1 Kings 10

Chapter 10

The Queen of Sheba

1 (C1)Now when the (C1)queen of (C2)Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon in relation to the name of the LORD, she came (C3)to test him with riddles.2 So she came to Jerusalem with a very large entourage, with camels (C1)carrying balsam oil and a very large quantity of gold and precious stones. When she came to Solomon, she spoke to him about everything that was in her heart.3 And Solomon (F1)answered all her questions; nothing was concealed from the king which he did not explain to her.4 When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon, and the house that he had built,5 and the food of his table, the seating of his servants, the service of his waiters and their attire, his cupbearers, and his burnt offerings which he offered at the house of the LORD, (F1)she was breathless.6 Then she said to the king, "It was a true (F1)story that I heard in my own land about your words and your wisdom.7 "But I did not believe the (F1)stories until I came and my own eyes saw it all. And behold, the half of it was not reported to me. You have exceeded in wisdom and prosperity the report which I heard.8 "(C1)Blessed are your men, and blessed are these servants of yours who stand before you continually and hear your wisdom!9 "(C1)Blessed be the LORD your God who delighted in you to put you on the throne of Israel; (C2)because the LORD loves Israel forever, He made you king, (C3)to do justice and righteousness."10 Then (C1)she gave the king (F1)120 talents of gold, and a very large amount of balsam oil and precious stones. Never again did such a large quantity of balsam oil come in as that which the queen of Sheba gave King Solomon.

11 (C1)And the ships of Hiram as well, which brought gold from Ophir, brought in from Ophir a very great number of almug trees and precious stones.12 (C1)The king made from the almug trees supports for the house of the LORD and for the king's house, and lyres and harps for the singers; such almug trees have not come in again, nor have they been seen to this day.

13 And King Solomon granted the queen of Sheba everything she desired, whatever she requested, besides what he gave her in proportion to (F1)his royal bounty. Then she (F2)departed and went to her own land (F3)together with her servants.

Wealth, Splendor, and Wisdom

14 (C1)Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was (F1)666 talents of gold,15 besides that from the traders, and the (F1)wares of the merchants and all the kings of the (C1)Arabs and the governors of the country.16 (C1)King Solomon made two hundred large shields of beaten gold, (F1)using six hundred shekels of gold on each large shield.17 And he made (C1)three hundred small shields of beaten gold, (F1)using (F2)three minas of gold on each shield; and (C2)the king put them in the house of the timber of Lebanon.18 Moreover, the king made a large throne of (C1)ivory and overlaid it with fine gold.19 There were six steps to the throne and a round top to the throne at its back, and (F1)armrests (F2)on each side of the seat, and two lions standing beside the (F1)armrests.20 Twelve lions were standing there on the six steps on the one side and on the other; nothing like it was made for (F1)any other kingdom.21 Now all King Solomon's drinking utensils were of gold, and all the utensils of the house of the timber of Lebanon were of pure gold. None was of silver; it was not considered as amounting to anything in the days of Solomon.22 For (C1)the king had the ships of Tarshish at sea with Hiram's ships; once every three years the ships of Tarshish would come carrying gold and silver, ivory, monkeys, and peacocks.

23 (C1)So King Solomon became greater than all the kings of the earth in wealth and wisdom.24 And all the earth was seeking the (F1)attention of Solomon, (C1)to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.25 And (C1)they were bringing, everyone, (F1)a gift: articles of silver and gold, garments, weapons, balsam oil, horses, and mules, so much year by year.

26 (C1)Now Solomon gathered chariots and horsemen; and he had 1,400 chariots and twelve thousand horsemen, and he (F1)stationed them in the (C2)chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem.27 (C1)And the king made silver as common as stones in Jerusalem, and he made cedars as plentiful as sycamore trees that are in the (F1)lowland.28 (C1)Also Solomon's import of horses was from Egypt and Kue, and the king's merchants acquired them from Kue for a price.29 A chariot (F1)was imported from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for 150; and (F2)by the same means they exported them (C1)to all the kings of the Hittites and to the kings of the Arameans.

Hosea 11:12-12:14

Chapter 11

12 (F1)Ephraim surrounds Me with (C1)lies
And the house of Israel with deceit;
(F2)Judah is still unruly against God,
Even against the Holy One who is faithful.

Chapter 12

Ephraim Reminded

1 (F1)Ephraim feeds on (C1)wind,
And pursues the (C2)east wind continually;
He multiplies lies and violence.
Moreover, (F2)he makes a covenant with Assyria,
And oil is brought to Egypt.

2 The LORD also has a (C1)case against Judah,
And will punish Jacob (C2)according to his ways;
He will repay him according to his deeds.

3 In the womb he (C1)took his brother by the heel,
And in his mature strength he (C2)contended with God.

4 Yes, he wrestled with the angel and prevailed;
He wept and (C1)implored His favor.
He found Him at (C2)Bethel,
And there He spoke with us,

5 And the LORD, the God of armies,
The LORD is His (F1)(C1)name.

6 So as for you, (C1)return to your God,
(C2)Maintain (F1)kindness and justice,
And (C3)wait for your God continually.

7 A (F1)merchant, in whose hands are fraudulent (C1)balances,
Loves to exploit.

8 And Ephraim said, "I have certainly become (C1)rich,
I have found wealth for myself;
In all my labors they will find in me
(C2)No wrongdoing, which would be sin."

9 But I have been the LORD your God since the land of Egypt;
I will make you (C1)live in tents again,
As in the days of the appointed festival.

10 I have also spoken to the (C1)prophets,
And I (F1)provided many visions,
And through the prophets I spoke in (C2)parables.

11 Is there injustice in Gilead?
Certainly they are worthless.
In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls,
Yes, (C1)their altars are like stone heaps
Beside the furrows of a field.

12 Now (C1)Jacob fled to the (F1)land of Aram,
And (C2)Israel worked for a wife,
And for a wife he kept sheep.

13 But by a (C1)prophet the LORD brought Israel up from Egypt,
And by a prophet he was protected.

14 (C1)Ephraim has provoked God to bitter anger;
So his Lord will leave his (C2)guilt for bloodshed on him
And bring his (C3)disgrace back to him.

Mark 15:1-20

Chapter 15

Jesus before Pilate

1 (C1)Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders, scribes, and the entire (F1)(C2)Council immediately held a consultation; and they bound Jesus and led Him away, and turned Him over to Pilate.2 (C1)Pilate questioned Him: "So You are the King of the Jews?" And He answered him, "It is as you say."3 And the chief priests started accusing Him (F1)of many things.4 But Pilate questioned Him again, saying, "Do You offer nothing in answer? See how many charges they are bringing against You!"5 But Jesus (C1)said nothing further in answer, so Pilate was amazed.

6 (C1)Now at the Passover Feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested.7 And the one named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder in the revolt.8 And the crowd went up and began asking Pilate to do as he had been accustomed to do for them.9 Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?"10 For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd (C1)to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead.12 And responding again, Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?"13 They shouted (F1)back, "Crucify Him!"14 But Pilate said to them, "Why, what (F1)evil has He done?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify Him!"15 Intent on satisfying the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus (C1)flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

16 (C1)Now the soldiers took Him away into (C2)the (F1)palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they (*)called together the whole Roman (F2)(C3)cohort.17 And they (*)dressed Him in (F1)purple, and after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on Him;18 and they began saluting Him: "Hail, King of the Jews!"19 And they repeatedly beat His head with a (F1)reed and spit on Him, and kneeling, they bowed down before Him.20 And after they had mocked Him, they took the (F1)purple cloak off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they (*)led Him out to crucify Him.<
