Chapter 11

Rewards of Obedience

1 "You shall therefore (C1)love the LORD your God, and always (C2)keep His directive, His statutes, His ordinances, and His commandments.2 "Know this day (C1)that I am not speaking with your sons who have not known and who have not seen the (F1)discipline of the LORD your God—His greatness, His mighty hand, His outstretched arm,3 and (C1)His signs and His works which He did in the midst of Egypt to Pharaoh the king of Egypt and to all his land;4 and what He did to Egypt's army, to its horses and its chariots, (C1)when He made the water of the (F1)Red Sea (F2)engulf them while they were pursuing you, and the LORD (F3)completely eliminated them;5 and what He did to you in the wilderness, until you came to this place;6 and (C1)what He did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, the son of Reuben, when the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their households, their tents, and (C2)every living thing that (F1)followed them, among all Israel—7 but your own eyes have seen all the great work of the LORD which He did.

8 "You shall therefore keep every commandment which I am commanding you today, (C1)so that you may be strong and go in and take possession of the land into which you are about to cross to possess it;9 and (C1)so that you may prolong your days on the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give to them and to their (F1)descendants, (C2)a land flowing with milk and honey.10 "For the land, into which you are entering to possess it, is not like the land of Egypt from which you came, where you used to sow your seed and water it (F1)by your foot like a vegetable garden.11 "But (C1)the land into which you are about to cross to possess it, a land of hills and valleys, drinks water from the rain of heaven,12 a land for which the LORD your God cares; (C1)the eyes of the LORD your God are continually on it, from the (F1)beginning even to the end of the year.

13 "And it shall come about, (C1)if you listen obediently to my commandments which I am commanding you today, (C2)to love the LORD your God and to serve Him (C3)with all your heart and all your soul,14 that (F1)(C1)He will provide rain for your land in its season, the (F2)(C2)early and (F3)late rain, so that you may gather your grain, your new wine, and your oil.15 "(F1)(C1)He will also provide grass in your field for your cattle, and (C2)you will eat and be satisfied.16 "(F1)(C1)Beware that your hearts are not easily deceived, and that you do not turn away and serve other gods, and worship them.17 "Otherwise, (C1)the anger of the LORD will be kindled against you, and He will (C2)shut up the sky (C3)so that there will be no rain, and the ground will not yield its produce; then (C4)you will quickly perish from the good land which the LORD is giving you.

18 "(C1)You shall therefore take these words of mine to (F1)heart and to soul; and you shall tie them as a sign on your (F2)hand, and they shall be as (F3)frontlets (F4)on your forehead.19 "(C1)You shall also teach them to your sons, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk along the road, when you lie down, and when you get up.20 "(C1)And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,21 so that (C1)your days and the days of your sons may be increased on the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give them, as (F1)(C2)long as the heavens are above the earth.22 "For if you are (C1)careful to keep all of this commandment which I am commanding you to do, (C2)to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and (C3)cling to Him,23 then the LORD will (F1)(C1)dispossess all these nations from you, and you will (F1)(C2)dispossess nations greater and mightier than you.24 "(C1)Every place on which the sole of your foot steps shall be yours; (C2)your border will be from the wilderness to Lebanon, and from the river, the river Euphrates, as far as (F1)the western sea.25 "(C1)No one will be able to stand against you; the LORD your God will (F1)instill the dread of you and the fear of you in all the land on which you set foot, just as He has spoken to you.

26 "(C1)See, I am placing before you today a blessing and a curse:27 the (C1)blessing, if you listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, which I am commanding you today;28 and the (C1)curse, if you do not listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside from the way which I am commanding you today, (F1)by following other gods which you have not known.

29 "And it shall come about, when the LORD your God brings you into the land where you are entering to possess it, (C1)that you shall place the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.30 "Are they not across the Jordan, west of the road toward the sunset, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, opposite (C1)Gilgal, beside (C2)the (F1)oaks of Moreh?31 "For you are about to cross the Jordan to go in to take possession of the land which the LORD your God is giving you, and (C1)you shall possess it and live in it,32 and you shall be careful to do all the statutes and the judgments which I am placing before you today.

Chapter 12

Laws of the Sanctuary

1 "These are the statutes and the judgments which you shall carefully (F1)follow in the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess (F2)(C1)as long as you live on the (F3)earth.2 "You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations whom you are going to dispossess serve their gods, on the (C1)high mountains, on the hills, and under every leafy tree.3 "And (C1)you shall tear down their altars and smash their memorial stones to pieces, and burn their (F1)Asherim in the fire, and cut to pieces the carved images of their gods; and you shall (C2)eliminate their name from that place.4 "You shall not act this way toward the LORD your God.5 "(C1)But you shall seek the LORD at the place which the LORD your God will choose from all your tribes, to establish His name there for His dwelling, and you shall come there.6 "You shall bring there your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, (C1)your tithes, the (F1)contribution of your hand, your vowed offerings, your (F2)voluntary offerings, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock.7 "There you and your households shall eat before the LORD your God, and (C1)rejoice in all (F1)your undertakings in which the LORD your God has blessed you.

