Numbers 25-27

Chapter 25

The Sin of Peor

1 While Israel remained at (C1)Shittim, the people began (C2)to commit infidelity with the daughters of Moab.2 For (C1)they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.3 So (C1)Israel (F1)became followers of (F2)Baal of Peor, and the LORD was angry with Israel.4 And the LORD said to Moses, "Take all the leaders of the people and (F1)execute them (F2)in broad daylight before the LORD, (C1)so that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel."5 So Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Each of you (C1)kill his men who have (F1)become followers of (F2)Baal of Peor."

6 Then behold, one of the sons of Israel came and brought to his relatives a (C1)Midianite woman, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, (C2)while they were weeping at the entrance of the tent of meeting.7 (C1)When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand,8 and he went after the man of Israel into the inner room of the tent and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman, through the abdomen. (C1)So the plague on the sons of Israel was brought to a halt.9 (C1)But those who died from the plague were twenty-four thousand in number.

The Zeal of Phinehas

10 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,11 "(C1)Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has averted My wrath from the sons of Israel in that he was (F1)jealous with My (F2)jealousy among them, so that I did not destroy the sons of Israel (C2)in My (F2)jealousy.12 "Therefore say, '(C1)Behold, I am giving him My (C2)covenant of peace;13 and it shall be for him and for his (F1)descendants after him, a covenant of a (C1)permanent priesthood, because he was (F2)jealous for his God and (C2)made atonement for the sons of Israel.'"

14 Now the name of the (F1)dead man of Israel who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri the son of Salu, a leader of a father's household among the Simeonites.15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was killed was (C1)Cozbi the daughter of (C2)Zur, (F1)who was head of the people of a father's household in Midian.

16 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,17 "(C1)Be hostile to the Midianites and attack them;18 for they have been hostile to you with their tricks, with which they have deceived you in the matter of Peor and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the leader of Midian, their sister who was killed on the day of the plague because of Peor."

Chapter 26

Census of a New Generation

1 (F1)Then it came about after the (C1)plague, (F2)that the LORD spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying,2 "(C1)Take a (F1)census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel from twenty years old and upward, by their fathers' households, whoever is able to go to war in Israel."3 So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them (C1)in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying,

4 "Take a census of the people from twenty years old and upward, as the LORD has commanded Moses." Now the sons of Israel who came out of the land of Egypt were as follows:

5 Reuben, Israel's firstborn, the sons of Reuben: of Hanoch, the family of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the family of the Palluites;6 of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the family of the Carmites.7 These are the families of the Reubenites, and those who were counted of them were (C1)43,730.8 The son of Pallu: Eliab.9 The sons of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the Dathan and Abiram who were (C1)called by the congregation, who fought against Moses and against Aaron in the group of Korah, when they fought against the LORD,10 and (C1)the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up along with Korah, when that group died, (C2)when the fire devoured 250 men, so that they became a warning sign.11 (C1)The sons of Korah, however, did not die.

12 The sons of Simeon by their families: of (F1)Nemuel, the family of the Nemuelites; of Jamin, the family of the Jaminites; of (F2)Jachin, the family of the Jachinites;13 of (F1)Zerah, the family of the Zerahites; of Shaul, the family of the Shaulites.14 These are the families of the Simeonites, (C1)22,200 in number.

15 The sons of Gad by their families: of (F1)Zephon, the family of the Zephonites; of Haggi, the family of the Haggites; of Shuni, the family of the Shunites;16 of (F1)Ozni, the family of the Oznites; of Eri, the family of the Erites;17 of (F1)Arod, the family of the Arodites; of Areli, the family of the Arelites.18 These are the families of the sons of Gad according to those who were numbered of them, (C1)40,500.

19 The (C1)sons of Judah were Er and Onan, but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.20 The (C1)sons of Judah by their families were: of Shelah, the family of the Shelanites; of Perez, the family of the Perezites; of Zerah, the family of the Zerahites.21 The sons of Perez were: of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Hamul, the family of the Hamulites.22 These are the families of Judah by those who were numbered of them, (C1)76,500.

23 The (C1)sons of Issachar by their families: of Tola, the family of the Tolaites; of (F1)Puvah, the family of the Punites;24 of (F1)Jashub, the family of the Jashubites; of Shimron, the family of the Shimronites.25 These are the families of Issachar by those who were numbered of them, (C1)64,300.

