Deuteronomy 31-32

Chapter 31

Moses' Last Counsel

1 So Moses went and spoke these words to all Israel.2 And he said to them, "I am (C1)120 years old today; (C2)I am no longer able to (F1)go out and come in, and the LORD has told me, '(C3)You shall not cross this Jordan.'3 "(C1)It is the LORD your God who is going to cross ahead of you; He Himself will destroy these nations before you, and you shall dispossess them. (C2)Joshua is the one who is going to cross ahead of you, just as the LORD has spoken.4 "And the LORD will do to them just as He did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land, when He destroyed them.5 "(C1)The LORD will turn them over to you, and you will do to them in accordance with all the commandments which I have commanded you.6 "(C1)Be strong and courageous, (C2)do not be afraid or in dread of them, for (C3)the LORD your God is the One who is going with you. (C4)He will not desert you or abandon you."

7 Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, "(C1)Be strong and courageous, for you will go with this people into the land which the LORD has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you will give it to them as an inheritance.8 "And (C1)the LORD is the One who is going ahead of you; He will be with you. (C2)He will not desert you or abandon you. Do not fear and do not be dismayed."

9 So Moses wrote this Law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi (C1)who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel.10 Then Moses commanded them, saying, "At the end of every seven years, at the time of (C1)the year of the release of debts, at the (C2)Feast of Booths,11 when all Israel comes (C1)to appear before the LORD your God at (C2)the place which He will choose, (C3)you shall read this Law before all Israel (F1)so that they hear it.12 "Assemble the people, the men, the women, the children, and the stranger who is in your (F1)town, so that they may hear and (C1)learn and fear the LORD your God, and be careful to (F2)follow all the words of this Law.13 "And their children, who have not known, will hear and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as you live on the land (F1)which you are about to cross the Jordan to (F2)possess."

Israel Will Fall Away

14 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, (F1)(C1)the time for you to die is near; call Joshua and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, and I will commission him." (C2)So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the tent of meeting.15 (C1)And the LORD appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar of cloud stood at the entrance of the tent.16 The LORD said to Moses, "Behold, (C1)you are about to (F1)lie down with your fathers; and (C2)this people will arise and play the prostitute with the foreign gods of the land into the midst of which they are going, and (C3)they will abandon Me and break My covenant which I have made with them.17 "(C1)Then My anger will be kindled against them on that day, and (C2)I will abandon them and (C3)hide My face from them, and they will be consumed, and many evils and troubles will find them; so they will say on that day, '(C4)Is it not because our God is not among us that these evils have found us?'18 "But I will assuredly hide My face on that day because of all the evil that they will have done, for they will have turned away to other gods.

19 "Now then, (C1)write this song for yourselves, and teach it to the sons of Israel; put it (F1)on their lips, so that this song may be a witness for Me against the sons of Israel.20 "(C1)For when I bring them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to their fathers, and they eat and are satisfied and (C2)become (F1)prosperous, then they will turn to other gods and serve them, and spurn Me and break My covenant.21 "Then it will come about, (C1)when many evils and troubles find them, that this song will testify before them as a witness (for it shall not be forgotten from the mouth of their (F1)descendants); for (C2)I know their inclination which they are (F2)developing today, before I bring them into the land which I swore."22 (C1)So Moses wrote down this song on the same day, and taught it to the sons of Israel.

Joshua Is Commissioned

23 (C1)Then He commissioned Joshua the son of Nun, and said, "(C2)Be strong and courageous, for you will bring the sons of Israel into the land which I swore to them, and (C3)I will be with you."

24 It came about, when Moses finished writing the words of this Law in a book until they were complete,25 that Moses commanded the Levites (C1)who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying,26 "Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, so that it may (F1)remain there as a witness against you.27 "For I know (C1)your rebellion and (C2)your (F1)stubbornness; behold, as long as I have been alive with you until today, you have been rebellious against the LORD; how much more, then, after my death?28 "Assemble to me all the elders of your tribes and your officers, that I may speak these words in their hearing and (C1)call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against them.29 "For I know that after my death you will (C1)behave very corruptly and turn from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will confront you in the latter days, because you will do that which is evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him to anger with the work of your hands."

