Isaiah 23-24

Chapter 23

The Fall of Tyre

1 The pronouncement concerning (C1)Tyre:

Wail, you (C2)ships of (C3)Tarshish,
For Tyre is destroyed, without house or (F1)(C4)harbor;
It is reported to them from the land of (F2)(C5)Cyprus.

2 (C1)Be silent, you inhabitants of the coastland,
You merchants of Sidon;
(F1)Your messengers crossed the sea

3 And were on many waters.
(C1)The grain of the (F1)(C2)Nile, the harvest of the River was her revenue;
And she was the (C3)market of nations.

4 Be ashamed, (C1)Sidon,
For the sea speaks, the stronghold of the sea, saying,
"I have neither been in labor nor given birth,
I have neither brought up young men nor raised virgins."

5 When the report reaches Egypt,
They will be in (C1)anguish over the report of Tyre.

6 Pass over to (C1)Tarshish;
Wail, you inhabitants of the coastland.

7 Is this your (C1)jubilant city,
Whose origin is from antiquity,
Whose feet used to bring her to (F1)colonize distant places?

8 Who has planned this against Tyre, (C1)the bestower of crowns,
Whose merchants were princes, whose traders were the honored of the earth?

9 (C1)The LORD of armies has planned it, to (C2)defile the pride of all beauty,
To despise all the (C3)honored of the earth.

10 (F1)Overflow your land like the Nile, you daughter of Tarshish,
There is no more (F2)restraint.

11 He has (C1)stretched His hand out (C2)over the sea,
He has (C3)made the kingdoms tremble;
The LORD has given a command concerning Canaan to (C4)demolish its strongholds.

12 He has said, "(C1)You shall not be jubilant anymore, you crushed virgin daughter of Sidon.
Arise, pass over to (F1)(C2)Cyprus; even there you will find no rest."

13 Behold, the land of the Chaldeans—this is the people that did not exist; (C1)Assyria allocated it for (C2)desert creatures—they erected their siege towers, they stripped its palaces, (C3)they made it a ruin.

14 Wail, you (C1)ships of Tarshish,
For your stronghold is destroyed.

15 Now on that day Tyre will be forgotten for (C1)seventy years like the days of one king. At the end of seventy years it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:

16 Take your harp, wander around the city,
You forgotten prostitute;
Pluck the strings skillfully, sing many songs,
That you may be remembered.

17 It will come about at (C1)the end of seventy years that the LORD will visit Tyre. Then she will go back to her prostitute's wages and (C2)commit prostitution with all the kingdoms (F1)on the face of the earth.18 Her (C1)profit and her prostitute's wages will be (C2)sacred to the LORD; it will not be stored up or hoarded, but her profit will become sufficient food and magnificent attire for those who dwell in the presence of the LORD.

Chapter 24

Judgment on the Earth

1 Behold, the LORD (C1)lays the earth waste, devastates it, twists its surface, and scatters its inhabitants.2 And the people will be like the priest, the servant like his master, the female servant like her mistress, the buyer like the seller, the lender like the borrower, the (C1)creditor like the debtor.3 The earth will be completely laid waste and completely plundered, for the LORD has spoken this word.4 The (C1)earth dries up and crumbles away, the mainland dries out and crumbles away, the (C2)exalted of the people of the earth dwindle.5 The earth is also (C1)defiled (F1)by its inhabitants, for they violated laws, altered statutes, and (C2)broke the everlasting covenant.6 Therefore, a (C1)curse devours the earth, and those who live on it suffer for their guilt. Therefore, the (C2)inhabitants of the earth decrease in number, and few people are left.

7 The (C1)new wine mourns,
The vine decays,
All the joyful-hearted sigh.

8 The (C1)joy of tambourines ceases,
The noise of revelers stops,
The joy of the harp ceases.

9 They do not drink wine with song;
(C1)Intoxicating drink is (C2)bitter to those who drink it.

10 The (C1)city of chaos is broken down;
(C2)Every house is shut up so that no one may enter.

11 There is an (C1)outcry in the streets concerning the wine;
(C2)All joy (F1)turns to gloom.
The joy of the earth is banished.

12 Desolation is left in the city
And the (C1)gate is battered to ruins.

13 For (C1)so it will be in the midst of the earth among the peoples,
As the (F1)shaking of an olive tree,
As the gleanings when the grape harvest is over.

14 (C1)They raise their voices, they shout for joy;
They cry out from the (F1)west concerning the majesty of the LORD.

15 Therefore (C1)glorify the LORD in the (F1)east,
The (C2)name of the LORD, the God of Israel,
In the (F2)(C3)coastlands of the sea.

16 From the (C1)ends of the earth we hear songs: "(C2)Glory to the Righteous One,"
But I say, "(F1)I am finished! I am finished! Woe to me!
The (C3)treacherous deal treacherously,
And the treacherous deal very treacherously."

17 (C1)Terror and pit and snare
(F1)Confront you, you inhabitant of the earth.

18 Then it will be that the one who flees the sound of terror will fall into the pit,
And the one who (F1)climbs out of the pit will be caught in the snare;
For the (C1)windows (F2)above are opened, and the (C2)foundations of the earth shake.

