1 Samuel 23-24

Chapter 23

David Saves Keilah

1 Then they informed David, saying, "Behold, the Philistines are fighting against (C1)Keilah and are plundering the threshing floors."2 So David (C1)inquired of the LORD, saying, "Shall I go and (F1)attack these Philistines?" And the LORD said to David, "Go and (F1)attack the Philistines and save Keilah."3 But David's men said to him, "Behold, we are fearful here in Judah. How much more then if we go to Keilah against the ranks of the Philistines?"4 So David inquired of the LORD once more. And the LORD answered him and said, "Arise, go down to Keilah, for (C1)I am going to hand the Philistines over to you."5 Then David and his men went to Keilah and fought the Philistines; and he drove away their livestock and struck them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.

6 Now it came about, when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech (C1)fled to David at Keilah, that he came down with an ephod in his hand.7 When it was reported to Saul that David had come to Keilah, Saul said, "God has handed him over to me, for he shut himself in by entering a city with double gates and bars."8 So Saul summoned all the people for war, to go down to Keilah to besiege David and his men.9 But David knew that Saul was plotting evil against him; so he said to (C1)Abiathar the priest, "(C2)Bring the ephod here."10 Then David said, "LORD God of Israel, Your servant has heard for certain that Saul is seeking to come to Keilah to destroy the city on my account.11 "Will the citizens of Keilah hand me over to him? Will Saul come down just as Your servant has heard? LORD God of Israel, please, tell Your servant." And the LORD said, "He will come down."12 Then David said, "Will the citizens of Keilah hand me and my men over to Saul?" And the LORD said, "(C1)They will hand you over."13 Then David and his men, (C1)about six hundred, rose up and departed from Keilah, and they went (C2)wherever they could go. When it was reported to Saul that David had escaped from Keilah, he gave up (F1)the pursuit.14 David stayed in the wilderness in the strongholds, and remained in the hill country in the wilderness of (C1)Ziph. And Saul searched for him every day, but (C2)God did not hand him over to him.

Saul Pursues David

15 Now David saw that Saul had come out to seek his life while David was in the wilderness of Ziph, at Horesh.16 And Jonathan, Saul's son, set out and went to David at Horesh, and (F1)(C1)encouraged him in God.17 He said to him, "(C1)Do not be afraid, because the hand of Saul my father will not find you, and you will be king over Israel, and I will be second in command to you; and (C2)Saul my father knows that as well."18 So (C1)the two of them made a covenant before the LORD; and David stayed at Horesh, while Jonathan went to his house.

19 Then (C1)Ziphites came up to Saul at Gibeah, saying, "Is David not keeping himself hidden with us in the strongholds at Horesh, on (C2)the hill of Hachilah, which is south of (F1)Jeshimon?20 "Now then, O king, come down, (F1)since you fully desire to (F2)do so; and (C1)our part shall be to hand him over to the king."21 Saul said, "May you be blessed of the LORD, (C1)since you have had compassion on me.22 "Go now, be more persistent, and investigate and see his place where (F1)he is hiding, and who has seen him there; for I am told that he is very cunning.23 "So look, and learn about all the hiding places where he keeps himself hidden, and return to me with certainty, and I will go with you; and if he is in the land, I will search him out among all the thousands of Judah."

24 So they set out and went to Ziph ahead of Saul. Now David and his men were in the wilderness of (C1)Maon, in the Arabah to the south of (F1)Jeshimon.25 When Saul and his men went to seek him, they informed David, and he came down to the rock and stayed in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard about it, he pursued David in the wilderness of Maon.26 Saul went on one side of the mountain, and David and his men on the other side of the mountain; and David was hurrying to get away from Saul, while Saul and his men (C1)were surrounding David and his men to apprehend them.27 But a messenger came to Saul, saying, "Hurry and come, for the Philistines have launched an attack against the land!"28 So Saul returned from pursuing David and went to confront the Philistines; therefore they called that place (F1)the Rock of Division.29 (F1)And David went up from there and stayed in the strongholds of (C1)Engedi.

Chapter 24

David Spares Saul's Life

1 (F1)Now (C1)when Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, (C2)it was reported to him, saying, "Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi."2 Then (C1)Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and went to search for David and his men in front of the Rocks of the Mountain Goats.3 And he came to the sheepfolds on the way, where there was a cave; and Saul (C1)went in to (F1)relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting in the inner recesses of the cave.4 Then David's men said to him, "Behold, (C1)this is the day of which the LORD said to you, 'Behold; (C2)I am about to hand your enemy over to you, and you shall do to him as it seems good (F1)to you.'" Then David got up and cut off the edge of Saul's robe secretly.5 But it came about afterward that (C1)David's (F1)conscience bothered him because he had cut off the edge of Saul's robe.6 So he said to his men, "(C1)Far be it from me because of the LORD that I would do this thing to my lord, the LORD'S anointed, to reach out with my hand against him, since he is the LORD'S anointed."7 And David rebuked his men with these words and did not allow them to rise up against Saul. And Saul got up, (F1)left the cave, and went on his way.