30 Then Moses spoke in the hearing of all the assembly of Israel the words of this song, until they were complete:

Chapter 32

The Song of Moses

1 "(C1)Listen, you heavens, and I will speak;
And let the earth hear the words of my mouth!

2 "(C1)May my teaching drip as the rain,
My speech trickle as the dew,
(C2)As droplets on the fresh grass,
And as the showers on the vegetation.

3 "(C1)For I proclaim the name of the LORD;
(C2)Ascribe greatness to our God!

4 "(C1)The Rock! His work is perfect,
(C2)For all His ways are (F1)just;
(C3)A God of faithfulness and without injustice,
Righteous and just is He.

5 "(F1)(C1)They have acted corruptly against Him,
They are not His children, because of their defect;
(C2)But are a perverse and crooked generation.

6 "Is this what you (C1)do to the LORD,
(C2)You foolish and unwise people?
(C3)Is He not your Father who has purchased you?
(C4)He has made you and established you.

7 "Remember the days of old,
Consider the years of all generations.
(C1)Ask your father and he will inform you,
Your elders, and they will tell you.

8 "(C1)When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance,
When He separated the sons of (F1)mankind,
He set the boundaries of the peoples
(C2)According to the number of the (F2)sons of Israel.

9 "(C1)For the LORD'S portion is His people;
Jacob is the allotment of His inheritance.

10 "(C1)He found him in a desert land,
And in the howling wasteland of a wilderness;
He encircled him, He cared for him,
He guarded him as (C2)the (F1)apple of His eye.

11 "(C1)As an eagle stirs up its nest,
And hovers over its young,
(C2)He spread His wings, He caught them,
He carried them on His pinions.

12 "(C1)The LORD alone guided him,
(C2)And there was no foreign god with him.

13 "(C1)He had him ride on the high places of the earth,
And he ate the produce of the field;
(C2)And He had him suck honey from the rock,
And (F1)(C3)oil from the flinty rock,

14 Curds of the herd, and milk of the flock,
With fat of lambs
And rams, the breed of Bashan, and of goats,
(C1)With the best of the wheat;
And you drank wine of the (C2)blood of grapes.

15 "(C1)But (F1)Jeshurun became fat and kicked—
You have become fat, thick, and obstinate—
(C2)Then he abandoned God (C3)who made him,
And (F2)rejected (C4)the Rock of his salvation.

16 "(C1)They made Him jealous with strange gods;
(C2)With abominations they provoked Him to anger.

17 "(C1)They sacrificed to demons, who were not God,
(C2)To gods whom they have not known,
(C3)New gods who came lately,
Whom your fathers did not know.

18 "You forgot (C1)the Rock who fathered you,
(C2)And forgot the God who gave you birth.

19 "(C1)The LORD saw this, and spurned them
(C2)Because of the provocation by His sons and daughters.

20 "Then He said, 'I will hide My face from them,
(C1)I will see what their end will be;
(C2)For they are a perverse generation,
(C3)Sons in whom there is no faithfulness.

21 '(C1)They have made Me jealous with what is not God;
They have provoked Me to anger with their (F1)(C2)idols.
(C3)So I will make them jealous with those who are not a people;
I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation,

22 (C1)For a fire has flared in My anger,
And it burns to the lowest part of (F1)Sheol,
(C2)And devours the earth with its yield,
And sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

23 '(C1)I will add misfortunes to them;
(C2)I will use up My arrows on them.

24 '(C1)They will be wasted by famine, and emaciated by (F1)plague
(C2)And a bitter epidemic;
(C3)And the teeth of beasts I will send against them,
(C4)With the venom of crawling things of the dust.

25 '(C1)Outside the sword will make them childless,
And inside, terror—
(C2)Both young man and virgin,
The nursing child with the man of gray hair.

