Isaiah 17-19

Chapter 17

Prophecy about Damascus

1 The (C1)pronouncement concerning (C2)Damascus:

"Behold, Damascus is about to be (C3)removed from being a city
And will become a (C4)fallen ruin.

2 "The cities (F1)of (C1)Aroer are abandoned;
They will be for (C2)herds (F2)to lie down in,
And there will be (C3)no one to frighten them.

3 "The (F1)(C1)fortified city will disappear from Ephraim,
And (F2)sovereignty from Damascus
And the remnant of Aram;
They will be like the (C2)glory of the sons of Israel,"
Declares the LORD of armies.

4 Now on that day the (C1)glory of Jacob will (F1)fade,
And (C2)the fatness of his flesh will become lean.

5 It will be (C1)like the (F1)reaper gathering the standing grain,
As his arm harvests the ears,
Or it will be like one gleaning ears of grain
In the (C2)Valley of Rephaim.

6 Yet (C1)gleanings will be left in it like the (F1)shaking of an olive tree,
Two or three olives on the topmost branch,
Four or five on the branches of a fruitful tree,
Declares the LORD, the God of Israel.

7 On that day man will (C1)look to his Maker
And his eyes will look to the Holy One of Israel.

8 And he will not look to the (C1)altars, the work of his hands,
Nor will he look to that which his (C2)fingers have made,
Even the (F1)(C3)Asherim and incense altars.

9 On that day (F1)their strong cities will be like (F2)abandoned places in the forest,
Or like branches which they abandoned before the sons of Israel;
And (F3)the land will be a desolation.

10 For (C1)you have forgotten the (C2)God of your salvation
And have not remembered the (C3)rock of your refuge.
Therefore you plant delightful plants
And set them with vine shoots of a strange god.

11 On the day that you plant it you carefully fence it in,
And in the (C1)morning you bring your seed to blossom;
But the harvest will (C2)flee
On a day of illness and incurable pain.

12 Oh, the uproar of many peoples
(C1)Who roar like the roaring of the seas,
And the rumbling of nations
Who rush on like the (C2)rumbling of mighty waters!

13 The (C1)nations rumble on like the rumbling of many waters,
But He will (C2)rebuke them, and they will flee far away,
And be chased (C3)like chaff on the mountains before the wind,
Or like whirling dust before a gale.

14 At evening time, behold, there is terror!
Before morning (C1)they are gone.
This will be the (F1)fate of those who plunder us
And the lot of those who pillage us.

Chapter 18

Message to Ethiopia

1 Woe, land of whirring wings
Which lies beyond the rivers of (F1)(C1)Cush,

2 Which sends messengers by the sea,
Even in (C1)papyrus vessels on the surface of the waters.
Go, swift messengers, to a nation (F1)(C2)tall and smooth,
To a people (C3)feared (F2)far and wide,
A powerful and oppressive nation
Whose land the rivers divide.

3 (C1)All you who inhabit the world, and live on earth,
As soon as a flag is raised on the mountains, (C2)you will see it,
And as soon as the trumpet is blown, you will hear it.

4 For this is what the LORD has told me:

"I will quietly look (F1)from My (C1)dwelling place
Like dazzling heat in the (F2)(C2)sunshine,
Like a cloud of (C3)dew in the heat of harvest."

5 For (C1)before the harvest, as soon as the bud (F1)blossoms
And the flower becomes a ripening grape,
He will cut off the shoots with pruning knives,
And remove and tear away the spreading branches.

6 They will be left together for mountain birds (C1)of prey,
And for the animals of the earth;
And the birds of prey will spend the summer feeding on them,
And all the animals of the earth will spend harvest time on them.

7 At that time a gift of tribute will be brought to the LORD of armies
(F1)From a (C1)people (F2)tall and smooth,
From a people feared (F3)far and wide,
A powerful and oppressive nation,
Whose land the rivers divide—
To the (C2)place of the name of the LORD of armies, to Mount Zion.

Chapter 19

Message to Egypt

1 The (C1)pronouncement concerning (C2)Egypt:

Behold, the LORD is (C3)riding on a swift cloud and is about to come to Egypt;
The (C4)idols of Egypt will tremble at His presence,
And the (C5)heart of the Egyptians will melt within them.

2 "So I will incite Egyptians against Egyptians;
And they will fight, (C1)each against his brother and each against his neighbor,
City against city and kingdom against kingdom.

3 "Then the spirit of the Egyptians will be demoralized within them;
And I will confuse their strategy,
So that (C1)they will resort to idols and ghosts of the dead,
And to (F1)mediums and spiritists.

4 "Furthermore, I will hand the Egyptians over to a (C1)cruel master,
And a (F1)mighty king will rule over them," declares the Lord (F2)GOD of armies.

5 (C1)The waters from the sea will dry up,
And the river will be parched and dry.

6 The (F1)(C1)canals will emit a stench,
The (F2)(C2)streams of Egypt will thin out and dry up;
(C3)The reeds and rushes will rot away.

7 The bulrushes by the (C1)Nile, by the (F1)edge of the Nile
And all the sown fields by the Nile
Will become dry, be driven away, and be no more.

8 And the (C1)fishermen will grieve,
And all those who cast a (F1)line into the Nile will mourn,
And those who spread nets on the waters will dwindle away.

