2 Kings 8
Chapter 8
Jehoram Restores the Shunammite's Land
1 Now (C1)Elisha spoke to the woman whose son he had restored to life, saying, "Arise and go (F1)with your household, and live wherever you can live; for the (C2)LORD has called for a famine, and (C3)it will indeed come on the land for seven years."2 So the woman arose and acted in accordance with the word of the man of God: she went with her household and resided in the land of the Philistines for seven years.3 Then at the end of seven years, the woman returned from the land of the Philistines; and she went to (F1)appeal to the king for her house and for her field.4 Now the king was speaking with (C1)Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, saying, "Please report to me all the great things that Elisha has done."5 And as he was reporting to the king (C1)how he had restored to life the one who was dead, behold, the woman whose son he had restored to life (F1)appealed to the king for her house and for her field. And Gehazi said, "My lord the king, this is the woman and this is her son, whom Elisha restored to life."6 When the king asked the woman, she told everything to him. So the king appointed an officer for her, saying, "Restore all that was hers and all the produce of the field from the day that she left the land even until now."
Elisha Predicts Evil from Hazael
7 Then Elisha came to (C1)Damascus. Now (C2)Ben-hadad, the king of Aram, was sick, and it was told to him, saying, "(C3)The man of God has come here."8 And the king said to (C1)Hazael, "(C2)Take a gift in your hand and go to meet the man of God, and (C3)inquire of the LORD by him, saying, 'Will I recover from this sickness?'"9 So Hazael went to meet him and took a gift in his hand, even every kind of good thing of Damascus, forty camels' loads; and he came and stood before him and said, "(C1)Your son Ben-hadad king of Aram has sent me to you, saying, 'Will I recover from this sickness?'"10 Then Elisha said to him, "(C1)Go, say to him, 'You will certainly recover'; but the (C2)LORD has shown me that he will certainly die."11 And he (F1)stared steadily at him (C1)until Hazael was embarrassed, and then (C2)the man of God wept.12 And Hazael said, "Why is my lord weeping?" And he (F1)answered, "Because (C1)I know the evil that you will do to the sons of Israel: you will set their fortified cities on fire, you will kill their young men with the sword, their little ones you (C2)will smash to pieces, and you will rip up their pregnant women."13 Then Hazael said, "But what is your servant—(C1)a lowly dog—that he could do this great thing?" And Elisha (F1)answered, "(C2)The LORD has shown me that you will be king over Aram."14 So he left Elisha and came to his master, who said to him, "What did Elisha say to you?" And he (F1)answered, "He told me that (C1)you would certainly recover."15 But on the following day, he took the (F1)cover and dipped it in water, and spread it over his face, (C1)so that he died. And Hazael became king in his place.
Another Jehoram Reigns in Judah
16 Now in the fifth year of (C1)Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel, when Jehoshaphat was the king of Judah, Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah became king.17 He was (C1)thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned for eight years in Jerusalem.18 He walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for (C1)Ahab's daughter was his wife; and he did evil in the sight of the LORD.19 However, the LORD did not want to destroy Judah, for the sake of David His servant, (C1)since He had (F1)promised him to give him a (F2)lamp through his sons always.
20 In his days (C1)Edom broke away from the (F1)rule of Judah, and appointed a king over themselves.21 Then Joram crossed over to Zair, and all his chariots with him. And he got up at night and struck the Edomites who had surrounded him and the captains of the chariots; (C1)but (F1)his army fled to their tents.22 (C1)So Edom has broken away from (F1)Judah to this day. Then (C2)Libnah broke away at the same time.23 Now the rest of the acts of Joram and everything that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?
Ahaziah Succeeds Jehoram in Judah
24 So Joram (F1)lay down with his fathers and (C1)was buried with his fathers in the city of David; and his son (C2)Ahaziah became king in his place.25 (C1)In the twelfth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign.26 (C1)Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned for one year in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Athaliah the granddaughter of Omri king of Israel.27 (C1)He walked in the way of the house of Ahab and did evil in the sight of the LORD, like the house of Ahab, because he was a son-in-law of the house of Ahab.