26 'I would have said, "(C1)I will wipe them out,
(C2)I will remove the mention of (F1)their name from humanity,"

27 Had I not feared the provocation by the enemy,
That their adversaries would misjudge,
That they would say, "(C1)Our hand is (F1)triumphant,
And the LORD has not performed all this."'

28 "(C1)For they are a nation (F1)destitute of counsel,
And there is no understanding in them.

29 "(C1)If only they were wise and they understood this;
(C2)If only they would discern their (F1)future!

30 "(C1)How could one chase a thousand,
And two put ten thousand to flight,
Unless their (C2)Rock had sold them,
And the LORD had given them up?

31 "Indeed, their rock is not like our Rock;
(C1)Even our enemies (F1)themselves judge this.

32 "For their vine is from the vine of Sodom,
And from the fields of Gomorrah;
Their grapes are grapes of (C1)poison,
Their clusters, bitter.

33 "Their wine is the venom of (F1)serpents,
And the (F2)deadly poison of vipers.

34 '(C1)Is it not stored up with Me,
Sealed up in My treasuries?

35 '(C1)Vengeance is Mine, and retribution;
(C2)In due time their foot will slip.
(C3)For the day of their disaster is near,
And the impending things are hurrying to them.'

36 "(C1)For the LORD will vindicate His people,
(C2)And will have compassion on His servants,
When He sees that their (F1)strength is gone,
And there is none remaining, bond or free.

37 "And He will say, '(C1)Where are their gods,
The rock in which they took refuge?

38 '(C1)Those who ate the fat of their sacrifices,
And drank the wine of their drink offering?
(C2)Let them rise up and help you,
Let them be your protection!

39 '(C1)See now that I, I am He,
(C2)And there is no god besides Me;
(C3)It is I who put to death and give life.
(C4)I have wounded and it is I who heal,
(C5)And there is no one who can save anyone from My hand.

40 'Indeed, (C1)I raise My hand to heaven,
And say, as I live forever,

41 (C1)If I have sharpened (F1)My flashing sword,
And My hand has taken hold of justice,
(C2)I will return vengeance on My adversaries,
And I will repay those who hate Me.

42 '(C1)I will make My arrows drunk with blood,
(C2)And My sword will devour flesh,
With the blood of the slain and the captives,
From the long-haired (F1)leaders of the enemy.'

43 "(C1)Rejoice, you nations, with His people;
(C2)For He will avenge the blood of His servants,
(C3)And will return vengeance on His adversaries,
(C4)And will atone for His land and His people."

44 Then Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he, with (F1)(C1)Joshua the son of Nun.45 When Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel,46 he said to them, "(C1)Take to your heart all the words with which I am warning you today, which you will command (C2)your sons to (F1)follow carefully, all the words of this Law.47 "For it is not a (F1)trivial matter for you; indeed (C1)it is your life. And (C2)by this word you will prolong your days in the land, (F2)which you are about to cross the Jordan to (F3)possess."

48 Now (C1)the LORD spoke to Moses that very same day, saying,49 "(C1)Go up to this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab (F1)opposite Jericho, and look at the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israel as a possession.50 "Then you are to die on the mountain where you ascend, and be (C1)gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people,51 (C1)because you broke faith with Me in the midst of the sons of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the (C2)wilderness of Zin, because you did not treat Me as holy in the midst of the sons of Israel.52 "(C1)For you will see the land at a distance but (C2)you will not go there, into the land which I am giving the sons of Israel."

Job 19

Chapter 19

Job Feels Insulted

1 Then Job responded,

2 "How long will you torment (F1)me
And crush me with words?

3 "These ten times you have insulted me;
You are not ashamed to wrong me.

4 "Even if I have truly done wrong,
My error stays with me.

5 "If indeed you (C1)exalt yourselves against me
And prove my disgrace to me,

6 Know then that (C1)God has wronged me
And has surrounded me with (C2)His net.

Everything Is Against Him

7 "Behold, (C1)I cry, 'Violence!' but I get no answer;
I shout for help, but there is no justice.