26 The (C1)sons of Zebulun by their families: of Sered, the family of the Seredites; of Elon, the family of the Elonites; of Jahleel, the family of the Jahleelites.27 These are the families of the Zebulunites by those who were numbered of them, (C1)60,500.

28 The (C1)sons of Joseph by their families: Manasseh and Ephraim.29 The sons of Manasseh: of Machir, the family of the Machirites; and (C1)Machir fathered Gilead: of Gilead, the family of the Gileadites.30 These are the sons of Gilead: of (F1)Iezer, the family of the (C1)Iezerites; of Helek, the family of the Helekites;31 and of Asriel, the family of the Asrielites; and of Shechem, the family of the Shechemites;32 and of Shemida, the family of the Shemidaites; and of Hepher, the family of the Hepherites.33 Now Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, only daughters; and (C1)the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.34 These are the families of Manasseh; and those who were numbered of them were (C1)52,700.

35 These are the sons of Ephraim by their families: of Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthelahites; of (F1)Becher, the family of the Becherites; of Tahan, the family of the Tahanites.36 These are the sons of Shuthelah: of Eran, the family of the Eranites.37 These are the families of the sons of Ephraim by those who were numbered of them, (C1)32,500. These are the sons of Joseph by their families.

38 The sons of Benjamin by their families: of Bela, the family of the Belaites; of Ashbel, the family of the Ashbelites; of (F1)Ahiram, the family of the Ahiramites;39 of (F1)Shephupham, the family of the Shuphamites; of (F2)Hupham, the family of the Huphamites.40 The sons of Bela were (F1)Ard and Naaman: of Ard, the family of the Ardites; of Naaman, the family of the Naamites.41 These are the sons of Benjamin by their families; and those who were numbered of them were (C1)45,600.

42 These are the sons of Dan by their families: of (F1)Shuham, the family of the Shuhamites. These are the families of Dan by their families.43 All the families of the Shuhamites, by those who were numbered of them, were (C1)64,400.

44 The (C1)sons of Asher by their families: of Imnah, the family of the Imnites; of Ishvi, the family of the Ishvites; of Beriah, the family of the Beriites.45 Of the sons of Beriah: of Heber, the family of the Heberites; of Malchiel, the family of the Malchielites.46 And the name of the daughter of Asher was Serah.47 These are the families of the sons of Asher by those who were numbered of them, (C1)53,400.

48 The (C1)sons of Naphtali by their families: of Jahzeel, the family of the Jahzeelites; of Guni, the family of the Gunites;49 of Jezer, the family of the Jezerites; of (C1)Shillem, the family of the Shillemites.50 These are the families of Naphtali by their families; and those who were numbered of them were (C1)45,400.

51 These are the ones who were numbered of the sons of Israel, (C1)601,730.

52 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,53 "(F1)Among these the land shall be divided as an inheritance according to the number of names.54 "(C1)To a larger group you shall increase their inheritance, and to a smaller group you shall decrease their inheritance; each shall be given their inheritance corresponding to the total of those who were numbered of them.55 "But the land shall be (C1)divided by lot. They shall receive their inheritance according to the names of the tribes of their fathers.56 "Corresponding to the selection by lot, their inheritance shall be divided between the larger and the smaller groups."

57 (C1)These are those who were numbered of the Levites according to their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites; of Merari, the family of the Merarites.58 These are the families of Levi: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, and the family of the Korahites. (C1)Kohath fathered Amram.59 And the name of Amram's wife (C1)was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses, and their sister Miriam.60 (C1)And to Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.61 (C1)But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered (F1)strange fire before the LORD.62 Those who were numbered of them were (C1)twenty-three thousand, every male from a month old and upward, for (C2)they were not numbered among the sons of Israel (C3)since no inheritance was given to them among the sons of Israel.

63 These are the ones who were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.64 (C1)But among these there was not a man of those who were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.65 For the LORD had said (F1)of them, "(C1)They shall certainly die in the wilderness." And not a man was left of them, (C2)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

Chapter 27

A Law of Inheritance

1 Then (C1)the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph, came forward; and these are (C2)the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.2 They stood before Moses, before Eleazar the priest, before the leaders, and all the congregation at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying,3 "Our father (C1)died in the wilderness, yet he was not among the group of those who gathered together against the LORD, in the group of Korah; but he died in his own sin, and (C2)he had no sons.4 "Why should the name of our father be withdrawn from among his family simply because he had no son? Give us property among our father's brothers."5 (C1)So Moses brought their case before the LORD.