19 (C1)The earth is broken apart,
The earth is (C2)split through,
The earth is shaken violently.

20 The earth (C1)trembles like a heavy drinker
And sways like a hut,
For its (C2)wrongdoing is heavy upon it,
And it will fall, (C3)never to rise again.

21 So it will happen on that day,
That the LORD will (C1)punish the rebellious (F1)(C2)angels of (F2)heaven on high,
And the (C3)kings of the earth on earth.

22 They will be gathered together
Like (C1)prisoners in the (F1)dungeon,
And will be confined in prison;
And after many days they will (C2)be punished.

23 Then the (C1)moon will be ashamed and the sun be put to shame,
For the (C2)LORD of armies will reign on (C3)Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
And His glory will be before His elders.

Psalms 116

Chapter 116

Thanksgiving for Rescue from Death.

1 (C1)I love the LORD, because He (C2)hears
My voice and my pleas.

2 Because He has (C1)inclined His ear to me,
Therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live.

3 The (C1)snares of death encompassed me
And the (F1)terrors of (F2)Sheol (F3)came upon me;
I found distress and sorrow.

4 Then (C1)I called upon the name of the LORD:
"Please, LORD, (C2)save my (F1)life!"

5 (C1)Gracious is the LORD, and (C2)righteous;
Yes, our God is (C3)compassionate.

6 The LORD watches over (C1)the simple;
I was (C2)brought low, and He saved me.

7 Return to your (C1)rest, my soul,
For the LORD has (C2)dealt generously with you.

8 For You have (C1)rescued my soul from death,
My eyes from tears,
And my feet from stumbling.

9 I shall walk before the LORD
In the (F1)(C1)land of the living.

10 I (C1)believed when I said,
"I am (C2)greatly afflicted."

11 I (C1)said in my alarm,
"(C2)All people are liars."

12 What shall I (C1)repay to the LORD
For all His (C2)benefits (F1)to me?

13 I will lift up the (C1)cup of salvation,
And (C2)call upon the name of the LORD.

14 I will (C1)pay my vows to the LORD;
May it be (C2)in the presence of all His people!

15 (C1)Precious in the sight of the LORD
Is the death of His godly ones.

16 O LORD, (F1)I surely am (C1)Your slave,
I am Your slave, the (C2)son of Your female slave,
You have (C3)unfastened my restraints.

17 I will offer You (C1)a sacrifice of thanksgiving,
And (C2)call upon the name of the LORD.

18 I will (C1)pay my vows to the LORD,
May it be in the presence of all His people,

19 In the (C1)courtyards of the LORD'S house,
In the midst of you, (C2)Jerusalem!
(F1)Praise (F2)the LORD!

1 Thessalonians 5

Chapter 5

The Day of the Lord

1 Now as to the (C1)periods and (F1)times, brothers and sisters, you (C2)have no need of anything to be written to you.2 For you yourselves know full well that (C1)the day of the Lord is coming (C2)just like a thief in the night.3 While they are saying, "(C1)Peace and safety!" then (C2)sudden destruction (F1)will come upon them like (C3)labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in (C1)darkness, so that the day would overtake you (F1)(C2)like a thief;5 for you are all (C1)sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of (C2)darkness;6 so then, let's not (C1)sleep as (F1)(C2)others do, but let's be alert and (F2)(C3)sober.7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who are drunk, (C1)get drunk at night.8 But since (C1)we are of the day, let's (C2)be (F1)sober, having put on the (C3)breastplate of (C4)faith and love, and as a (C5)helmet, the (C6)hope of salvation.9 For God has not destined us for (C1)wrath, but for (C2)obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,10 (C1)who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him.11 Therefore, (F1)encourage one another and (C1)build one another up, just as you also are doing.

Christian Conduct

12 But we ask you, brothers and sisters, to (C1)recognize those (C2)who diligently labor among you and (F1)(C3)are in leadership over you in the Lord, and give you (F2)instruction,13 and that you regard them very highly in love because of their work. (C1)Live in peace with one another.14 We urge you, brothers and sisters, admonish (C1)the (F1)unruly, encourage (C2)the fainthearted, help (C3)the weak, be (C4)patient with everyone.15 See that (C1)no one repays another with evil for evil, but always (C2)seek what is good for one another and for all people.16 (C1)Rejoice always,17 (C1)pray without ceasing,18 in everything (C1)give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.19 (C1)Do not quench the Spirit,20 do not utterly reject (F1)(C1)prophecies,21 but (C1)examine everything; (C2)hold firmly to that which is good,22 abstain from every (F1)form of evil.

23 Now (C1)may the God of peace (C2)Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your (C3)spirit and soul and body be kept complete, (C4)without blame at (C5)the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.24 (C1)Faithful is He who (C2)calls you, and He also will do it.

25 Brothers and sisters, (C1)pray for us(F1).

26 (C1)Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss.27 I put you under oath by the Lord to (C1)have this letter read to all the (C2)brothers and sisters.

28 (C1)May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
