Chapter 12
David's Supporters in Ziklag
1 (C1)Now these are the men who came to David at Ziklag, while he was still restricted because of Saul the son of Kish; and they were among the mighty men who helped him in war.2 They were equipped with bows, (C1)using both the right hand and the left to sling stones and shoot arrows with the bow; (C2)they were Saul's kinsmen from Benjamin.3 The chief was Ahiezer, then Joash, the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; and Jeziel and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth, and Beracah, and Jehu the Anathothite,4 and Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty man among the thirty, and in charge of the thirty. (F1)Then Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, Jozabad the Gederathite,5 (F1)Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah, Shephatiah the Haruphite,6 Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer, Jashobeam, the Korahites,7 and Joelah and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham of Gedor.
8 From the Gadites valiant mighty men went over to David at the stronghold in the wilderness, men trained for war who could handle a large shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and (C1)they were as swift as the gazelles on the mountains.9 Ezer was the first, Obadiah the second, Eliab the third,10 Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth,11 Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh,12 Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth,13 Jeremiah the tenth, and Machbannai, the eleventh.14 These men from the sons of Gad were (F1)captains of the army; (C1)the one who was least was equal to a hundred, and the greatest, to a thousand.15 (C1)These are the ones who crossed the Jordan in the first month, when it was overflowing all its banks, and they put to flight all those in the valleys, to the east and to the west.
16 Then some of the sons of Benjamin and Judah came to the stronghold to David.17 David went out to meet them, and said to them, "If you come peacefully to help me, my heart shall be united with you; but if to betray me to my enemies, since there is no (F1)wrong in my hands, may the God of our fathers look on it and decide."18 Then (C1)the Spirit (F1)covered (C2)Amasai like clothing, the chief of the thirty; and he said, "We are yours, David,
And are with you, son of Jesse!
(C3)Peace, peace to you,
And peace to him who helps you;
Indeed, your God helps you!"
Then David received them and made them (F2)captains of the troops.
19 (C1)From Manasseh some also defected to David when he was about to go to battle with the Philistines against Saul. But they did not help them, because the governors of the Philistines sent him away after consultation, saying, "At the cost of our heads he might defect to his master Saul."20 As he was going to Ziklag, men from Manasseh defected to him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, (F1)captains of thousands who belonged to Manasseh.21 They helped David against (C1)the band of raiders, for they were all valiant mighty men, and were captains in the army.22 For day by day men came to David to help him, until there was a great army (C1)like the army of God.
Supporters Gathered at Hebron
23 Now these are the numbers of the (F1)divisions equipped for war, (C1)who came to David at Hebron, (C2)to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, (C3)according to the (F2)word of the LORD.24 The sons of Judah who carried shield and spear numbered 6,800, equipped for war.25 From the sons of Simeon, valiant mighty men of war, 7,100.26 From the sons of Levi, 4,600.27 Now Jehoiada was the leader of the house of Aaron, and with him were 3,700,28 also (C1)Zadok, a young valiant mighty man, and from his father's house, twenty-two captains.29 From the sons of Benjamin, (C1)Saul's kinsmen, three thousand; for until now (C2)the majority of them had kept their allegiance to the house of Saul.30 From the sons of Ephraim 20,800, valiant mighty men, famous men in their fathers' households.31 From the half-tribe of Manasseh eighteen thousand, who were designated by name to come and make David king.32 From the sons of Issachar, (C1)men who understood the times, with knowledge of what Israel should do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their kinsmen were at their command.33 From Zebulun, there were fifty thousand who went out in the army, who could draw up in battle formation with all kinds of weapons of war and helped David (F1)with (C1)an undivided heart.34 From Naphtali there were a thousand captains, and with them thirty-seven thousand with shield and spear.35 From the Danites who could draw up in battle formation, there were 28,600.36 From Asher there were forty thousand who went out in the army to draw up in battle formation.37 From the other side of the Jordan, from the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, there were 120,000 with all kinds of weapons of war for the battle.
