Chapter 36
Joahaz, Jehoiakim, Then Jehoiachin Rule
1 (C1)Then the people of the land took (F1)(C2)Joahaz the son of Josiah and made him king in place of his father in Jerusalem.2 Joahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned for three months in Jerusalem.3 Then the king of Egypt deposed him in Jerusalem, and imposed a fine on the land of (F1)a hundred talents of silver and (F2)one talent of gold.4 The king of Egypt made (F1)Joahaz's brother Eliakim king over Judah and Jerusalem, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. But (C1)Neco took his brother Joahaz and brought him to Egypt.
5 (C1)Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem; and he did evil in the sight of the LORD his God.6 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up (C1)against him and (C2)bound him with bronze chains to take him to Babylon.7 (C1)Nebuchadnezzar also brought some of the articles of the house of the LORD to Babylon, and he put them in his temple in Babylon.8 (C1)Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim and (F1)the abominations which he committed, and what was found against him, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah. And his son Jehoiachin became king in his place.
9 (C1)Jehoiachin was (F1)eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned for three months and ten days in Jerusalem. He did evil in the sight of the LORD.
Captivity in Babylon Begun
10 (C1)At the turn of the year King Nebuchadnezzar sent men and had him brought to Babylon with the valuable articles of the house of the LORD; and he made his relative (C2)Zedekiah king over Judah and Jerusalem.Zedekiah Rules in Judah
11 (C1)Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem.12 He did evil in the sight of the LORD his God; (C1)he did not humble himself (C2)before Jeremiah the prophet (F1)who spoke for the LORD.13 (C1)He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear allegiance by God. But (C2)he stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the LORD God of Israel.14 Furthermore, all the officials of the priests and the people were very unfaithful, following all the abominations of the nations; and they defiled the house of the LORD which He had sanctified in Jerusalem.
15 Yet the LORD, the God of their fathers, (C1)sent word to them again and again by His messengers, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place;16 but they continually (C1)mocked the messengers of God, (C2)despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, (C3)until the wrath of the LORD rose against His people, until there was no remedy.17 (C1)So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or frail; He handed them all over to him.18 (C1)He brought all the articles of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king and his officers, to Babylon.19 Then (C1)they burned the house of God and broke down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned all its fortified buildings with fire and destroyed all its valuable articles.20 He (C1)took into exile those who had escaped from the sword to Babylon; and (C2)they were servants to him and to his sons until the rule of the kingdom of Persia,21 (C1)to fulfill the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until (C2)the land had enjoyed its Sabbaths. (C3)All the days of its desolation it kept the Sabbath (F1)(C4)until seventy years were complete.
Cyrus Permits Return
22 (C1)Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia—in order to fulfill the word of the LORD (C2)by the mouth of Jeremiah—the LORD (C3)stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia so that he sent a proclamation throughout his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying,23 "This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: 'The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and He has appointed me to build Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever there is among you of all His people, may the LORD his God be with him; (F1)go up then!'"
Daniel 1,2
The Choice Young Men
1 In the third year of the reign of (C1)Jehoiakim king of Judah, (C2)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.2 And the (C1)Lord handed Jehoiakim king of Judah over to him, along with some of the (C2)vessels of the house of God; and he brought them to the land of (C3)Shinar, to the house of his (F1)god, and he brought the vessels into the treasury of his (F1)(C4)god.
3 Then the king told Ashpenaz, the chief of his (F1)officials, to bring in some of the sons of Israel, including some of the (F2)royal (C1)family and of the nobles,4 youths in whom there was (C1)no impairment, who were good-looking, suitable for (C2)instruction in every kind of expertise, endowed with understanding and discerning knowledge, and who had ability to (F1)serve in the king's (F2)court; and he ordered Ashpenaz to teach them the (F3)literature and (C3)language of the (C4)Chaldeans.5 The king also allotted for them a daily ration from the (C1)king's choice food and from the wine which he drank, and ordered that they be educated for three years, at the end of which they were to (F1)(C2)enter the king's personal service.6 Now among them from the sons of Judah were (C1)Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.7 Then the commander of the officials assigned new names to them; and to Daniel he assigned the name (C1)Belteshazzar, to Hananiah (C2)Shadrach, to Mishael (C2)Meshach, and to Azariah (C2)Abed-nego.