9 Moreover, the manufacturers of linen made from combed flax
And the weavers of white (C1)cloth will be (F1)utterly dejected.

10 And (F1)the (C1)pillars of Egypt will be crushed;
All the hired laborers will be grieved in soul.

11 The officials of (F1)(C1)Zoan are mere fools;
The advice of Pharaoh's wisest advisers has become (F2)stupid.
How can you say to Pharaoh,
"I am a son of the (C2)wise, a son of ancient kings"?

12 Well then, where are your wise men?
Please let them tell you,
And let them (F1)understand what the LORD of armies
Has (C1)planned against Egypt.

13 The officials of (F1)Zoan have turned out to be fools,
The officials of (C1)Memphis are deluded;
Those who are the (C2)cornerstone of her tribes
Have (F2)led Egypt astray.

14 The LORD has mixed within her a spirit of (C1)distortion;
(C2)They have led Egypt astray in all (F1)that it does,
As a (C3)drunken person (F2)staggers in his vomit.

15 There will be no work for Egypt
(C1)Which its head or tail, its palm branch or bulrush, may do.

16 On that day the Egyptians will become like women, and they will tremble and be in great (C1)fear because of the (C2)waving of the hand of the LORD of armies, which He is going to wave over them.17 The land of Judah will become a cause of shame to Egypt; everyone to whom it is mentioned will be in great fear because of the (C1)plan of the LORD of armies which He is making against them.

18 On that day five cities in the land of Egypt will be speaking the language of Canaan and (C1)swearing allegiance to the LORD of armies; one will be called the City of (F1)Destruction.

19 On that day there will be an (C1)altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a (C2)memorial stone to the LORD beside its border.20 And it will become a sign and a witness to the LORD of armies in the land of Egypt; for they will cry out to the LORD because of oppressors, and He will send them a (C1)Savior and a (C2)Champion, and He will save them.21 So the LORD will make Himself known to Egypt, and the Egyptians will know the LORD on that day. They will even worship with (C1)sacrifice and offering, and will make a vow to the LORD and perform it.22 And the LORD will strike Egypt, striking but (C1)healing; so they will (C2)return to the LORD, and He will respond to their pleas and heal them.

23 On that day there will be a (C1)road from Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrians will come into Egypt and the Egyptians into Assyria; and the Egyptians will (C2)worship with the Assyrians.

24 On that day Israel will be the third party to Egypt and Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the earth,25 whom the LORD of armies has blessed, saying, "Blessed is (C1)Egypt My people, and Assyria (C2)the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance."

Psalms 114

Chapter 114

God's Rescue of Israel from Egypt.

1 When Israel went forth (C1)from Egypt,
The house of Jacob from a people of a (C2)foreign language,

2 Judah became (C1)His sanctuary;
Israel, (C2)His dominion.

3 The (C1)sea looked and fled;
The (C2)Jordan turned back.

4 The mountains (C1)skipped like rams,
The hills, like lambs.

5 What (C1)ails you, sea, that you flee?
Jordan, that you turn back?

6 Mountains, that you skip like rams?
Hills, like lambs?

7 (C1)Tremble, earth, before the Lord,
Before the God of Jacob,

8 Who (C1)turned the rock into a (C2)pool of water,
The (C3)flint into a fountain of water.

1 Thessalonians 2:17-3:13

Chapter 2

17 But we, brothers and sisters, having been orphaned from you by absence for a (F1)short while—(C1)in (F2)person, not in (F3)spirit—were all the more eager with great desire (C2)to see your face.18 (F1)For (C1)we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, (F2)(C2)more than once—and (C3)Satan (C4)hindered us.19 For who is our hope, or (C1)joy or crown of pride, in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His (F1)(C2)coming? Or is it not indeed you?20 For you are (C1)our glory and joy.

Chapter 3

Encouragement of Timothy's Visit

1 Therefore, (C1)when we could no longer endure it, we thought it best to be left behind, alone at (C2)Athens,2 and we sent (C1)Timothy, our brother and God's fellow worker in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you for the benefit of your faith,3 so that no one would be (F1)disturbed by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that (C1)we have been destined for this.4 For even when we were with you, we kept telling you in advance that we were going to suffer affliction; (F1)(C1)and so it happened, (F2)as you know.5 For this reason, (C1)when I could no longer endure it, I also (C2)sent to (F1)find out about your faith, for fear that (C3)the tempter might have tempted you, and (C4)our labor would be for nothing.

6 But now that (C1)Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us good news of (C2)your faith and love, and that you always (C3)think kindly of us, longing to see us just as we also long to see you,7 for this reason, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and affliction we were comforted about you through your faith;8 for now we really live, if you (C1)stand firm in the Lord.9 For (C1)what thanks can we give to God for you in return for all the joy with which we rejoice because of you before our God,10 as we (C1)keep praying most earnestly night and day that we may (C2)see your faces, and may (C3)complete what is lacking in your faith?

11 (C1)Now may (C2)our God and Father (C3)Himself, and our Lord Jesus, (C4)direct our way to you;12 and may the Lord cause you to increase and (C1)overflow in love for one another, and for all people, just as we also do for you;13 so that He may (C1)establish your hearts (C2)blameless in holiness before (C3)our God and Father at the (F1)(C4)coming of our Lord Jesus (C5)with all His (F2)saints.