8 "You shall not do at all what we are doing here today, (C1)everyone doing whatever is right in his own eyes;9 for you have not as yet come to (C1)the resting place and the (C2)inheritance which the LORD your God is giving you.10 "When you cross the Jordan and live in the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and (C1)He gives you rest from all your enemies around you so that you live in security,11 (C1)then it shall come about that the place in which the LORD your God will choose for His name to dwell, there you shall bring everything that I command you: your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and the (F1)contribution of your hand, and all your choice vowed offerings which you will vow to the LORD.12 "And you shall (C1)rejoice before the LORD your God, you and your sons and daughters, your male and female slaves, and the (C2)Levite who is within your gates, since (C3)he has no portion or inheritance with you.

13 "(C1)Be careful that you do not offer your burnt offerings in any cultic place that you see,14 but only in the place which the LORD chooses in one of your tribes: there you shall offer your burnt offerings, and there you shall do everything that I command you.

15 "(C1)However, you may slaughter and eat meat within any of your gates, (F1)whatever you desire, according to the blessing of the LORD your God which He has given you; the unclean and the clean alike may eat it, as (C2)the gazelle and the deer.16 "(C1)Only you shall not eat the blood; (C2)you are to pour it out on the ground like water.17 "(C1)You are not allowed to eat within your gates the tithe of your grain, new wine, or oil, or the firstborn of your herd or flock, or any of your vowed offerings which you vow, or your (F1)voluntary offerings, or the (F2)contribution of your hand.18 "But (C1)you shall eat them before the LORD your God in (C2)the place which the LORD your God will choose, you and your son and daughter, and your male and female slaves, and the (C3)Levite who is within your gates; and you shall (C4)rejoice before the LORD your God in all (F1)your undertakings.19 "(C1)Be careful that you do not abandon the Levite (F1)as long as you live in your land.

20 "When the LORD your God extends your border (C1)as He has (F1)promised you, and you say, 'I will eat meat,' because (F2)you desire to eat meat, then you may eat meat, (F3)whatever you desire.21 "If the place where the LORD your God chooses to put His name is too far from you, then you may slaughter animals from your herd and flock which the LORD has given you, as I have commanded you; and you may eat within your gates (F1)whatever you desire.22 "Just as a gazelle or a deer is eaten, so you may eat it; the unclean and the clean alike may eat it.23 "Only be sure (C1)not to eat the blood, for the blood is the (F1)life, and you shall not eat the (F1)life with the flesh.24 "You shall not eat it; you shall pour it out on the ground like water.25 "You shall not eat it, so that (C1)it may go well for you and your sons after you, since (C2)you will be doing what is right in the sight of the LORD.26 "(C1)Only your holy things which you may have and your vowed offerings, you shall take and go to the place which the LORD chooses.27 "And (C1)you shall offer your burnt offerings, the flesh and the blood, on the altar of the LORD your God; and the blood of your sacrifices shall be poured out on the altar of the LORD your God, and (C2)you shall eat the flesh.

28 "Be careful and listen to all these words which I am commanding you, so that (C1)it may go well for you and your sons after you forever, for you will be doing what is good and right in the sight of the LORD your God.

29 "When (C1)the LORD your God cuts off from you the nations which you are going in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and live in their land,30 be careful that you are not ensnared (F1)to follow them, after they are destroyed from your presence, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, 'How do these nations serve their gods, that I also may do likewise?'31 "(C1)You shall not behave this way toward the LORD your God, because every abominable act which the LORD hates, they have done for their gods; for (C2)they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire for their gods.

32 "(F1)(C1)Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; (C2)you shall not add to nor take anything away from it.

Job 9

Chapter 9

Job Says There Is No Arbitrator between God and Mankind

1 Then Job responded,

2 "In truth I know that this is so;
But how can a (C1)person be in the right with God?

3 "If one wished to (C1)dispute with Him,
He could not answer Him once in a thousand times.

4 "(C1)Wise in heart and (C2)mighty in strength,
Who has (F1)(C3)defied Him (F2)without harm?

5 "(C1)It is God who removes the mountains, and they do not know how,
When He overturns them in His anger.

6 "It is He who (C1)shakes the earth from its place,
And its (C2)pillars tremble;

7 Who commands the (C1)sun (F1)not to shine,
And puts a seal on the stars;

8 Who alone (C1)stretches out the heavens,
And (F1)(C2)tramples down the waves of the sea;

9 Who makes the (C1)Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades,
And the (F1)(C2)constellations of the south.

10 "It is He who (C1)does great things, (F1)the unfathomable,
And wondrous works without number.

11 "If He were to pass by me, (C1)I would not see Him;
Were He to move past me, I would not perceive Him.

12 "If He were to snatch away, who could (C1)restrain Him?
Who could say to Him, '(C2)What are You doing?'

13 "God will not turn back His anger;
Beneath Him the helpers of (F1)(C1)Rahab cower.

14 "How then can (C1)I (F1)answer Him,
And choose my words (F2)before Him?

15 "For (C1)though I were right, I could not (F1)answer;
I would have to (C2)implore the mercy of my Judge.