Daniel's Resolve
8 But Daniel (F1)made up his mind that he would not (C1)defile himself with the (C2)king's choice food or with the (C3)wine which he drank; so he sought permission from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself.9 Now God granted Daniel (C1)favor and compassion in the sight of the commander of the officials.10 The commander of the officials said to Daniel, "I am afraid of my lord the king, who has allotted your food and your drink; for why should he see your faces looking gaunt in comparison to the youths who are your own age? Then you would (F1)make me forfeit my head to the king."11 But Daniel said to the overseer whom the commander of the officials had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,12 "Please put your servants to the test for ten days, and let us be (C1)given some vegetables to eat and water to drink.13 "Then let our appearance be (F1)examined in your presence and the appearance of the youths who are eating the king's choice food; and deal with your servants according to what you see."
14 So he listened to them in this matter, and put them to the test for ten days.15 And at the end of ten days their appearance seemed (C1)better, and (F1)they were fatter than all the youths who had been eating the king's choice food.16 So the overseer continued to (F1)withhold their choice food and the wine they were to drink, and kept (C1)giving them vegetables.
17 And as for these four youths, (C1)God gave them knowledge and intelligence in every kind of (F1)literature and expertise; Daniel even understood all kinds of (C2)visions and dreams.
18 Then at the end of the days which the king had (F1)specified (F2)for presenting them, the commander of the officials (F3)presented them before Nebuchadnezzar.19 And the king talked with them, and out of them all not one was found like (C1)Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; so they (F1)(C2)entered the king's personal service.20 As for every matter of (C1)expertise (F1)and understanding about which the king consulted them, he found them (C2)ten times (C3)better than all the (C4)soothsayer priests and conjurers who were in all his realm.21 And Daniel (F1)continued until the (C1)first year of Cyrus the king.
The King's Dream
1 Now in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar (F1)(C1)had dreams; and his spirit was troubled and his (C2)sleep (F2)left him.2 Then the king (F1)gave orders to call in the (C1)soothsayer priests, the conjurers, the sorcerers, and the (F2)Chaldeans, to (F3)tell the king his dreams. So they came in and stood before the king.3 The king said to them, "I (F1)(C1)had a dream, and my spirit (F2)is anxious to (F3)understand the dream."
4 Then the Chaldeans spoke to the king in (F1)(C1)Aramaic: "(C2)O king, live forever! (C3)Tell the dream to your servants, and we will declare the interpretation."5 The king replied to the Chaldeans, "The command (F1)from me is firm: if you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you will be (F2)(C1)torn limb from limb and your houses will be turned into a rubbish heap.6 "But if you declare the dream and its interpretation, you will receive from me (C1)gifts and a reward and great honor; therefore declare to me the dream and its interpretation."7 They answered a second time and said, "Let the king (C1)tell the dream to his servants, and we will declare the interpretation."8 The king replied, "I know for certain that you are trying to buy time, because you have perceived that the command (F1)from me is firm,9 that if you do not make the dream known to me, there is only (C1)one (F1)decree for you. For you have agreed together to speak lying and corrupt (F2)words before me until the (F3)situation is changed; therefore tell me the dream, so that I may (C2)know that you can declare to me its interpretation."10 The Chaldeans answered (F1)the king and said, "There is no person on earth who could declare the matter (F2)to the king, because no great king or ruler has ever asked anything like this of any (C1)soothsayer priest, sorcerer, or Chaldean.11 "Moreover, the thing which the king demands is difficult, and there is no one else who could declare it (F1)to the king except (C1)gods, whose (C2)dwelling place is not with mortal flesh."