6 Then the LORD said to (F1)Moses,7 "(C1)The daughters of Zelophehad are right about their statements. You shall certainly give them hereditary property among their father's brothers, and you shall transfer the inheritance of their father to them.8 "Further, you shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter.9 'And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers.10 'If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers.11 'And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his nearest relative in his own family, and he shall take possession of it; and it shall be a (C1)statutory ordinance to the sons of Israel, just as the LORD has commanded Moses.'"

12 (C1)Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up to this (C2)mountain of Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the sons of Israel.13 "When you have seen it, you too (C1)will be gathered to your people, (C2)just as Aaron your brother (F1)was;14 for in the wilderness of Zin, during the strife of the congregation, (C1)you rebelled against My (F1)command to treat Me as holy before their eyes at the water." (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)

Joshua to Succeed Moses

15 Then Moses spoke to the LORD, saying,16 "(C1)May the LORD, the God of the spirits of (F1)humanity, appoint a man over the congregation,17 who (C1)will go out (F1)and come in before them, and lead them out and (F2)bring them in, so that the congregation of the LORD will not be (C2)like sheep that have no shepherd."18 So the LORD said to Moses, "(F1)Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man (C1)in whom is the Spirit, and (C2)lay your hand on him;19 and have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and (C1)commission him in their sight.20 "And you shall put some of your (F1)authority on him, so that all the congregation of the sons of Israel will obey him.21 "Moreover, he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him (C1)by the judgment of the Urim before the LORD. At his (F1)command they shall go out, and at his (F1)command they shall come in, both he and all the sons of Israel with him, all the congregation."22 Then Moses did just as the LORD commanded him; he took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation.23 Then he laid his hands on him and (C1)commissioned him, just as the LORD had spoken (F1)through Moses.

Song of Solomon 6:4-8:4

Chapter 6

4 "(C1)You are as beautiful as (C2)Tirzah, my darling,
As (C3)lovely as (C4)Jerusalem,
As (C5)awesome as an army with banners.

5 "Turn your eyes away from me,
For they have confused me;
(C1)Your hair is like a flock of goats
That have descended from Gilead.

6 "(C1)Your teeth are like a flock of ewes
That have come up from their watering place,
All of which bear twins,
And not one among them has lost her young.

7 "(C1)Your temples are like a slice of a pomegranate
Behind your veil.

8 "There are sixty (C1)queens and eighty concubines,
And (F1)(C2)young women without number;

9 But (C1)my dove, my perfect one, is (F1)unique:
She is her mother's (F1)only daughter;
She is the pure child of the one who gave birth to her.
The (F2)(C2)young women saw her and called her (F3)blessed,
The (C3)queens and the concubines also, and they praised her, saying,

10 'Who is this who looks down like the dawn,
As beautiful as the full (C1)moon,
As pure (C2)as the sun,
As (C3)awesome as an army with banners?'

11 "I went down to the orchard of nut trees
To see the plants of the valley,
To see whether (C1)the vine had grown
Or the (C2)pomegranates had bloomed.

12 "(F1)Before I was aware, my soul set me
Over the chariots of (F2)my noble people."

The Chorus

13 "(F1)Come back, come back, O Shulammite;
Come back, come back, so that we may look at you!"

The Groom

"Why should you look at the Shulammite,
As at the (C1)dance of (F2)(C2)the two armies?

Chapter 7

Admiration by the Groom

1 "(F1)How beautiful are your feet in sandals,
(F2)(C1)Prince's daughter!
The curves of your hips are like jewels,
The work of the hands of an artist.

2 "Your navel is like a round goblet
That never lacks mixed wine;
Your belly is like a heap of wheat,
(F1)Surrounded with lilies.

3 "Your (C1)two breasts are like two fawns,
Twins of a gazelle.

4 "Your (C1)neck is like a tower of ivory,
Your eyes like the pools in (C2)Heshbon
By the gate of Bath-rabbim;
Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon,
Which looks toward Damascus.

5 "Your head (F1)crowns you like (C1)Carmel,
And the flowing hair of your head is like purple threads;
The king is captivated by your tresses.

6 "How (C1)beautiful and how delightful you are,
(F1)My love, with all your delights!

7 "(F1)Your stature is like a palm tree,
And your breasts are like its clusters.