8 "He has (C1)blocked my way so that I cannot pass,
And He has put (C2)darkness on my paths.

9 "He has (C1)stripped my honor from me
And removed the (C2)crown from my head.

10 "He (C1)breaks me down on every side, and I am gone;
And He has uprooted my (C2)hope (C3)like a tree.

11 "He has also (C1)kindled His anger against me
And (C2)considered me as His enemy.

12 "His (C1)troops come together
And (C2)build up their (F1)way against me
And camp around my tent.

13 "He has (C1)removed my brothers far from me,
And my (C2)acquaintances have completely turned away from me.

14 "My relatives have failed,
And my (C1)close friends have forgotten me.

15 "Those who live in my house and my servant women consider me a stranger.
I am a foreigner in their sight.

16 "I call to my servant, but he does not answer;
I have to implore his favor with my mouth.

17 "My breath is offensive to my wife,
And I am loathsome to my own brothers.

18 "Even young children despise me;
I stand up and they speak against me.

19 "All (F1)my (C1)associates loathe me,
And those I love have turned against me.

20 "My (C1)bone clings to my skin and my flesh,
And I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth.

21 "Pity me, pity me, you friends of mine,
For the (C1)hand of God has struck me.

22 "Why do you (C1)persecute me as God does,
And are not satisfied with my flesh?

Job Says My Redeemer Lives

23 "Oh that my words were written!
Oh that they were (C1)recorded in a book!

24 "That with an iron stylus and lead
They were engraved in the rock forever!

25 "Yet as for me, I know that (C1)my Redeemer lives,
And at the last, He will take His stand on the (F1)earth.

26 "Even after my skin (F1)is destroyed,
Yet from my flesh I will (C1)see God,

27 Whom I, on my part, shall behold for myself,
And whom my eyes will see, and not another.
My (F1)heart (C1)faints (F2)within me!

28 "If you say, 'How shall we (C1)persecute him?'
And '(F1)What pretext for a case against him can we find?'

29 "Then be afraid of (C1)the sword for yourselves,
For wrath brings the punishment of the sword,
So that you may know (C2)there is judgment."

Acts 7:23-8:1

Chapter 7

23 "But when he was approaching the age of forty, (C1)it entered his (F1)mind to visit his countrymen, the sons of Israel.24 "And when he saw one of them being treated unjustly, he defended and took vengeance for the oppressed man by fatally striking the Egyptian.25 "And he thought that his brothers understood that God was granting them (F1)deliverance (F2)through him; but they did not understand.26 "(C1)And on the following day he appeared to them as they were fighting each other, and he tried to reconcile them to peace, by saying, 'Men, you are brothers, why are you injuring each other?'27 "But the one who was injuring his neighbor pushed him away, saying, '(C1)WHO MADE YOU A RULER AND JUDGE OVER US?28 '(C1)YOU DO NOT INTEND TO KILL ME AS YOU KILLED THE EGYPTIAN YESTERDAY, DO YOU?'29 "At this remark, (C1)MOSES FLED AND BECAME A STRANGER IN THE LAND OF (F1)MIDIAN, where he (C2)fathered two sons.

30 "After forty years had passed, (C1)an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning thorn bush.31 "When Moses saw it, he was astonished at the sight; and as he approached to look more closely, the voice of the Lord came:32 '(C1)I AM THE GOD OF YOUR FATHERS, THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND ISAAC, AND JACOB.' Moses shook with fear and did not dare to look closely.33 "(C1)But the LORD said to him, '(F1)(C2)REMOVE YOUR SANDALS FROM YOUR FEET, FOR THE PLACE ON WHICH YOU ARE STANDING IS HOLY GROUND.34 '(C1)I HAVE CERTAINLY SEEN THE OPPRESSION OF MY PEOPLE WHO ARE IN EGYPT, AND HAVE HEARD THEIR GROANING, AND I HAVE COME DOWN TO RESCUE THEM; AND (C2)NOW COME, I WILL SEND YOU TO EGYPT.'

