Ezekiel 20

Chapter 20

God's Dealings with Israel Rehearsed

¹ Now in the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth of the month, men from the ^(C1)elders of Israel came to inquire of the LORD, and they sat before me.² Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,³ "Son of man, speak to the elders of Israel and say to them, 'This is what the Lord ^(F1)GOD says: "Do you yourselves come to inquire of Me? As I live," declares the Lord GOD, "^(C1)I certainly will not be inquired of by you."'⁴ "Will you judge them, will you judge them, son of man? ^(C1)Make known to them the abominations of their fathers;⁵ and say to them, 'This is what the Lord GOD says: "On the day when I ^(C1)chose Israel and ^(F1)swore to the ^(F2)descendants of the house of Jacob and made Myself known to them in the land of Egypt, when I ^(F1)swore to them, saying, ^(C2)I am the LORD your God,⁶ on that day I swore to them, ^(C1)to bring them out from the land of Egypt into a land that I had ^(F1)selected for them, ^(C2)flowing with milk and honey, which is ^(C3)the glory of all the lands.⁷ "And I said to them, '^(C1)Throw away, each of you, the detestable things of his eyes, and ^(C2)do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt; ^(C3)I am the LORD your God.'

⁸ "But they ^(C1)rebelled against Me and were not willing to listen to Me; they did not throw away, each of them, the detestable things of their eyes, nor did they abandon the ^(C2)idols of Egypt. "Then I ^(F1)resolved to ^(C3)pour out My wrath on them, to ^(F2)use up My anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.⁹ "But I acted ^(C1)for the sake of My name, that it would ^(C2)not be defiled in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, in whose sight I made Myself known to them by bringing them out of the land of Egypt.¹⁰ "So I took them out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the ^(C1)wilderness.¹¹ "I gave them My ^(C1)statutes and informed them of My ordinances, ^(C2)which, if ^(F1)a person ^(F2)follows them, then he will live by them.¹² "Also I gave them My Sabbaths to be a ^(C1)sign between Me and them, so that they might know that I am the LORD who sanctifies them.¹³ "But the house of Israel ^(C1)rebelled against Me in the wilderness. They did not walk in My statutes and they rejected My ordinances, ^(C2)which, if ^(F1)a person ^(F2)follows them, then he will live by them; and they greatly profaned My ^(C3)Sabbaths. Then I ^(F3)resolved to ^(C4)pour out My wrath on them in the wilderness, to annihilate them.¹⁴ "But I acted for the sake of My name, so that it would not be defiled before the eyes of the nations, before whose eyes I had brought them out.¹⁵ "Also ^(C1)I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all the lands,¹⁶ because they rejected My ordinances, and as for My statutes, they did not walk in them; they also profaned My Sabbaths, because their ^(C1)heart continually followed their idols.¹⁷ "Yet My eye spared them rather than destroying them, and I did not bring about their ^(C1)annihilation in the wilderness.

¹⁸ "Instead, I said to their ^(F1)(C1)children in the wilderness, '^(C2)Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers or keep their ordinances or defile yourselves with their idols.¹⁹ '^(C1)I am the LORD your God; ^(C2)walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances and ^(F1)follow them.²⁰ '^(C1)Sanctify My Sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between Me and you, so that you may know that I am the LORD your God.'²¹ "But the ^(C1)children rebelled against Me; they did not walk in My statutes, nor were they careful to ^(F1)follow My ordinances which, if ^(F2)a person ^(F3)follows them, then he will live by them; they profaned My Sabbaths. So I ^(F4)resolved to pour out My wrath on them, to ^(F5)use up My anger against them in the wilderness.²² "But I ^(C1)withdrew My hand and acted ^(C2)for the sake of My name, so that it would not be defiled in the sight of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out.²³ "Also I swore to them in the wilderness that I would ^(C1)scatter them among the nations and disperse them among the lands,²⁴ because they had not ^(F1)complied with My ordinances, but had rejected My statutes and had profaned My Sabbaths, and ^(C1)their eyes were ^(F2)on the idols of their fathers.²⁵ "I also gave them statutes that were ^(C1)not good, and ordinances by which they could not live;²⁶ and I pronounced them ^(C1)unclean because of their gifts, in that they ^(C2)made all ^(F1)their firstborn pass through the fire so that I might make them desolate, in order that they might ^(C3)know that I am the LORD."'

