Deuteronomy 19-20
Chapter 19
Cities of Refuge
1 "(C1)When the LORD your God cuts off the nations whose land the LORD your God is giving you, and you dispossess them and settle in their cities and in their houses,2 (C1)you shall set aside for yourself three cities in the midst of your land which the LORD your God is giving you to (F1)possess.3 "You shall prepare the (F1)roads for yourself, and divide into three regions the territory of your land which the LORD your God will give you as an inheritance, (F2)so that anyone who commits manslaughter may flee there.
4 "(C1)Now this is the case of the one who commits manslaughter, who may flee there and live: when he (F1)kills his friend (F2)unintentionally, (F3)not hating him previously—5 as when a person goes into the forest with his friend to cut wood, and his hand (F1)swings the axe to cut down the tree, and the iron head slips off the (F2)handle and (F3)strikes his friend so that he dies—he may flee to one of these cities and live.6 "Otherwise, the avenger of blood might pursue (F1)him (F2)in the heat of his anger, and overtake him because the way is long, and (F3)take his life, though he was not sentenced to death since he had not hated him previously.7 "Therefore I command you, saying, 'You shall set aside for yourself three cities.'
8 "And if the LORD your God (C1)enlarges your territory, just as He has sworn to your fathers, and gives you all the land that He (F1)promised to give your fathers—9 if you (F1)carefully follow all of this commandment which I am commanding you today, (C1)to love the LORD your God, and to walk in His ways always—(C2)then you shall add three more cities for yourself, besides these three.10 "So innocent blood will not be shed in the midst of your land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and (C1)guilt for bloodshed will not be on you.
11 "But (C1)if there is a person who hates his neighbor, and waits in ambush for him and rises up against him and strikes (F1)him so that he dies, and he flees to one of these cities,12 then the elders of his city shall send men and take him from there, and hand him over to the avenger of blood, so that he may die.13 "(F1)(C1)You shall not pity him, but (C2)you shall eliminate the guilt for the bloodshed of the innocent from Israel, so that it may go well for you.
Laws of Landmark and Testimony
14 "(C1)You shall not displace your neighbor's boundary marker, which the ancestors have set, in your inheritance which you will inherit in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to (F1)possess.
15 "(C1)A single witness shall not rise up against a person regarding any wrongdoing or any sin (F1)that he commits; on the (F2)testimony of two or three witnesses a matter shall be confirmed.16 "(C1)If a malicious witness rises up against a person to testify against him of wrongdoing,17 then both people who have the dispute shall stand (C1)before the LORD, before the priests and the judges who will be in office in those days.18 "And the judges (C1)shall investigate thoroughly, and if the witness is a false witness and he has testified against his brother falsely,19 then (C1)you shall do to him just as he had planned to do to his brother. So you shall eliminate the evil from among you.20 "And (C1)the rest of the people will hear and be afraid, and will never again do such an evil thing among you.21 "So (F1)(C1)you shall not show pity: (C2)life for life, (C3)eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, and foot for foot.
Chapter 20
Laws of Warfare
1 "When you go out to battle against your enemies and see (C1)horses, chariots, and people more numerous than you, (C2)do not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt, is with you.2 "When you are approaching the battle, the priest shall come forward and speak to the people.3 "He shall say to them, 'Hear, Israel, you are approaching the battle against your enemies today. Do not be fainthearted. (C1)Do not be afraid, or panic, or be terrified by them,4 for the LORD your God (C1)is the One who is going with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.'5 "The officers also shall speak to the people, saying, 'Who is the man that has built a new house but has not (C1)dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, otherwise he might die in the battle and another man would dedicate it.6 'And who is the man that has planted a vineyard but has not (F1)put it to use? Let him go and return to his house, otherwise he might die in the battle and another man (F1)would put it to use.7 '(C1)And who is the man that is (F1)betrothed to a woman and has not (F2)married her? Let him go and return to his house, otherwise he might die in the battle and another man would (F3)marry her.'8 "Then the officers shall speak further to the people and say, '(C1)Who is the man that is afraid and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his house, so that (F1)he does not make his brothers' hearts melt like his heart!'9 "And when the officers have finished speaking to the people, they shall appoint commanders of armies at the head of the people.
10 "When you approach a city to fight against it, you shall (F1)offer it terms of peace.11 "And if it (F1)agrees to make peace with you and opens to you, then all the people who are found in it shall become your (C1)forced labor and serve you.12 "However, if it does not make peace with you, but makes war against you, then you shall besiege it.13 "When the LORD your God gives it into your hand, (C1)you shall strike all the (F1)men in it with the edge of the sword.14 "However, the women, the children, (C1)the animals, and everything that is in the city, all of its spoils, you shall take as plunder for yourself; and you shall (F1)use the spoils of your enemies which the LORD your God has given you.15 "This is what you shall do to all the cities that are very far from you, which are not of the cities of these nations (F1)nearby.16 "(C1)Only in the cities of these peoples that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, you shall not leave anything that breathes alive.17 "Instead, you shall (F1)utterly destroy them, the Hittite and the Amorite, the Canaanite and the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, just as the LORD your God has commanded you,18 so that they will not teach you to do (F1)(C1)all the same detestable practices of theirs which they have done for their gods, (F2)by which you would (C2)sin against the LORD your God.