16 "If I called and He answered me,
I could not believe that He was listening to my voice.

17 "For He (C1)bruises me with a storm
And multiplies my wounds without cause.

18 "He will (C1)not allow me to get my breath,
But He saturates me with (C2)bitterness.

19 "If it is a matter of power, (C1)behold, He is the strong one!
And if it is a matter of justice, who can summon (F1)Him?

20 "(C1)Though I am righteous, my mouth will (C2)condemn me;
Though I am guiltless, He will declare me guilty.

21 "I am (C1)guiltless;
I do not take notice of myself;
I (C2)reject my life.

22 "It is all one; therefore I say,
'He (C1)destroys the guiltless and the wicked.'

23 "If the whip kills suddenly,
He (C1)mocks the despair of the innocent.

24 "The earth (C1)is handed over to the wicked;
He (C2)covers the faces of its judges.
If it is not He, then who is it?

25 "Now (C1)my days are swifter than a runner;
They flee away, (C2)they see no good.

26 "They slip by like (C1)reed boats,
Like an (C2)eagle that swoops on (F1)its prey.

27 "Though I say, 'I will forget (C1)my complaint,
I will (F1)put my face in order and be cheerful,'

28 I am (C1)afraid of all my pains,
I know that (C2)You will not acquit me.

29 "I am (C1)guilty,
Why then should I struggle in vain?

30 "If I (C1)washed myself with snow,
And cleansed (C2)my hands with lye,

31 Then You would plunge me into the pit,
And my own clothes would loathe me.

32 "For (C1)He is not a man, as I am, that (C2)I may answer Him—
That we may go to (F1)court together!

33 "There is no (C1)arbitrator between us,
Who can place his hand upon us both.

34 "Let Him (C1)remove His rod from me,
And let not the dread of Him terrify me.

35 "Then I (C1)would speak and not fear Him;
But I am not like that in myself.

Acts 1

Chapter 1

Introduction

1 The first account I (F1)composed, (C1)Theophilus, about all that Jesus (C2)began to do and teach,2 until the day when He (C1)was taken up to heaven, after He (C2)had given orders (F1)by the Holy Spirit to (C3)the apostles whom He had (C4)chosen.3 To (F1)these (C1)He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of (C2)things regarding the kingdom of God.4 (F1)Gathering them together, He commanded them (C1)not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for (F2)(C2)what the Father had promised, "Which," He said, "you heard of from Me;5 for (C1)John baptized (F1)with water, but you will be baptized (F1)with the Holy Spirit (F2)(C2)not many days from now."

6 So, when they had come together, they began asking Him, saying, "Lord, (C1)is it at this time that You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?"7 But He said to them, "It is not for you to know periods of time or appointed times which (C1)the Father has set by His own authority;8 but you will receive power (C1)when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be (C2)My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and (C3)Samaria, and as far as (C4)the remotest part of the earth."

The Ascension

9 And after He had said these things, (C1)He was lifted up while they were watching, and a cloud took Him up, out of their sight.10 And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, then behold, (C1)two men in white clothing stood beside them,11 and they said, "(C1)Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who (C2)has been taken up from you into heaven, will (C3)come in the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven."

The Upper Room

12 Then they (C1)returned to Jerusalem from the (F1)(C2)mountain called (F2)Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a (F3)Sabbath day's journey away.13 When they had entered the city, they went up to (C1)the upstairs room where they were staying, that is, (C2)Peter, John, (F1)James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, (F1)James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and (C3)Judas the (F2)son of (F1)James.14 All these (C1)were continually devoting themselves with one (F1)mind to prayer, along with (C2)the women, and Mary the (C3)mother of Jesus, and with His (C3)brothers.

15 (F1)At this time Peter stood up among (C1)the brothers and sisters (a group of about 120 (F2)people was there together), and said,16 "(F1)Brothers, (C1)the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, (C2)who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.17 "For he was (C1)counted among us and received his share in (C2)this ministry."18 (Now this man (C1)acquired a field with (C2)the price of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out.19 And it became known to all the residents of Jerusalem; as a result that field was called Hakeldama in (C1)their own language, that is, Field of Blood.)20 "For it is written in the book of Psalms:

'(C1)MAY HIS RESIDENCE BE MADE DESOLATE,
AND MAY THERE BE NONE LIVING IN IT';
and,
'(C2)MAY ANOTHER TAKE HIS (F1)OFFICE.'

21 "Therefore it is necessary that of the men who have accompanied us all the time that (C1)the Lord Jesus went in and out (F1)among us—22 (C1)beginning (F1)with the baptism of John until the day that He (C2)was taken up from us—one of these must become a (C3)witness with us of His resurrection."23 So they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was also called Justus), and (C1)Matthias.24 And they (C1)prayed and said, "You, Lord, who (C2)know the hearts of all people, show which one of these two You have chosen25 to (F1)occupy (C1)this ministry and (C2)apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place."26 And they (F1)(C1)drew lots for them, and the lot fell (F2)to (C2)Matthias; and he was added to (C3)the eleven apostles.