28 Then he went with Joram the son of Ahab to war against (C1)Hazael king of Aram at (C2)Ramoth-gilead, and the Arameans (F1)wounded Joram.29 So (C1)King Joram returned to have himself healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Arameans had (F1)inflicted on him at (C2)Ramah when he fought against Hazael king of Aram. Then (C3)Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel because he was sick.
Jonah 3
Chapter 3
Nineveh Repents
1 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,2 "Arise, go to (C1)Nineveh, the great city, and (C2)proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you."3 So Jonah got up and went to Nineveh according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was (F1)an (C1)exceedingly large city, a three days' walk.4 Then Jonah began to go through the city one day's walk; and he (C1)cried out and said, "Forty more days, and Nineveh will be overthrown."
5 Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a (C1)fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.6 When the word reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, removed his robe from himself, (C1)covered himself with sackcloth, and sat on the (F1)dust.7 And he issued a (C1)proclamation, and it said, "In Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles: No person, animal, herd, or flock is to taste anything. They are not to eat, or drink water.8 "But every person and animal must be covered with sackcloth; and people are to (C1)call on God vehemently, and they are to (C2)turn, each one from his evil way, and from the violence which is in their hands.9 "(C1)Who knows, God may turn and relent, and turn from His burning anger so that we will not perish."
10 When God saw their deeds, that they (C1)turned from their evil way, then (C2)God relented of the disaster which He had declared He would (F1)bring on them. So He did not do it.
1 Corinthians 14:1-25
Chapter 14
Prophecy a Superior Gift
1 (C1)Pursue love, yet earnestly (C2)desire (C3)spiritual gifts, but especially that you may (C4)prophesy.2 For the one who (C1)speaks in a tongue does not speak to people, but to God; for no one (F1)understands, but (F2)in his spirit he speaks (C2)mysteries.3 But the one who prophesies speaks to people for (C1)edification, (F1)(C2)exhortation, and consolation.4 The one who (C1)speaks in a tongue (C2)edifies himself; but the one who (C3)prophesies (C2)edifies the church.5 Now I wish that you all (C1)spoke in tongues, but (C2)rather that you would prophesy; and greater is the one who prophesies than the one who (C1)speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive (C3)edification.
6 But now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I speak to you either by way of (C1)revelation, or of (C2)knowledge, or of (C3)prophecy, or of (C4)teaching?7 Yet even lifeless instruments, whether flute or harp, in producing a sound, if they do not produce a distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp?8 For if (C1)the trumpet produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle?9 So you too, unless you produce intelligible speech by the tongue, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will just be (C1)talking to the air.10 There are, perhaps, a great many kinds of (F1)languages in the world, and none is incapable of meaning.11 So if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be (C1)unintelligible to the one who speaks, and the one who speaks will be unintelligible (F1)to me.12 So you too, since you are eager to possess (F1)spiritual gifts, strive to excel for the (C1)edification of the church.
13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue is to pray that he may interpret.14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unproductive.15 (C1)What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit, but I will pray with the mind also; I will (C2)sing with the spirit, but I will sing with the mind also.16 For otherwise, if you bless God (F1)in the spirit only, how will the one who occupies the place of the (F2)outsider know to say (C1)the "Amen" at your (C2)giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you are saying?17 For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not (C1)edified.18 I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all;19 nevertheless, in church I prefer to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.
Instruction for the Church
20 (C1)Brothers and sisters, (C2)do not be children in your thinking; yet in evil (C3)be infants, but in your thinking be mature.21 In (C1)the (F1)Law it is written: "(C2)BY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES AND BY THE LIPS OF STRANGERS I WILL SPEAK TO THIS PEOPLE, AND EVEN SO THEY WILL NOT LISTEN TO ME," says the Lord.22 So then, tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but (C1)prophecy is not for unbelievers, but for those who believe.23 Therefore if the whole church gathers together and all the people speak in tongues, and (F1)outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that (C1)you are insane?24 But if all (C1)prophesy, and an unbeliever or an (F1)outsider enters, he is (C2)convicted by all, he is called to account by all;25 (C1)the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will (C2)fall on his face and worship God, (C3)declaring that God is certainly among you.<
