Chapter 27
Jotham Succeeds Uzziah in Judah
1 (C1)Jotham was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned for sixteen years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jerushah the daughter of Zadok.2 He did what was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Uzziah had done; (C1)however he did not enter the temple of the LORD. But the people continued acting corruptly.3 He built the upper gate of the house of the LORD, and he built the wall of (C1)Ophel extensively.4 Moreover, he built (C1)cities in the hill country of Judah, and he built fortresses and towers on the wooded hills.5 He fought with the king of the Ammonites and prevailed over them so that during that year the Ammonites gave him (F1)a hundred talents of silver, (F2)ten thousand kors of wheat, and ten thousand of barley. The Ammonites also paid him this amount in the second year and in the third.6 (C1)So Jotham became powerful because he directed his ways before the LORD his God.7 (C1)Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, all his wars and his ways, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah.8 He was (C1)twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for sixteen years.9 And Jotham (F1)lay down with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David; and his son Ahaz became king in his place.
Chapter 28
Ahaz Succeeds Jotham in Judah
1 (C1)Ahaz was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for sixteen years. (C2)He did not do what was right in the sight of the LORD as his father David had done.2 (C1)But he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel; he also (C2)made cast metal images for the Baals.3 Furthermore, (C1)he burned incense in the Valley of Ben-hinnom, and (C2)burned his sons in fire, (C3)according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD had driven out from the sons of Israel.4 He sacrificed and (C1)burned incense on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.
Judah Is Invaded
5 Therefore (C1)the LORD his God handed him over to the king of Aram; and they (F1)defeated him and carried from him a great number of captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also handed over to the king of Israel, who struck him with heavy casualties.6 For (C1)Pekah the son of Remaliah killed 120,000 in Judah in one day, all valiant men, because they had abandoned the LORD God of their fathers.7 And Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, killed Maaseiah the king's son, Azrikam the ruler of the house, and Elkanah the second to the king.
8 (C1)The sons of Israel led away captive two hundred thousand of (C2)their relatives, women, sons, and daughters; and they also (F1)took a great deal of spoils from them, and brought the spoils to Samaria.9 But a prophet of the LORD was there, whose name was Oded; and (C1)he went out to meet the army which came to Samaria and said to them, "Behold, because the LORD, the God of your fathers, (C2)was angry with Judah, He has handed them over to you, and you have killed them in a rage (C3)which has even reached heaven.10 "Now you are proposing to (C1)subjugate the people of Judah and Jerusalem as male and female slaves for yourselves. Are you not, however guilty yourselves of offenses against the LORD your God?11 "Now then, listen to me and return the captives (C1)whom you captured from your brothers, (C2)for the burning anger of the LORD is against you."12 Then some of the leading men of the sons of Ephraim—Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai—rose up against those who were coming from the battle,13 and said to them, "You must not bring the captives in here, for you are proposing to bring guilt upon us before the LORD, adding to our sins and our guilt; for our guilt is great, and His burning anger is against Israel."14 So the armed men left the captives and the spoils before the officers and all the assembly.15 Then (C1)the men who were designated by name got up, took the captives, and they clothed all their naked people from the spoils; they gave them clothes and sandals, fed them and (C2)gave them drink, anointed them with oil, led all their feeble ones on donkeys, and brought them to Jericho, (C3)the city of palm trees, to their brothers; then they returned to Samaria.
Compromise with Assyria
16 (C1)At that time King Ahaz sent word to the (F1)kings of Assyria for help.17 (C1)For the Edomites had come again and attacked Judah, and led away captives.18 (C1)The Philistines had also invaded the cities of the (F1)lowland and of the Negev of Judah, and had taken Beth-shemesh, Aijalon, Gederoth, and Soco with its villages, Timnah with its villages, and Gimzo with its villages; and they had settled there.19 For the LORD had humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of (C1)Israel, for he had brought about a lack of restraint in Judah and was very unfaithful to the LORD.20 So (C1)Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria came against him and afflicted him instead of strengthening him.21 (C1)Although Ahaz took a portion out of the house of the LORD and out of the palace of the king and of the princes, and gave it to the king of Assyria, it did not help him.
