Chapter 3
Jehoram Meets Moabite Rebellion
1 Now Jehoram the son of Ahab became king over Israel at Samaria (C1)in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned for twelve years.2 He did evil in the sight of the LORD, though not like his father and his mother; for (C1)he removed the memorial stone of Baal (C2)which his father had made.3 Nevertheless, (C1)he clung to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, into (C2)which he misled Israel; he did not abandon them.
4 Now Mesha the king of Moab was a sheep breeder, and he (C1)used to make tribute payments to the king of Israel of a hundred thousand lambs, and the wool of a hundred thousand rams.5 However, (C1)when King Ahab died, the king of Moab broke with the (F1)king of Israel.6 So King Jehoram left Samaria for battle (F1)at that time and mustered all Israel.7 Then he went and sent word to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, "The king of Moab has broken away from me. Will you go with me to fight against Moab?" And he said, "I will go up. (F1)(C1)Consider me yours, my people as your people, my horses as your horses."8 Then he said, "Which way shall we go up?" And he (F1)answered, "The way of the wilderness of Edom."
9 So (C1)the king of Israel went with (C2)the king of Judah and (C3)the king of Edom, and they made a circuit of seven days' journey. But there was no water for the army or for the cattle that (F1)followed them.10 Then the king of Israel said, "It is hopeless! For the LORD has called these three kings to hand them over to Moab!"11 But Jehoshaphat said, "(C1)Is there no prophet of the LORD here, that we may inquire of the LORD by him?" And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, "(C2)Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, (C3)who used to pour water on the hands of Elijah."12 And Jehoshaphat said, "The word of the LORD is with him." So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13 Now Elisha said to the king of Israel, "(F1)What business do you have with me? (C1)Go to your father's prophets and your mother's prophets." But the king of Israel said to him, "No, for the LORD has called these three kings together to hand them over to Moab."14 Elisha said, "(C1)As surely as the LORD of armies lives, before whom I stand, if I did not respect Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look at you nor see you.15 "But now (C1)bring me a (F1)musician." And it came about, when the (F1)musician played, that (C2)the hand of the LORD came upon him.16 And he said, "This is what the LORD says: 'Make this valley (F1)full of trenches.'17 "For the LORD says this: 'You will not see wind, nor will you see rain; yet that valley (C1)shall be filled with water, so that you will drink, you, your livestock, and your other animals.18 'And this is an (C1)insignificant thing in the sight of the LORD; He will also give the Moabites into your hand.19 '(C1)Then you shall strike every fortified city and every choice city, and (F1)cut down every good tree and stop up all the springs of water, and spoil every good plot of land with stones.'"20 And it happened in the morning (C1)about the time of offering the sacrifice, that behold, water came from the direction of Edom, and the country was filled with water.
21 Now all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them. And all who were able to (F1)put on armor and older were summoned and they took their positions on the border.22 Then they got up early in the morning, and the sun shone on the water, and the Moabites saw the water opposite them as red as blood.23 So they said, "This is blood; the kings must have fought each other, and they have killed one another. Now then, Moab, to the spoils!"24 But when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and struck the Moabites, so that they fled from them; and the Israelites invaded (F1)the land, (F2)killing the Moabites.25 (C1)So they destroyed the cities; and each one threw a stone on every plot of good land and filled it. So they stopped up every spring of water and (F1)cut down every good tree, until in (C2)Kir-hareseth only they left its stones; however, the rock slingers surrounded it and struck it.26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle was too fierce for him, he took with him seven hundred men who drew swords, to break through to the king of Edom; but they could not.27 Then the king of Moab took his oldest son who was to reign in his place, and (C1)offered him as a burnt offering on the wall. And great anger came upon Israel, and they departed from him and returned to their own land.

Chapter 8
Basket of Fruit and Israel's Captivity
1 This is what the Lord (F1)GOD showed me, and behold, there was a basket of summer fruit.2 And He said, "What do you see, Amos?" And (C1)I said, "A basket of summer fruit." Then the LORD said to me, "The (C2)end has come for My people Israel. I will not (F1)(C3)spare them any longer.3 "(F1)The (C1)songs of the palace will turn to (C2)wailing on that day," declares the Lord GOD. "The (C3)corpses will be many; in every place (F2)they will throw them out. (F3)Hush!"
4 Hear this, you who (F1)(C1)trample the needy, to put an end to the humble of the land,5 saying, "When will the (C1)new moon (F1)be over,
So that we may sell grain;
And the (C2)Sabbath, so that we may open the wheat market,
To make the (F2)ephah smaller and the (F3)shekel bigger,
And to (C3)cheat with dishonest scales,
6 So as to (C1)buy the helpless for (F1)money,
And the needy for a pair of sandals,
And that we may sell the refuse of the wheat?"