12 Because of this, the king became (C1)angry and extremely furious, and he gave orders to kill all the wise men of Babylon.13 So the (F1)decree was issued that the wise men be killed; and they looked for (C1)Daniel and his friends, to (F2)kill them.
14 Then Daniel replied with discretion and discernment to (C1)Arioch, the captain of the king's (F1)bodyguard, who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon;15 he said to Arioch, the king's officer, "For what reason is the decree from the king so harsh?" Then Arioch informed Daniel of the matter.16 So Daniel went in and requested of the king that he would give him a grace period, so that he might declare the interpretation to the king.
17 Then Daniel went to his house and informed his friends, (C1)Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, about the matter,18 so that they might (C1)request compassion from the God of heaven concerning this secret, so that Daniel and his friends would not be (C2)killed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
The Secret Is Revealed to Daniel
19 Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a night (C1)vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven;20 Daniel said,"May the name of God be (C1)blessed forever and ever,
For (C2)wisdom and power belong to Him.
21 "It is He who (C1)changes the times and the periods;
He (C2)removes kings and appoints kings;
He gives (C3)wisdom to wise men,
And knowledge to (F1)people of understanding.
22 "It is He who (C1)reveals the profound and hidden things;
(C2)He knows what is in the darkness,
And the (C3)light dwells with Him.
23 "To You, (C1)God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise,
For You have given me (C2)wisdom and power;
Even now You have made known to me what we (C3)requested of You,
For You have made known to us the king's matter."
24 Thereupon, Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to kill the wise men of Babylon; he went and said this to him: "(C1)Do not kill the wise men of Babylon! Take me (F1)into the king's presence, and I will declare the interpretation to the king."
25 Then Arioch hurriedly (C1)brought Daniel (F1)into the king's presence and spoke to him as follows: "I have found a man among the (F2)(C2)exiles from Judah who can make the interpretation known to the king!"26 The king said to Daniel, whose name was (C1)Belteshazzar, "Are you able to make known to me the dream which I have seen and its interpretation?"27 Daniel answered before the king and said, "As for the secret about which the king has inquired, neither (C1)wise men, sorcerers, soothsayer priests, nor diviners are able to declare it to the king.28 "However, there is a (C1)God in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the (F1)(C2)latter days. This was your dream and the (C3)visions (F2)in your mind while on your bed.29 "As for you, O king, while on your bed your thoughts (F1)turned to what would take place (F2)in the future; and (C1)He who reveals secrets has made known to you what will take place.30 "But as for me, this secret has not been revealed to me (F1)for any (C1)wisdom (F2)residing in me more than in any other living person, but for the purpose of making the interpretation known to the king, and that you may understand the (C2)thoughts of your (F3)mind.
The King's Dream
31 "You, O king, were watching and behold, there was a single great statue; that statue, which was large and (F1)of extraordinary radiance, was standing in front of you, and its appearance was (F2)(C1)awesome.32 "The (C1)head of that statue was made of fine gold, its chest and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of bronze,33 its legs of iron, and its feet partly of iron and partly of clay.34 "You (F1)continued watching until a (C1)stone was broken off (C2)without hands, and it struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay, and (C3)crushed them.35 "Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed to pieces (F1)all at the same time, and they were (C1)like chaff from the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away so that (C2)not a trace of them was found. But the stone that struck the statue became a great (C3)mountain and filled the entire earth.
The Interpretation—Babylon the First Kingdom
36 "This was the dream; and now we will tell (C1)its interpretation before the king.37 "You, O king, are the (C1)king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the (F1)kingdom, the (C2)power, the strength, and the honor;38 and wherever the sons of mankind live, or the (C1)animals of the field, or the birds of the sky, He has handed them over to you and has made you ruler over them all. You are the head of gold.