²⁷ "Therefore ^(C1)speak to the house of Israel, son of man, and say to them, 'This is what the Lord GOD says: "Again, in this your fathers have ^(C2)blasphemed Me by ^(C3)being disloyal to Me.²⁸ "When I had ^(C1)brought them into the land which I swore to give to them, then they saw every ^(C2)high hill and every tree thick with branches, and there they offered their sacrifices and there they presented the provocation of their offering. There also they made their soothing aroma and there they poured out their drink offerings.²⁹ "Then I said to them, 'What is the high place to which you go?' So its name is called ^(F1)Bamah to this day."'³⁰ "Therefore, say to the house of Israel, 'This is what the Lord GOD says: "Will you defile yourselves in the way of your ^(C1)fathers and adulterously pursue their detestable things?³¹ "And ^(F1)when you offer your gifts, when you ^(C1)make your sons pass through the fire, you are defiling yourselves with all your idols to this day. So shall I be inquired of by you, house of Israel? As I live," declares the Lord GOD, "I certainly will not be inquired of by you.³² "And whatever ^(C1)comes ^(F1)into your mind certainly will not come about, when you say: 'We will be like the nations, like the families of the lands, ^(C2)serving wood and stone.'

God Will Restore Israel to Her Land

³³ "As I live," declares the Lord GOD, "with a mighty hand and with an ^(C1)outstretched arm and with wrath poured out, I assuredly shall be ^(C2)king over you.³⁴ "I will ^(C1)bring you out from the peoples and gather you from the lands where you are scattered, with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm and with ^(C2)wrath poured out;³⁵ and I will bring you into the ^(C1)wilderness of the peoples, and there I will enter into judgment with you face to face.³⁶ "Just as I ^(C1)entered into judgment with your fathers in the ^(C2)wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will enter into judgment with you," declares the Lord GOD.³⁷ "I will make you ^(C1)pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant;³⁸ and I will ^(C1)purge from you the rebels and those who revolt against Me; I will bring them out of the land where they reside, but they will ^(C2)not enter the ^(F1)land of Israel. So you will know that I am the LORD.

³⁹ "As for you, house of Israel," this is what the Lord GOD says: "^(C1)Go, serve, everyone of you his idols; ^(F1)but later you will certainly listen to Me, and My holy name you will no longer ^(C2)defile with your gifts and your idols.⁴⁰ "For on My holy mountain, on the high mountain of Israel," declares the Lord GOD, "there the entire house of Israel, ^(C1)all of them, will serve Me in the land; there I will ^(C2)accept them and there I will demand your contributions and the choicest of your gifts, with all your holy things.⁴¹ "^(F1)As a soothing aroma I will accept you when I ^(C1)bring you out from the peoples and gather you from the lands where you are scattered; and I will show Myself to be ^(C2)holy among you in the sight of the nations.⁴² "And ^(C1)you will know that I am the LORD, ^(C2)when I bring you into the land of Israel, into the ^(C3)land which I swore to give to your forefathers.⁴³ "And there you will ^(C1)remember your ways and all your deeds by which you have defiled yourselves; and you will ^(C2)loathe yourselves in your own ^(F1)sight for all the evil things that you have done.⁴⁴ "Then ^(C1)you will know that I am the LORD, when I have dealt with you ^(C2)in behalf of My name, not according to your evil ways or according to your corrupt deeds, house of Israel," declares the Lord GOD.'"

^45 (F1)Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying,⁴⁶ "Son of man, set your face toward the south, and speak prophetically against the ^(C1)south and ^(C2)prophesy against the ^(C3)forest ^(F1)land of the Negev,⁴⁷ and say to the forest of the Negev, 'Hear the word of the LORD: this is what the Lord GOD says: "Behold, I am going to ^(C1)kindle a fire in you, and it will consume every ^(F1)green tree in you, as well as every dry tree; the blazing flame will not go out and ^(F2)(C2)the entire surface from south to north will be scorched by it.⁴⁸ "And all ^(F1)mankind will see that I, the LORD, have kindled it; it will ^(C1)not go out."'"⁴⁹ Then I said, "Oh, Lord GOD! They are saying of me, 'Is he not just speaking in ^(C1)riddles?'"

Isaiah 49

Chapter 49

Salvation Reaches to the Ends of the Earth

¹ Listen to Me, you ^(C1)islands,
And pay attention, you peoples from afar.
^(C2)The LORD called Me from the womb;
From the ^(F1)body of My mother He named Me.

² He has made My ^(C1)mouth like a sharp sword,
In the ^(C2)shadow of His hand He has concealed Me;
And He has also made Me a sharpened ^(C3)arrow,
He has hidden Me in His quiver.

