Chapter 18
David's Kingdom Strengthened
1 Now after this (C1)it came about that David (F1)defeated the Philistines and subdued them and took Gath and its towns from the hand of the Philistines.2 And he defeated Moab, and the Moabites became servants to David, bringing tribute.
3 David also defeated Hadadezer king of Zobah as far as Hamath, as he went to establish his (F1)rule to the river Euphrates.4 David took from him a thousand chariots and seven thousand horsemen and twenty thousand foot soldiers, and David hamstrung almost all the chariot horses, but left enough of them for a hundred chariots.
5 When the Arameans of (F1)Damascus came to help Hadadezer king (C1)of Zobah, David (F2)killed twenty-two thousand men of the Arameans.6 Then David put garrisons among the Arameans of (F1)Damascus; and the Arameans became servants to David, bringing tribute. And the LORD helped David wherever he went.7 And David took the shields of gold which were (F1)carried by the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.8 Also from (F1)Tibhath and Cun, cities of Hadadezer, David took a very large amount of bronze, with which (C1)Solomon made the bronze (F2)Sea and the pillars and the bronze utensils.
9 Now when (F1)Tou king of Hamath heard that David had (F2)defeated all the army of Hadadezer king of Zobah,10 he sent (F1)Hadoram his son to King David to (F2)greet him and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and had (F3)defeated him; for Hadadezer had been at war with Tou. And Hadoram brought all kinds of articles of gold and silver and bronze.11 King David also dedicated these to the LORD, with the silver and the gold which he had carried away from all the nations: from Edom, Moab, the sons of Ammon, the Philistines, and from Amalek.
12 Moreover, Abishai the son of Zeruiah (F1)defeated eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.13 Then he put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became servants to David. And the LORD helped David wherever he went.
14 So David reigned over all Israel; and he (F1)administered justice and righteousness for all his people.15 (C1)Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was secretary;16 and Zadok the son of Ahitub and Abimelech the son of Abiathar were priests, and Shavsha was secretary;17 and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and the sons of David were chiefs at the king's side.
Chapter 19
David's Messengers Abused
1 (C1)Now it came about after this, that Nahash the king of the sons of Ammon died, and his son became king in his place.2 Then David said, "I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me." So David sent messengers to console him concerning his father. And David's servants came into the land of the sons of Ammon to Hanun to console him.3 But the commanders among the sons of Ammon said to Hanun, "(F1)Do you think that David is honoring your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Have his servants not come to you to search, to demolish, and to spy out the land?"4 So Hanun took David's servants and shaved them, and cut off their robes in the middle as far as their buttocks, and sent them away.5 Then certain people went and told David about the men. And he sent messengers to meet them, because the men were very humiliated. And the king said, "Stay at Jericho until your beards grow back, then return."
6 When the sons of Ammon saw that they had made themselves repulsive to David, Hanun and the sons of Ammon sent (F1)a thousand talents of silver to hire for themselves chariots and horsemen from Mesopotamia, Aram-maacah, and (C1)Zobah.7 So they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maacah and his people, who came and camped opposite (C1)Medeba. And the sons of Ammon gathered together from their cities and came to the battle.8 When David heard about it, he sent Joab and all the army, the mighty men.9 The sons of Ammon came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance of the city; and the kings who had come were by themselves in the field.
Ammon and Aram Defeated
10 Now when Joab saw that the (F1)battle was set against him at the front and at the rear, he selected warriors from all the choice men in Israel and lined them up against the Arameans.11 But the remainder of the people he placed (F1)under the command of (F2)Abshai his brother; and they lined up against the sons of Ammon.12 He said, "If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the sons of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will help you.13 "Be strong, and let's show ourselves courageous for the benefit of our people and the cities of our God; and may the LORD do what is good in His sight."14 So Joab and the people who were with him advanced to battle against the Arameans, and they fled from him.15 When the sons of Ammon saw that the Arameans had fled, they also fled from his brother Abshai and entered the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.
16 When the Arameans saw that they had been (F1)defeated by Israel, they sent messengers and brought out the Arameans who were beyond the Euphrates River, with Shophach the commander of the army of Hadadezer (F2)leading them.17 When it was reported to David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan, and came upon them and drew up in formation against them. And when David drew up in battle formation against the Arameans, they fought against him.18 And the Arameans fled from Israel, and David killed of the Arameans seven thousand charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers; and he put Shophach the commander of the army to death.19 So when the servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been (F1)defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and served him. So the Arameans were not willing to help the sons of Ammon anymore.
Zechariah 7
Chapter 7
1 In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the LORD came to Zechariah on the fourth day of the ninth month, which is (C1)Chislev.2 Now the town of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regemmelech and (F1)their men to (F2)(C1)seek the favor of the LORD,3 speaking to the (C1)priests who belong to the house of the LORD of armies, and to the prophets, saying, "Shall I weep in the (C2)fifth month (F1)and fast, as I have done these many years?"4 Then the word of the LORD of armies came to me, saying,5 "Say to all the people of the land and to the priests, 'When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months (F1)these (C1)seventy years, was it actually for (C2)Me that you fasted?6 'And when you eat and drink, (F1)do you not eat for yourselves and drink for yourselves?7 'Are these not the words which the LORD (C1)proclaimed by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and (C2)carefree along with its cities around it, and the (F1)(C3)Negev and the (F2)foothills were inhabited?'"
8 Then the word of the LORD came to Zechariah, saying,9 "This is what the LORD of armies has said: '(C1)Dispense true justice and practice (C2)kindness and compassion each to his brother;10 and (C1)do not oppress the widow or the (F1)orphan, the stranger or the poor; and do (C2)not devise evil in your hearts against one another.'11 "But they (C1)refused to pay attention, and (F1)(C2)turned a stubborn shoulder and (F2)(C3)plugged their ears from hearing.12 "They also made their (C1)hearts as hard as (C2)a diamond (F1)so that they could not hear the Law and the (C3)words which the LORD of armies had sent by His Spirit through the (C4)former prophets; therefore great (C5)wrath came from the LORD of armies.13 "And just as (C1)He called and they would not listen, so (C2)they called and I would not listen," says the LORD of armies;14 "but I (F1)(C1)scattered them with a (C2)storm wind among all the nations whom they did not know. So the land was (C3)desolated behind them (F2)so that (C4)no one went back and forth, since they (C5)made the pleasant land desolate."
John 5:1-18
Chapter 5
The Healing at Bethesda
1 After these things there was (C1)a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Now in Jerusalem, by (C1)the Sheep Gate, there is a pool which (C2)in (F1)Hebrew is called (F2)Bethesda, having five (F3)porticoes.3 In these porticoes lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, limping, or (F1)paralyzed.(F2)5 Now a man was there who had been (F1)ill for thirty-eight years.6 Jesus, upon seeing this man lying there and knowing that he had already been in that condition for a long time, (*)said to him, "Do you want to get well?"7 The sick man answered Him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me."8 Jesus (*)said to him, "(C1)Get up, pick up your pallet and walk."
9 Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk.
Jesus' Equality with God
18 For this reason therefore (C1)the Jews (C2)were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, (C3)making Himself equal with God.<Copyright © 1960, 1962, 1963, 1968, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1995,2020 by The Lockman Foundation