38 All of these, being men of war who helped in battle formation, came to Hebron with (C1)a perfect heart to make David king over all Israel; and all the rest of Israel also were of one mind to make David king.39 They were there with David for three days, eating and drinking, for their kinsmen had prepared for them.40 Moreover, those who were near to them, as far as Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali, (C1)brought food on donkeys, camels, mules, and on oxen, great quantities of flour cakes, fig cakes and bunches of raisins, wine, oil, oxen, and sheep. There was joy indeed in Israel.

Chapter 2
God's Favor to Zion
1 (F1)Then I raised my eyes and looked, and behold, there was a man with a (C1)measuring line in his hand.2 So I said, "Where are you going?" And he said to me, "To (C1)measure Jerusalem, to see how wide it is and how long it is."3 And behold, the (C1)angel who had been speaking with me was going out, and another angel was going out to meet him.4 And he said to him, "Run, speak to that (C1)young man there, saying, '(C2)Jerusalem will be inhabited (C3)as open country because of the (C4)multitude of people and cattle within it.5 'But I,' declares the LORD, 'will be a (C1)wall of fire to her on all sides, and I will be the (C2)glory in her midst.'"
6 "(F1)You there! (C1)Flee from the land of the north," declares the LORD, "because I have (C2)spread you out like the four winds of the heavens," declares the LORD.7 "(F1)You, Zion! (C1)Escape, you who are living with the daughter of Babylon."8 For the LORD of armies says this: "After (C1)glory He has sent me against the nations that plunder you, for the one who touches you, touches the (F1)(C2)apple of His eye.9 "For behold, I am going to (C1)wave My hand over them so that they will be (C2)plunder for their slaves. Then you will know that the LORD of armies has sent Me.10 "(C1)Shout for joy and rejoice, daughter of Zion; for behold I am coming and I will (C2)dwell in your midst," declares the LORD.11 "And (C1)many nations will join themselves to the LORD on that day and will become My people. Then I will (C2)dwell in your midst, and you will (C3)know that the LORD of armies has sent Me to you.12 "And the LORD will (F1)(C1)possess Judah as His portion in the holy land, and will again (C2)choose Jerusalem.
13 "(F1)(C1)Be silent, all (F2)mankind, before the LORD; for He has (C2)roused Himself from His holy dwelling."

Chapter 3
The New Birth
1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named (C1)Nicodemus, a (C2)ruler of the Jews;2 this man came to (F1)Jesus at night and said to Him, "(C1)Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these (F2)(C2)signs that You do unless (C3)God is with him."3 Jesus responded and said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone (C1)is born (F1)again he cannot see (C2)the kingdom of God."
4 Nicodemus (*)said to Him, "How can a person be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother's womb a second time and be born, can he?"5 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born of (C1)water and the Spirit, he cannot enter (C2)the kingdom of God.6 "(C1)That which has been born of the flesh is flesh, and that which has been born of the Spirit is spirit.7 "Do not be amazed that I said to you, 'You must be born (F1)again.'8 "(C1)The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it is coming from and where it is going; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit."
9 Nicodemus responded and said to Him, "How can these things be?"10 Jesus answered and said to him, "You are (C1)the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?11 "Truly, truly, I say to you, (C1)we speak of what we know and (C2)testify of what we have seen, and (C2)you people do not accept our testimony.12 "If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?13 "(C1)No one has ascended into heaven, except (C2)He who descended from heaven: (C3)the Son of Man.14 "And just as (C1)Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must (C2)the Son of Man (C3)be lifted up,15 so that everyone who (F1)believes will (C1)have eternal life in Him.
16 "For God so (C1)loved the world, that He (C2)gave His (C3)only Son, so that everyone who (C4)believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.17 "For God (C1)did not send the Son into the world (C2)to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him.18 "(C1)The one who believes in Him is not judged; the one who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of (C2)the only Son of God.19 "And this is the judgment, that (C1)the Light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the Light; for (C2)their deeds were evil.20 "(C1)For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light, so that his deeds will not be exposed.21 "But the one who (C1)practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds will be revealed (F1)as having been performed in God."<