39 "And after you another kingdom will arise inferior to you, then another third kingdom of bronze, which will rule over all the earth.Rome
40 "Then there will be a (C1)fourth kingdom as strong as iron; just as iron smashes and crushes everything, so, like iron that crushes, it will smash and crush all these things.41 "And in that you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter's clay and partly of iron, it will be a divided kingdom; but it will have within it some of the toughness of iron, since you saw the iron mixed with (F1)common clay.42 "And just as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of pottery, so some of the kingdom will be strong, and part of it will be fragile.43 "In that you saw the iron mixed with (F1)common clay, they will combine with one another (F2)in (F3)their descendants; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not combine with pottery.The Divine Kingdom
44 "And in the days of those kings the (C1)God of heaven will (C2)set up a (C3)kingdom which will never be destroyed, and that kingdom will not be (F1)left for another people; it will (C4)crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself endure forever.45 "Just as you saw that a (C1)stone was broken off from the mountain without hands, and that it crushed the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold, the (C2)great God has made known to the king what (C3)will take place (F1)in the future; so the dream is certain and its interpretation is trustworthy."Daniel Promoted
46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face and paid (C1)humble respect to Daniel, and gave orders to present to him an offering and (C2)incense.47 The king responded to Daniel and said, "(C1)Your God truly is a (C2)God of gods and a Lord of kings and a (C3)revealer of secrets, since you have been able to reveal this secret."48 Then the king (F1)(C1)promoted Daniel and gave him many great gifts, and he made him ruler over the entire (C2)province of Babylon, and chief (F2)prefect over all the wise men of Babylon.49 And Daniel made a request of the king, and he (C1)appointed (C2)Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego over the administration of the province of Babylon, while Daniel was at the king's (F1)(C3)court.

Chapter 1
Salutation
1 Paul, (C1)a bond-servant of God and an (C2)apostle of Jesus Christ, (F1)for the faith of those (C3)chosen of God and (C4)the knowledge of the truth which is (C5)according to godliness,2 in (C1)the hope of eternal life, which God, (C2)who cannot lie, (C3)promised (F1)(C4)long ages ago,3 but (C1)at the proper time revealed His word in (C2)the proclamation (C3)with which I was entrusted (C4)according to the commandment of (C5)God our Savior;
4 To (C1)Titus, (C2)my true (F1)son (F2)in a (C3)common faith: (C4)Grace and peace from God the Father and (C5)Christ Jesus our Savior.
Qualifications of Elders
5 For this reason I left you in (C1)Crete, that you would set in order what remains and (C2)appoint (C3)elders in every city as I directed you,6 namely, (C1)if any man is beyond reproach, the (C2)husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of (C3)indecent behavior or (C4)rebellion.7 For the (F1)(C1)overseer must be beyond reproach as (C2)God's steward, not (C3)self-willed, not quick-tempered, not (C4)overindulging in wine, not (F2)a bully, (C5)not greedy for money,8 but (C1)hospitable, (C2)loving what is good, self-controlled, righteous, holy, disciplined,9 (C1)holding firmly the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to (F1)exhort in (C2)sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict it.
10 (C1)For there are many (C2)rebellious people, (C3)empty talkers and deceivers, especially (C4)those of the circumcision,11 who must be silenced because they are upsetting (C1)whole families, teaching (C2)things they should not teach (C3)for the sake of (F1)dishonest gain.12 One of them, a prophet of their own, said, "(C1)Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons."13 This testimony is true. For this reason (C1)reprimand them (C2)severely so that they may be (C3)sound in the faith,14 not paying attention to Jewish (C1)myths and (C2)commandments of men who (C3)turn away from the truth.15 (C1)To the pure, all things are pure; but (C2)to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their (C3)mind and their conscience are defiled.16 (C1)They profess to know God, but by their deeds they (C2)deny Him, being (C3)detestable and (C4)disobedient and (C5)worthless (C6)for any good deed.
