Psalms 121

Chapter 121

Psalm 121

A song of ascents.

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
     where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord ,
     the Maker of heaven(a) and earth.(b)

3 He will not let your foot slip—
     he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches(c) over Israel
     will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord watches over(d) you—
     the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun(e) will not harm you by day,
     nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord will keep you from all harm(f)
     he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
     both now and forevermore.(g)

Psalms 123-125

Chapter 123

Psalm 123

A song of ascents.

1 I lift up my eyes to you,
     to you who sit enthroned(a) in heaven.
2 As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master,
     as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord (b) our God,
     till he shows us his mercy.

3 Have mercy on us, Lord , have mercy on us,
     for we have endured no end of contempt.
4 We have endured no end
     of ridicule from the arrogant,
     of contempt from the proud.

Chapter 124

Psalm 124

A song of ascents. Of David.

1 If the Lord had not been on our side—
     let Israel say(a)
2 if the Lord had not been on our side
     when people attacked us,
3 they would have swallowed us alive
     when their anger flared against us;
4 the flood(b) would have engulfed us,
     the torrent(c) would have swept over us,
5 the raging waters
     would have swept us away.

6 Praise be to the Lord ,
     who has not let us be torn by their teeth.
7 We have escaped like a bird
     from the fowler's snare;(d)
the snare has been broken,(e)
     and we have escaped.
8 Our help is in the name(f) of the Lord ,
     the Maker of heaven(g) and earth.

Chapter 125

Psalm 125

A song of ascents.

1 Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,(a)
     which cannot be shaken(b) but endures forever.
2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem,(c)
     so the Lord surrounds(d) his people
     both now and forevermore.

3 The scepter(e) of the wicked will not remain(f)
     over the land allotted to the righteous,
for then the righteous might use
     their hands to do evil.(g)

4  Lord , do good(h) to those who are good,
     to those who are upright in heart.(i)
5 But those who turn(j) to crooked ways(k)
     the Lord will banish(l) with the evildoers.

Peace be on Israel.(m)

3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine(e)
     within your house;
your children(f) will be like olive shoots(g)
     around your table.
4 Yes, this will be the blessing(h)
     for the man who fears the Lord .(i)

5 May the Lord bless you from Zion;(j)

3 Plowmen have plowed my back
     and made their furrows long.
4 But the Lord is righteous;(e)
     he has cut me free(f) from the cords of the wicked."(g)

5 May all who hate Zion(h)
     be turned back in shame.(i)
6 May they be like grass on the roof,(j)
     which withers(k) before it can grow;
7 a reaper cannot fill his hands with it,(l)
     nor one who gathers fill his arms.
8 May those who pass by not say to them,

3 If you, Lord , kept a record of sins,
     Lord, who could stand?(f)
4 But with you there is forgiveness,(g)
     so that we can, with reverence, serve you.(h)

5 I wait for the Lord ,(i) my whole being waits,(j)
     and in his word(k) I put my hope.
6 I wait for the Lord
     more than watchmen(l) wait for the morning,
     more than watchmen wait for the morning.(m)

7 Israel, put your hope(n) in the Lord ,
     for with the Lord is unfailing love(o)
     and with him is full redemption.(p)