8 Afterward, however, David got up and went out of the cave, and called after Saul, saying, "My lord the king!" And when Saul looked behind him, (C1)David bowed with his face to the ground and prostrated himself.9 And David said to Saul, "Why do you listen to the words of men (F1)who say, 'Behold, David is seeking (F2)to harm you'?10 "(C1)Behold, this day your eyes have seen that the LORD had handed you over to me today in the cave, and (C2)someone said to kill you, but (F1)I spared you; and I said, 'I will not reach out with my hand against my lord, because he is the LORD'S anointed.'11 "So, (C1)my father, look! Indeed, look at the edge of your robe in my hand! For by the fact that I cut off the edge of your robe but did not kill you, know and understand that there is no evil or (F1)rebellion in my hands, and I have not sinned against you, though you (C2)are lying in wait for my life, to take it.12 "(C1)May the LORD judge between (F1)you and me, and may the LORD take vengeance on you for me; but my hand shall not be against you.13 "As the proverb of the ancients says, '(C1)Out of the wicked comes wickedness'; but my hand shall not be against you.14 "After whom has the king of Israel gone out? Whom are you pursuing? (C1)A dead dog, (C2)a single flea?15 "May (C1)the LORD therefore be judge and decide between (F1)you and me; and may He see and (C2)plead my cause and save me from your hand."

16 When David had finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, "(C1)Is this your voice, my son David?" Then Saul raised his voice and wept.17 (C1)And he said to David, "You are more righteous than I; for (C2)you have dealt well with me, while I have dealt maliciously with you.18 "You have declared today that you have done good to me, that (C1)the LORD handed me over to you and yet you did not kill me.19 "Though if a man (C1)finds his enemy, will he let him go away (F1)unharmed? May the LORD therefore reward you with good in return for what you have done to me this day.20 "Now, behold, (C1)I know that you will certainly be king, and that (C2)the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hand.21 "So now (C1)swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off my (F1)descendants after me, and that you will not eliminate my name from my father's household."22 And David swore an oath to Saul. Then Saul went to his home, but David and his men went up to (C1)the stronghold.

Psalms 67

Chapter 67

The Nations Exhorted to Praise God.

For the music director; with stringed instruments. A Psalm. A Song.

1 God be gracious to us and (C1)bless us,
And (C2)cause His face to shine (F1)upon us— Selah

2 That (C1)Your way may be known on the earth,
(C2)Your salvation among all nations.

3 May the (C1)peoples praise You, God;
May all the peoples praise You.

4 May the (C1)nations be glad and sing for joy;
For You will (C2)judge the peoples with fairness
And (C3)guide the nations on the earth. Selah

5 May the (C1)peoples praise You, God;
May all the peoples praise You.

6 The (C1)earth has yielded its produce;
God, our God, (C2)blesses us.

7 God blesses us,
(F1)So that (C1)all the ends of the earth may fear Him.

Romans 12

Chapter 12

Dedicated Service

1 Therefore (C1)I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to (C2)present your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, (F1)acceptable to God, which is your (F2)spiritual service of worship.2 And do not (C1)be conformed to (C2)this (F1)world, but be transformed by the (C3)renewing of your mind, so that you may (F2)(C4)prove what the will of God is, that which is good and (F3)acceptable and perfect.

3 For through (C1)the grace given to me I say to everyone among you (C2)not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to (C3)each a measure of faith.4 For (C1)just as we have many parts in one body and all (F1)the body's parts do not have the same function,5 so we, (C1)who are many, are (C2)one body in Christ, and individually parts of one another.6 However, since we have gifts that (C1)differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to use them properly: if (C2)prophecy, (F1)in proportion to one's faith;7 if (F1)(C1)service, in the act of serving; or the one who (C2)teaches, in the act of teaching;8 or the one who (F1)(C1)exhorts, in the work of (F2)exhortation; the one who gives, with (F3)(C2)generosity; (C3)the one who (F4)is in leadership, with diligence; the one who shows mercy, with (C4)cheerfulness.

9 (F1)(C1)Love must be free of hypocrisy. (C2)Detest what is evil; cling to what is good.10 Be (C1)devoted to one another in brotherly love; (F1)give preference to one another (C2)in honor,11 not lagging behind in diligence, (C1)fervent in spirit, (C2)serving the Lord;12 (C1)rejoicing in hope, (C2)persevering in tribulation, (C3)devoted to prayer,13 (C1)contributing to the needs of the (F1)saints, (F2)(C2)practicing hospitality.

14 (C1)Bless those who persecute (F1)you; bless and do not curse.15 (C1)Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.16 (C1)Be of the same mind toward one another; (C2)do not be (F1)haughty in mind, but (F2)associate with the lowly. (C3)Do not be wise in your own estimation.17 (C1)Never repay evil for evil to anyone. (F1)(C2)Respect what is right in the sight of all people.18 If possible, (C1)so far as it depends on you, (C2)be at peace with all people.19 (C1)Never take your own revenge, beloved, but (F1)leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written: "(C2)VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord.20 "(C1)BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM; IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD."21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