7 The LORD has (C1)sworn by the (C2)pride of Jacob,
"Indeed, I will (C3)never forget any of their deeds.
8 "Because of this will the land not (C1)quake,
And everyone who lives in it (C2)mourn?
Indeed, all of it will (C3)rise up like the Nile,
And it will be tossed about
And subside like the Nile of Egypt.
9 "And it will come about on that day," declares the Lord GOD,
"That I will make the (C1)sun go down at noon,
And (C2)make the earth dark in (F1)broad daylight.
10 "Then I will (C1)turn your festivals into mourning,
And all your songs into songs of mourning;
And I will put (C2)sackcloth around everyone's waist,
And (F1)baldness on every head.
And I will make it (C3)like a time of mourning for an only son,
And the end of it will be like a bitter day.
11 "Behold, days are coming," declares the Lord GOD,
"When I will send a famine on the land,
Not a famine of bread or a thirst for water,
But rather (C1)for hearing the words of the LORD.
12 "People will stagger from sea to sea
And from the north even to the east;
They will roam about to (C1)seek the word of the LORD,
But they will not find it.
13 "On that day the beautiful (C1)virgins
And the young men will (C2)faint from thirst.
14 "As for those who swear by the (F1)(C1)guilt of Samaria,
And say, 'As your god lives, (C2)Dan,'
And, 'As the way of (C3)Beersheba lives,'
They will fall and (C4)not rise again."
1 Corinthians 10
Chapter 10
Avoid Israel's Mistakes
1 For (C1)I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our fathers were all (C2)under the cloud and they all (C3)passed through the sea;2 and they all were (C1)baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;3 and they all (C1)ate the same spiritual food,4 and all (C1)drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was (F1)Christ.5 Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased; for their dead bodies were (C1)spread out in the wilderness.
6 Now these things happened as (C1)examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as (C2)they indeed craved them.7 Do not be (C1)idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: "(C2)THE PEOPLE SAT DOWN TO EAT AND TO DRINK, AND ROSE UP TO (C3)PLAY."8 Nor are we to commit sexual immorality, as (C1)some of them (F1)did, and (C2)twenty-three thousand fell in one day.9 Nor are we to put the Lord to the test, as (C1)some of them (F1)did, and were killed by the snakes.10 Nor (C1)grumble, as some of them (F1)did, and (C2)were killed by the (C3)destroyer.11 Now these things happened to them as an (C1)example, and (C2)they were written for our instruction, upon whom (C3)the ends of the ages have come.12 Therefore let the one who (C1)thinks he stands watch out that he does not fall.13 No temptation has overtaken you except something common to mankind; and (C1)God is faithful, (F1)so He will not allow you to be (C2)tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
14 Therefore, my (C1)beloved, flee from (C2)idolatry.15 I speak as to wise people; you then, judge what I say.16 Is the (C1)cup of blessing which we bless not a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is the (C2)bread which we break not a sharing in the body of Christ?17 Since there is one loaf, we (C1)who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf.18 Look at (F1)the people of (C1)Israel; are those who (C2)eat the sacrifices not partners in the altar?19 What do I mean then? That food sacrificed to idols is anything, or (C1)that an idol is (F1)anything?20 No, but I say that things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they (C1)sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become partners with demons.21 (C1)You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and (C2)the table of demons.22 Or do we (C1)provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not (C2)stronger than He, are we?
23 (C1)All things are permitted, but not all things are of benefit. All things are permitted, but not all things (F1)(C2)build people up.24 No one is to (C1)seek his own advantage, but rather that of his (F1)neighbor.25 (C1)Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions, for the sake of conscience;26 (C1)FOR THE EARTH IS THE LORD'S, AND (F1)ALL IT CONTAINS.27 If (C1)one of the unbelievers invites you and you want to go, (C2)eat anything that is set before you without asking questions, for the sake of conscience.28 But (C1)if anyone says to you, "This is meat sacrificed to idols," do not eat it, for the sake of that one who informed you and for the sake of conscience.29 Now by "conscience" I do not mean your own, but the other person's; for (C1)why is my freedom judged by another's conscience?30 If I partake with thankfulness, (C1)why am I slandered about that for which I (C2)give thanks?
31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or (C1)whatever you do, do all things for the glory of God.32 (C1)Do not offend Jews or Greeks, or (C2)the church of God;33 just as I also (C1)please everyone in all things, (C2)not seeking my own benefit but the benefit of the many, (C3)so that they may be saved.