35 "This Moses whom they (C1)disowned, saying, 'WHO MADE YOU A RULER AND A JUDGE?' is the one whom God (F1)sent to be both a ruler and a deliverer with the (F2)help of the angel who appeared to him in the thorn bush.36 "(C1)This man led them out, performing (C2)wonders and (F1)signs in the land of Egypt and in the Red Sea, and in the (C3)wilderness for forty years.37 "This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, '(C1)GOD WILL RAISE UP FOR YOU A PROPHET (F1)LIKE ME FROM YOUR COUNTRYMEN.'38 "This is the one who was in (C1)the (F1)assembly in the wilderness together with (C2)the angel who spoke to him at length on Mount Sinai, and who was with our fathers; and he received (C3)living (C4)words to pass on to you.39 "Our fathers were unwilling to be obedient to him; on the contrary they (C1)rejected him and turned back to Egypt in their hearts,40 (C1)saying to Aaron, 'MAKE US (F1)A GOD WHO WILL GO BEFORE US; FOR THIS MOSES WHO LED US OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT—WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM.'41 "(F1)At that time (C1)they made a (F2)calf and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and were rejoicing in (C2)the works of their hands.42 "But God (C1)turned away and gave them over to (F1)serve the heavenly (F2)lights; as it is written in the book of the prophets: '(C2)YOU DID NOT OFFER ME VICTIMS AND SACRIFICES (C3)FOR FORTY YEARS IN THE WILDERNESS, DID YOU, HOUSE OF ISRAEL?43 '(C1)YOU ALSO TOOK ALONG THE TABERNACLE OF MOLOCH AND THE STAR OF YOUR GOD (F1)ROMPHA, THE IMAGES WHICH YOU MADE TO WORSHIP. I ALSO WILL DEPORT YOU BEYOND BABYLON.'

44 "Our fathers had (C1)the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness, just as He who spoke to Moses directed him to make it (C2)according to the pattern which he had seen.45 "Our fathers in turn received it, and they also (C1)brought it in with Joshua upon dispossessing the (F1)nations that God drove out from our fathers, until the time of David.46 "(F1)(C1)David found favor in God's sight, and (C2)asked that he might (F2)find a dwelling place for the (F3)house of Jacob.47 "But it was (C1)Solomon who built a house for Him.48 "However, (C1)the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands; as the prophet says:

49 '(C1)HEAVEN IS MY THRONE,
AND THE EARTH IS THE FOOTSTOOL OF MY FEET;
WHAT KIND OF HOUSE WILL YOU BUILD FOR ME?' says the Lord,
'OR WHAT PLACE IS THERE FOR MY REST?

50 '(C1)WAS IT NOT MY HAND THAT MADE ALL THESE THINGS?'

51 "You men who are (C1)stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.52 "(C1)Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of (C2)the Righteous One, and (C3)you have now become betrayers and murderers of Him;53 you who received the Law as (C1)ordained by angels, and yet did not keep it."

Stephen Put to Death

54 Now when they heard this, they were (C1)infuriated, and they began gnashing their teeth at him.55 But he, being (C1)full of the Holy Spirit, (C2)looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing (C3)at the right hand of God;56 and he said, "Behold, I see the (C1)heavens opened and (C2)the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God."57 But they shouted with loud voices, and covered their ears and rushed at him with one (F1)mind.58 When they had (C1)driven him out of the city, they began stoning him; and (C2)the witnesses (C3)laid aside their cloaks at the feet of (C4)a young man named Saul.59 They went on stoning Stephen as he (C1)called on the Lord and said, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!"60 Then he (C1)fell on his knees and cried out with a loud voice, "Lord, (C2)do not hold this sin against them!" Having said this, he (F1)(C3)fell asleep.

Chapter 8

Saul Persecutes the Church

1 (C1)Now Saul approved of putting (F1)Stephen to death. And on that day a great persecution (F2)began against (C2)the church in Jerusalem, and they were all (C3)scattered throughout the regions of Judea and (C4)Samaria, except for the apostles.<
