)wipe out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.'
15 "(C1)So I turned and came down from the mountain while the mountain was burning with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands.16 "And I saw that you had indeed sinned against the LORD your God. You had made for yourselves a cast metal image of a calf; you had quickly turned aside from the way that the LORD had commanded you.17 "So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them from my two hands, and smashed them to pieces before your eyes!18 "(C1)Then I fell down before the LORD (C2)like the first time, for forty days and nights; (C3)I neither ate bread nor drank water, (C4)because of all your sin which you had committed by doing what was evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him to anger.19 "For (C1)I was afraid of the anger and the rage with which the LORD was angry with you so as to destroy you; (C2)but the LORD listened to me that time as well.20 "The LORD was also angry enough with Aaron to destroy him; so I also prayed for Aaron at the same time.21 "(C1)And I took your (F1)sinful thing which you had made, the calf, and burned it in the fire and crushed it, grinding it thoroughly until it was as fine as dust; and I threw its dust into the stream that came down from the mountain.
22 "Then at (C1)Taberah, at (C2)Massah, and at (C3)Kibroth-hattaavah you kept provoking the LORD to anger.23 "And when the LORD sent you from (C1)Kadesh-barnea, saying, '(C2)Go up and take possession of the land which I have given you,' you rebelled against the (F1)command of the LORD your God; (C3)you neither trusted Him nor listened to His voice.24 "(C1)You have been rebellious toward the LORD since the day I knew you.
25 "(C1)So I fell down before the LORD for the forty days and nights, which I (F1)did because the LORD said He would destroy you.26 "(C1)And I prayed to the LORD and said, 'Lord GOD, do not destroy Your people, Your inheritance, whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand!27 'Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not turn Your attention to the stubbornness of this people, or to their wickedness, or their sin.28 'Otherwise, the people of the land from which You brought us will say, "(C1)Since the LORD was not able to bring them into the land which He had (F1)promised them, and since He hated them, He has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness!"29 'Yet they are Your people, and (C1)Your inheritance, whom You brought out by Your (C2)great power and Your outstretched arm.'
The Tablets Rewritten
1 "At that time the LORD said to me, '(C1)Cut out for yourself two tablets of stone like the first two, and come up to Me on the mountain, and (C2)make an (F1)ark of wood for yourself.2 'Then (C1)I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets which you smashed to pieces, and (C2)you shall put them in the ark.'3 "So (C1)I made an ark of acacia wood and (C2)cut out two tablets of stone like the first two, and I went up on the mountain with the two tablets in my hand.4 "Then He wrote on the tablets, like the first writing, (C1)the Ten (F1)Commandments (C2)which the LORD had spoken to you on the mountain from the midst of the fire (C3)on the day of the assembly; and the LORD gave them to me.5 "Then I turned and (C1)came down from the mountain, and I (C2)put the tablets in the ark which I had made; (C3)and they are there, just as the LORD commanded me."
6 (Now the sons of Israel set out from (F1)Beeroth (C1)Bene-jaakan to Moserah. (C2)There Aaron died and there he was buried, and his son Eleazar served as priest in his place.7 (C1)From there they set out to Gudgodah, and from Gudgodah to Jotbathah, a land of streams of water.8 (C1)At that time the LORD singled out the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD (C2)to serve Him and to bless in His name, until this day.9 (C1)Therefore, Levi does not have a portion or inheritance with his brothers; the LORD is his inheritance, just as the LORD your God spoke to him.)
10 "(C1)I, moreover, stayed on the mountain for forty days and forty nights like the first time, and the LORD listened to me that time also; the LORD was not willing to destroy you.11 "Then the LORD said to me, 'Arise, proceed on your journey ahead of the people, so that they may go in and take possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.'
12 "(C1)And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to (F1)fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and (C2)love Him, and to serve the LORD your God with (C3)all your heart and with all your soul,13 and to keep the LORD'S commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today for your good?14 "Behold, (C1)to the LORD your God belong heaven and the (F1)highest heavens, (C2)the earth and all that is in it.15 "(C1)Yet the LORD set His affection on your fathers, to love them, and He chose their (F1)descendants after them, you over all the other peoples, as it is this day.16 "(C1)So circumcise (F1)your heart, and do not (C2)stiffen your neck any longer.17 "(C1)For the LORD your God is the God of gods and the (C2)Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, (C3)who does not show partiality, nor (C4)take a bribe.18 "He executes justice for (C1)the orphan and the widow, and shows His love for the stranger by giving him food and clothing.19 "(C1)So show your love for the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.20 "You shall fear the LORD your God; you shall serve Him, and (C1)cling to Him, and (C2)you shall swear by His name.21 "He is (C1)your glory and He is your God, who has done these great and awesome things for you which your eyes have seen.22 "(C1)Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons in all, (C2)and now the LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven.
Luke 4:1-30
Chapter 4
The Temptation of Jesus
1 (C1)Now Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, (C2)returned from the Jordan and was led around (F1)by the Spirit in the wilderness2 for (C1)forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He was hungry.3 And the devil said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread."4 And Jesus answered him, "It is written: '(C1)MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE.'"
5 (C1)And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of (F1)(C2)the world in a moment of time.6 And the devil said to Him, "I will give You all this domain and (F1)its glory, (C1)for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I want.7 "Therefore if You (F1)worship before me, it shall all be Yours."8 Jesus replied to him, "It is written: '(C1)YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'"
9 (C1)And he brought Him into Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here;10 for it is written: '(C1)HE WILL GIVE HIS ANGELS ORDERS CONCERNING YOU, TO PROTECT YOU,'
'(C1)ON THEIR HANDS THEY WILL LIFT YOU UP,
SO THAT YOU DO NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'"
13 And so when the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.
Jesus' Public Ministry
14 And (C1)Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and (C2)news about Him spread through all the surrounding region.15 And He began (C1)teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.
16 And He came to (C1)Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, (C2)He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and (C3)stood up to read.17 And the scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Him. And He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:
18 "(C1)THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME,
BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO BRING GOOD NEWS TO THE POOR.
HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO CAPTIVES,
AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND,
TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED,
19 (C1)TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD."
20 And He (C1)rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and (C2)sat down; and the eyes of all the people in the synagogue were intently directed at Him.21 Now He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your (F1)hearing."22 And all the people were (F1)speaking well of Him, and admiring the (F2)gracious words which were coming from His (F3)lips; and yet they were saying, "(C1)Is this not Joseph's son?"23 And He said to them, "No doubt you will (F1)quote this proverb to Me: 'Physician, heal yourself!