8 "I said, 'I will climb the palm tree,
I will grasp its fruit stalks.'
Oh, may your breasts be like clusters of the vine,
And the fragrance of your (F1)breath like (C1)apples,

9 And your (F1)(C1)mouth like the best wine!"

The Bride

"It (C2)goes down smoothly for my beloved,
Flowing gently through the lips of those who are asleep.

The Union of Love

10 "(C1)I am my beloved's,
And his (C2)desire is for me.

11 "Come, my beloved, let's go out to the (F1)country,
Let's spend the night in the villages.

12 "Let's rise early and go to the vineyards;
Let's (C1)see whether the vine has grown
And its buds have opened,
And whether the pomegranates have bloomed.
There I will give you my love.

13 "The (C1)mandrakes have given forth fragrance;
And over our doors are all (C2)delicious fruits,
New as well as old,
Which I have saved for you, my beloved.

Chapter 8

The Lovers Speak

1 "Oh that you were like a brother to me
Who nursed at my mother's breasts.
If I found you outdoors, I would kiss you;
No one would despise me, either.

2 "I would lead you and (C1)bring you
Into the house of my mother, who used to instruct me;
I would give you spiced wine to drink from the juice of my pomegranates.

3 "Let (C1)his left hand be under my head,
And his right hand embrace me."

The Groom

4 "(C1)Swear to me, you daughters of Jerusalem:
(F1)Do not disturb or awaken my love
Until she pleases."

Matthew 24:1-31

Chapter 24

Signs of Christ's Return

1 (C1)Jesus (C2)left the temple area and was going on His way (F1)when His disciples came up to point out the temple buildings to Him.2 But He responded and said to them, "Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, (C1)not one stone here will be left upon another, which will not be torn down."

3 And as He was sitting on (C1)the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of (C2)Your coming, and of the (F1)end of the age?"

4 And Jesus answered and said to them, "(C1)See to it that no one (F1)misleads you.5 "For (C1)many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the (F1)Christ,' and they will (F2)mislead many people.6 "And you will be hearing of (C1)wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end.7 "For (C1)nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be (C2)famines and earthquakes in various places.8 "(C1)But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pains.

9 "(C1)Then they will hand you over to tribulation and kill you, and (C2)you will be hated by all nations because of My name.10 "And at that time many will (F1)(C1)fall away, and they will (F2)betray one another and hate one another.11 "And many (C1)false prophets will rise up and (F1)mislead many people.12 "And because lawlessness is increased, (F1)most people's love will become cold.13 "(C1)But the one who endures to the end is the one who will be saved.14 "This (C1)gospel of the kingdom (C2)shall be preached in the whole (F1)(C3)world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.

Perilous Times

15 "Therefore when you see the (C1)ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in (C2)the holy place—(F1)(C3)let the (F2)reader understand—16 then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains.17 "(F1)Whoever is on (C1)the (F2)housetop must not go down to get things out of his house.18 "And (F1)whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak.19 "But (C1)woe to those women who are pregnant, and to those who are nursing babies in those days!20 "Moreover, pray that (F1)when you flee, it will not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath.21 "For then there will be a (C1)great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will again.22 "And if those days had not been cut short, no (F1)life would have been saved; but for (C1)the sake of the (F2)elect those days will be cut short.23 "(C1)Then if anyone says to you, 'Behold, here is the (F1)Christ,' or 'He is over here,' do not believe him.24 "For false christs and (C1)false prophets will arise and will provide great (F1)(C2)signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even (C3)the (F2)elect.25 "Behold, I have told you in advance.26 "So if they say to you, 'Behold, He is in the wilderness,' do not go out; or, 'Behold, He is in the inner rooms,' do not believe them.27 "(C1)For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will the (C2)coming of the (C3)Son of Man (F1)be.28 "(C1)Wherever the corpse is, there the (F1)vultures will gather.

The Glorious Return

29 "But immediately after the (C1)tribulation of those days (C2)THE SUN WILL BE DARKENED, AND THE MOON WILL NOT GIVE ITS LIGHT, AND (C3)THE STARS WILL FALL from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.30 "And then (C1)the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see (C2)the SON OF MAN COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF THE SKY with power and great glory.31 "And (C1)He will send forth His angels with (C2)A GREAT TRUMPET BLAST, and THEY WILL GATHER TOGETHER His (F1)(C3)elect from (C4)the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.<