19 "When you besiege a city for a long time, to make war against it in order to capture it, you shall not destroy its trees by swinging an axe against them; for you may eat from them, so you shall not cut them down. For (F1)is the tree of the field a human, that it should (F2)be besieged by you?20 "Only the trees that you know (F1)are not fruit trees you shall destroy and cut down, so that you may construct siegeworks against the city that is making war against you until it falls.
Job 13
Chapter 13
Job Says His Friends' Proverbs Are Ashes
1 "(C1)Behold, my eye has seen all this,
My ear has heard and understood it.
2 "(C1)What you know I also know;
I am not inferior to you.
3 "But (C1)I would speak to (F1)the Almighty,
And I desire to (C2)argue with God.
4 "But you (C1)smear me with lies;
You are all (C2)worthless physicians.
5 "Oh that you would (C1)be completely silent,
And that it would become your wisdom!
6 "Please hear my argument,
And give your attention to the contentions of my lips.
7 "Will you (C1)speak what is unjust for God,
And speak what is deceitful for Him?
8 "Will you (C1)show partiality for Him?
Will you contend for God?
9 "Will it go well when He examines you?
Or (C1)will you deceive Him as one deceives a man?
10 "He will certainly punish you
If you secretly (C1)show partiality.
11 "Will (C1)His (F1)majesty not terrify you,
And the dread of Him fall upon you?
12 "Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes,
Your defenses are defenses of clay.
Job Is Sure He Will Be Vindicated
13 "(C1)Be silent before me so that I may speak;
Then let come upon me what may.
14 "Why should I take my flesh in my teeth,
And (C1)put my life in my (F1)hands?
15 "(C1)Though He slay me,
I will (F1)hope in Him.
Nevertheless I (C2)will argue my ways (F2)before Him.
16 "This also will be my (C1)salvation,
For (C2)a godless person cannot come before His presence.
17 "Listen carefully to my speech,
And let my declaration fill your ears.
18 "Behold now, I have (C1)prepared my case;
I know that (C2)I will be vindicated.
19 "(C1)Who could contend with me?
For then I would be silent and (C2)die.
20 "Only two things I ask that You do not do to me,
Then I will not hide from Your face:
21 (C1)Remove Your (F1)hand from me,
And may the dread of You not terrify me.
22 "Then call and (C1)I will answer;
Or let me speak, then reply to me.
23 "(C1)How many are my guilty deeds and sins?
Make known to me my wrongdoing and my sin.
24 "Why do You (C1)hide Your face
And consider me (C2)Your enemy?
25 "Will You scare away a (C1)scattered leaf?
Or will You pursue the dry (C2)chaff?
26 "For You write (C1)bitter things against me
And (C2)make me inherit the guilty deeds of my youth.
27 "You (C1)put my feet in the stocks
And watch all my paths;
You (F1)set a limit for the soles of my feet,
28 While (F1)I am decaying like a (C1)rotten thing,
Like a garment that is moth-eaten.
Acts 4:1-22
Chapter 4
Peter and John Arrested
1 As they were speaking to the people, the priests and (C1)the captain of the temple guard and (C2)the Sadducees (C3)came up to them,2 being greatly disturbed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming (F1)(C1)in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.3 And they laid hands on them and (C1)put them in prison until the next day, for it was already evening.4 But many of those who had heard the (F1)message believed; and (C1)the number of the men came to be about five thousand.
5 On the next day, their (C1)rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem;6 and (C1)Annas the high priest was there, and (C2)Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and all who were of high-priestly descent.7 When they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire, "By what power, or in what name, have you done this?"8 Then Peter, (F1)(C1)filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "(F2)(C2)Rulers and elders of the people,9 if we are (F1)on trial today for (C1)a benefit done to a sick man, as to (F2)how this man has been made well,10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that (F1)(C1)by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom (C2)God raised from the dead—(F1)by (F2)this name this man stands here before you in good health.11 "(F1)(C1)He is the (C2)STONE WHICH WAS (C3)REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE.12 "And there is salvation in (C1)no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among mankind by which we must be saved."
Threat and Release
13 Now as they observed the (C1)confidence of (C2)Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and (C3)began to recognize them (F1)as having been with Jesus.14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply.15 But when they had ordered them to leave the (F1)(C1)Council, they began to confer with one another,16 saying, "(C1)What are we to do with these men? For the fact that a (C2)noteworthy (F1)miracle has taken place through them is apparent to all who live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.17 "But so that it will not spread any further among the people, let's warn them not to speak any longer to any person (C1)in this name."18 And when they had summoned them, they (C1)commanded them not to speak or teach at all (F1)in the name of Jesus.19 But (C1)Peter and John answered and said to them, "(C2)Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, make your own judgment;20 for (C1)we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard."21 When they had threatened them further, they let them go (finding no basis on which to punish them) (C1)on account of the people, because they were all (C2)glorifying God for what had happened;22 for the man on whom this (F1)miracle of healing had been performed was more than forty years old.<