22 Now during the time of his distress, this same King Ahaz (C1)became even more unfaithful to the LORD.23 (C1)For he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus who had (F1)defeated him, and said, "(C2)Because the gods of the kings of Aram helped them, I will sacrifice to them so that they may help me." But they became the (F2)downfall of him and all Israel.24 Moreover, when Ahaz gathered together the utensils of the house of God, he (C1)cut the utensils of the house of God in pieces; and he (C2)closed the doors of the house of the LORD, and (C3)made altars for himself in every corner of Jerusalem.25 In every city of Judah he made high places to burn incense to other gods, and provoked the LORD, the God of his fathers, to anger.26 (C1)Now the rest of his acts and all his ways, from the first to the last, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.27 (C1)So Ahaz (F1)lay down with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, in Jerusalem, for they did not bring him to the tombs of the kings of (C2)Israel; and his son Hezekiah reigned in his place.
Psalms 84
Chapter 84
Longing for the Temple Worship.
1 How lovely are Your (C1)dwelling places,
LORD of armies!
2 My (C1)soul longed and even yearned for the courtyards of the LORD;
My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the (C2)living God.
3 The bird also has found a house,
And the swallow a nest for herself, where she may put her young:
Your (C1)altars, LORD of armies,
(C2)My King and my God.
4 (C1)Blessed are those who dwell in Your house!
They are (C2)ever praising You. Selah
5 Blessed is the person whose (C1)strength is in You,
In (F1)whose heart are the (C2)roads to Zion!
6 Passing through the Valley of (F1)Baca they make it a (F2)spring;
The (C1)early rain also covers it with blessings.
7 They (C1)go from strength to strength,
(F1)Every one of them (C2)appears before God in Zion.
8 (C1)LORD God of armies, hear my prayer;
Listen, (C2)God of Jacob! Selah
9 See our (C1)shield, God,
And look at the face of (C2)Your anointed.
10 For (C1)a day in Your courtyards is better than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God
Than live in the tents of wickedness.
11 For the LORD God is (C1)a sun and (C2)shield;
The LORD gives grace and (C3)glory;
(C4)He withholds no good thing (F1)from those who walk with integrity.
12 LORD of armies,
(C1)Blessed is the person who trusts in You!
John 18:19-38
Chapter 18
19 (C1)The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching.20 Jesus answered him, "I (C1)have spoken openly to the world; I always (C2)taught in (F1)synagogues and (C3)in the temple area, where all the Jews congregate; and I said nothing in secret.21 "Why are you asking Me? Ask those who have heard what I spoke to them. Look: these people know what I said."22 But when He said this, one of the (C1)officers, who was standing nearby, (C2)struck Jesus, saying, "Is that the way You answer the high priest?"23 (C1)Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?"24 (C1)So Annas sent Him bound to (C1)Caiaphas the high priest.Peter's Denial of Jesus
25 (C1)Now (C2)Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself. So they said to him, "(C3)You are not one of His disciples as well, are you?" He denied it, and said, "I am not."26 One of the slaves of the high priest, who was related to the one (C1)whose ear Peter cut off, (*)said, "Did I not see you in (C2)the garden with Him?"27 Peter then denied it again, and immediately (C1)a rooster crowed.
Jesus before Pilate
28 (C1)Then they (*)brought Jesus from (C2)Caiaphas into (C3)the (F1)Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter (C3)the (F1)Praetorium, so that (C4)they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.29 (C1)Therefore Pilate came out to them and (*)said, "What accusation are you bringing against this Man?"30 They answered and said to him, "If this Man were not (F1)a criminal, we would not have handed Him over to you."31 So Pilate said to them, "Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law." The Jews said to him, "We are not (F1)permitted to put anyone to death."32 This happened so that (C1)the word of Jesus which He said, indicating what kind of death He was going to die, would be fulfilled.
33 Therefore Pilate (C1)entered the Praetorium again, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, "(C2)You are the King of the Jews?"34 Jesus answered, "Are you saying this (F1)on your own, or did others tell you about Me?"35 Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed You over to me; what have You done?"36 Jesus answered, "(C1)My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not (F1)of this realm."37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "(C1)You say correctly that I am a king. For this purpose I have been born, and for this I have come into the world: (C2)to testify to the truth. (C3)Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice."
38 Pilate (*)said to Him, "What is truth?"
