Ezekiel 19

Chapter 19

Song of Mourning for the Leaders of Israel

1 "As for you, take up a (C1)song of mourning for the (C2)leaders of Israel2 and say,

'(F1)What was your mother?
A lioness among lions!
She lay down among young lions,
She raised her cubs.

3 'When she brought up one of her cubs,
(C1)He became a young lion,
And he learned to tear his prey;
He devoured people.

4 'Then nations heard about him;
He was caught in their trap,
And they (C1)brought him with hooks
To the land of Egypt.

5 'When she saw, as she waited,
That her hope was lost,
She took (F1)another of her cubs
And made (C1)him a young lion.

6 'And he (C1)walked about among the lions,
He became a young lion;
He learned to tear his prey;
He devoured people.

7 'He (F1)destroyed their (F2)palaces
And laid waste their cities;
And the land and its fullness were appalled
Because of the sound of his roaring.

8 'Then (C1)nations set against him
On every side from their provinces,
And they spread their net over him;
He was caught in their trap.

9 '(C1)They put him in a (F1)wooden collar with hooks
And (C2)brought him to the king of Babylon;
They brought him in hunting nets
So that his voice would no longer be heard
On the mountains of Israel.

10 'Your mother was (C1)like a vine in your (F1)vineyard,
Planted by the waters;
It was fruitful and thick with branches
Because of abundant waters.

11 'And it had (F1)(C1)strong stems fit for scepters of rulers,
And its (C2)height was raised above the clouds
So that it was seen in its height with the mass of its branches.

12 'But it was (C1)uprooted in fury;
It was (C2)thrown down to the ground;
And the (C3)east wind dried up its fruit.
(F1)Its (C4)strong stem (F2)was torn out
So that (F3)it withered;
The fire consumed it.

13 'And now it is planted in the (C1)wilderness,
In a dry and thirsty land.

14 'And (C1)fire has gone out from its stem;
It has consumed its shoots and fruit,
So that there is no (F1)strong stem in it,
A scepter to rule.'"
This is a song of mourning, and has become a song of mourning.

Isaiah 48

Chapter 48

Israel's Obstinacy

1 "(C1)Hear this, house of Jacob, who are named Israel
And who came from the (C2)waters of Judah,
Who (C3)swear by the name of the LORD
And invoke the God of Israel,
But not in truth nor in (C4)righteousness.

2 "For they name themselves after the (C1)holy city,
And (C2)lean on the God of Israel;
The LORD of armies is His name.

3 "I (C1)declared the former things long ago,
And they went out of My mouth, and I proclaimed them.
(C2)Suddenly I acted, and they (C3)came to pass.

4 "Because I know that you are (F1)(C1)obstinate,
And your (C2)neck is an iron tendon
And your (C3)forehead bronze,

5 Therefore I declared them to you long ago,
Before (F1)they took place I proclaimed them to you,
So that you would not say, 'My (C1)idol has done them,
And my carved image and my cast metal image have commanded them.'

6 "You have heard; look at all this.
And you, will you not declare it?
I proclaim to you (C1)new things from this time,
Hidden things which you have not known.

7 "They are created now and not long ago;
And before today you have not heard them,
So that you will not say, 'Behold, I knew them.'

8 "You have not (C1)heard, you have not known.
Even from long ago your ear has not been open,
Because I knew that you would deal very treacherously;
And you have been called a (F1)(C2)rebel from (F2)birth.

9 "(C1)For the sake of My name I (C2)delay My wrath,
And for My praise I restrain it for you,
In order not to cut you off.

10 "Behold, I have refined you, but (C1)not as silver;
I have tested you in the (C2)furnace of affliction.

11 "(C1)For My own sake, for My own sake, I will act;
For how can My name be profaned?
And I will not give My (C2)glory to another.

Rescue Promised

12 "Listen to Me, Jacob, Israel (F1)whom I called;
(C1)I am He, (C2)I am the first, I am also the last.

13 "Assuredly My hand (C1)founded the earth,
And My right hand spread out the heavens;
When I (C2)call to them, they stand together.

14 "(C1)Assemble, all of you, and listen!
(C2)Who among them has declared these things?
The LORD loves him; he will (C3)carry out His good pleasure against (C4)Babylon,
And His arm will be against the Chaldeans.

15 "I, yes I, have spoken; indeed I have (C1)called him,
I have brought him, and He will make his ways successful.

16 "(C1)Come near to Me, listen to this:
From the beginning I have (C2)not spoken in secret,
(C3)From the time it took place, I was there.
And now (C4)the Lord (F1)GOD has sent Me, and His Spirit."

17 This is what the LORD says, He who is your (C1)Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:

"I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to benefit,
Who (C2)leads you in the way you should go.

18 "If only you had (C1)paid attention to My commandments!
Then your (F1)(C2)well-being would have been like a river,
And your (C3)righteousness like the waves of the sea.

19 "Your (F1)(C1)descendants would have been like the sand,
And (F2)your offspring like its grains;
(C2)Their name would never be eliminated or destroyed from My presence."

20 (C1)Go out from Babylon! Flee from the Chaldeans!
Declare with the sound of (C2)joyful shouting, proclaim this,
(C3)Send it out to the end of the earth;
Say, "(C4)The LORD has redeemed His servant Jacob."

21 They did not (C1)thirst when He led them through the deserts.
He (C2)made the water flow out of the rock for them;
He split the rock and (C3)the water gushed out.

22 "(C1)There is no peace for the wicked," says the LORD.

Philippians 1:12-30

Chapter 1

12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that my circumstances (C1)have turned out for the greater progress of the (C2)gospel,13 so that my (F1)(C1)imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the (F2)praetorian guard and to (C2)everyone else,14 and that most of the brothers and sisters, (F1)trusting in the Lord because of my (F2)(C1)imprisonment, have (C2)far more courage to speak the word of God without fear.15 (C1)Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even (F1)from envy and strife, but some also (F1)from goodwill;16 the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the (C1)gospel;17 the former proclaim Christ (C1)out of selfish ambition (F1)rather than from pure motives, thinking that they are causing me distress in my (F2)(C2)imprisonment.

18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in this I rejoice. But not only that, I also will rejoice,19 for I know that this will turn out for my (F1)deliverance (C1)through your (F2)prayers and the provision of (C2)the Spirit of Jesus Christ,20 according to my (C1)eager expectation and (C2)hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with (C3)all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be (C4)exalted in my body, (C5)whether by life or by death.

To Live Is Christ

21 For to me, (C1)to live is Christ, and to die is gain.22 (F1)But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean (C1)fruitful labor for me; and I do not know (F2)which to choose.23 But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the (C1)desire to depart and (C2)be with Christ, for that is very much better;24 yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sakes.25 (C1)Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy (F1)in the faith,26 so that your (C1)pride in Christ Jesus may be abundant because of me by my coming to you again.

27 Only conduct yourselves in a manner (C1)worthy of the (C2)gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear about you that you are (C3)standing firm in (C4)one spirit, with one (F1)mind (C5)striving together for the faith of the gospel;28 and in no way alarmed by your opponents—which is a (C1)sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and this too, from God.29 For to you (C1)it has been granted for Christ's sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to (C2)suffer on His behalf,30 experiencing the same (C1)conflict which (C2)you saw in me, and now hear to be in me.