³ He said to Me, "^(C1)You are My Servant, Israel,
^(C2)In whom I will show My glory."

⁴ But I said, "I have ^(C1)labored in vain,
I have spent My strength for nothing and futility;
Nevertheless, the justice due to Me is with the LORD,
And My ^(C2)reward is with My God."

⁵ And now says ^(C1)the LORD, who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant,
To bring Jacob back to Him, so that ^(C2)Israel might be gathered to Him
(For I am ^(C3)honored in the sight of the LORD,
And My God is My ^(C4)strength),

⁶ He says, "It is too ^(F1)small a thing that You should be My Servant
To raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the ^(C1)protected ones of Israel;
I will also make You a ^(C2)light ^(F2)of the nations
So that My salvation may ^(F3)reach to the ^(C3)end of the earth."

⁷ This is what the LORD, the ^(C1)Redeemer of Israel and its Holy One,
Says to the ^(F1)(C2)despised One,
To the One abhorred by the nation,
To the Servant of rulers:
"^(C3)Kings will see and arise,
Princes will also ^(C4)bow down,
Because of the LORD who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel who has chosen You."

⁸ This is what the LORD says:
"At a ^(C1)favorable time I answered You,
And on a day of salvation I helped You;
And I will ^(C2)watch over You and ^(C3)make You a covenant of the people,
To ^(F1)(C4)restore the land, to give as inheritances the deserted hereditary lands;

⁹ Saying to those who are ^(C1)bound, '^(F1)Go free,'
To those who are in darkness, 'Show yourselves.'
They will feed along the roads,
And their pasture will be on all ^(C2)bare heights.

¹⁰ "They will ^(C1)not hunger or thirst,
Nor will the scorching ^(C2)heat or sun strike them down;
For ^(C3)He who has compassion on them will ^(C4)lead them,
And He will guide them to ^(C5)springs of water.

¹¹ "I will make all ^(C1)My mountains a road,
And My ^(C2)highways will be raised up.

¹² "Behold, these will come ^(C1)from afar;
And behold, these will come from the ^(C2)north and from the west,
And these from the land of Aswan."

^13 (C1)Shout for joy, you heavens! And rejoice, you earth!
Break forth into joyful shouting, mountains!
For the ^(C2)LORD has comforted His people
And will ^(C3)have compassion on His afflicted.

Promise to Zion

¹⁴ But Zion said, "The LORD has abandoned me,
And the Lord has forgotten me."

¹⁵ "Can a woman forget her nursing child
And have no compassion on the son of her womb?
Even these may forget, but ^(C1)I will not forget you.

¹⁶ "Behold, I have ^(C1)inscribed you on the palms of My hands;
Your ^(C2)walls are continually before Me.

¹⁷ "Your ^(F1)builders hurry;
Your ^(C1)destroyers and devastators
Will leave you.

¹⁸ "^(C1)Raise your eyes and look around;
^(C2)All of them gather together, ^(C3)they come to you.
^(C4)As I live," declares the LORD,
"You will certainly ^(C5)put them all on as ^(F1)jewelry and bind them on as a bride.

¹⁹ "For ^(C1)your ruins and deserted places and your destroyed land—
Now you will certainly be ^(C2)too cramped for the inhabitants,
And those who ^(C3)swallowed you will be far away.

²⁰ "The ^(C1)children ^(F1)you lost will yet say in your ears,
'The place is too cramped for me;
Make room for me that I may live here.'

²¹ "Then you will ^(C1)say in your heart,
'Who has fathered these for me,
Since I have been bereaved of my children
And ^(C2)cannot conceive, and I am an ^(C3)exile, and a wanderer?
And who has raised these?
Behold, I was ^(C4)left alone;
^(F1)(C5)Where are these from?'"

²² This is what the Lord ^(F1)GOD says:

"Behold, I will lift up My hand to the nations
And set up My ^(C1)flag to the peoples;
And they will ^(C2)bring your sons ^(F2)in their arms,
And your daughters will be carried on their shoulders.

²³ "^(C1)Kings will be your guardians,
And their princesses your nurses.
They will ^(C2)bow down to you with their faces to the ground
And ^(C3)lick the dust from your feet;
And you will ^(C4)know that I am the LORD;
Those who hopefully ^(C5)wait for Me will ^(C6)not be put to shame.

²⁴ "^(C1)Can the prey be taken from a mighty man,
Or the captives of ^(F1)a tyrant be rescued?"
