Psalms 4,5,6

Psalm 4[a]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of David.

1 Answer me(a) when I call to you,
     my righteous God.
Give me relief from my distress;(b)
     have mercy(c) on me and hear my prayer.(d)

2 How long will you people turn my glory(e) into shame?(f)
     How long will you love delusions and seek false gods[b]?[c](g)
3 Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant(h) for himself;
     the Lord hears(i) when I call to him.

4 Tremble and[d] do not sin;(j)
     when you are on your beds,(k)
     search your hearts and be silent.
5 Offer the sacrifices of the righteous
     and trust in the Lord .(l)

6 Many, Lord , are asking, "Who will bring us prosperity?"
     Let the light of your face shine on us.(m)
7 Fill my heart(n) with joy(o)
     when their grain and new wine(p) abound.

8 In peace(q) I will lie down and sleep,(r)
     for you alone, Lord ,
     make me dwell in safety.(s)

Psalm 5[a]

For the director of music. For pipes. A psalm of David.

1 Listen(a) to my words, Lord ,
     consider my lament.(b)
2 Hear my cry for help,(c)
     my King and my God,(d)
     for to you I pray.

3 In the morning,(e) Lord , you hear my voice;
     in the morning I lay my requests before you
     and wait expectantly.(f)
4 For you are not a God who is pleased with wickedness;
     with you, evil people(g) are not welcome.
5 The arrogant(h) cannot stand(i)
     in your presence.
You hate(j) all who do wrong;
6       you destroy those who tell lies.(k)
The bloodthirsty and deceitful
     you, Lord , detest.
7 But I, by your great love,
     can come into your house;
in reverence(l) I bow down(m)
     toward your holy temple.(n)

8 Lead me, Lord , in your righteousness(o)
     because of my enemies—
     make your way straight(p) before me.
9 Not a word from their mouth can be trusted;
     their heart is filled with malice.
Their throat is an open grave;(q)
     with their tongues they tell lies.(r)
10 Declare them guilty, O God!
     Let their intrigues be their downfall.
Banish them for their many sins,(s)
     for they have rebelled(t) against you.
11 But let all who take refuge in you be glad;
     let them ever sing for joy.(u)
Spread your protection over them,
     that those who love your name(v) may rejoice in you.(w)

12 Surely, Lord , you bless the righteous;(x)
     you surround them(y) with your favor as with a shield.(z)

Psalm 6[a]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. According to sheminith.[b] A psalm of David.

1  Lord , do not rebuke me in your anger(a)
     or discipline me in your wrath.
2 Have mercy on me,(b) Lord , for I am faint;(c)
     heal me,(d) Lord , for my bones are in agony.(e)
3 My soul is in deep anguish.(f)
     How long,(g) Lord , how long?

4 Turn,(h) Lord , and deliver me;
     save me because of your unfailing love.(i)
5 Among the dead no one proclaims your name.
     Who praises you from the grave?(j)

6 I am worn out(k) from my groaning.(l)

All night long I flood my bed with weeping(m)
     and drench my couch with tears.(n)
7 My eyes grow weak(o) with sorrow;
     they fail because of all my foes.

8 Away from me,(p) all you who do evil,(q)
     for the Lord has heard my weeping.
9 The Lord has heard my cry for mercy;(r)
     the Lord accepts my prayer.
10 All my enemies will be overwhelmed with shame and anguish;(s)
     they will turn back and suddenly be put to shame.(t)

John 7:1-27

Chapter 7

Jesus Goes to the Festival of Tabernacles

1 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want[a] to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders(a) there were looking for a way to kill him.(b) 2 But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles(c) was near, 3 Jesus' brothers(d) said to him, "Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. 4 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world." 5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him.(e)

6 Therefore Jesus told them, "My time(f) is not yet here; for you any time will do. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me(g) because I testify that its works are evil.(h) 8 You go to the festival. I am not[b] going up to this festival, because my time(i) has not yet fully come." 9 After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.

10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret. 11 Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus(j) and asking, "Where is he?"

12 Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, "He is a good man."

Others replied, "No, he deceives the people."(k) 13 But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.(l)

Jesus Teaches at the Festival

14 Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach.(m) 15 The Jews(n) there were amazed and asked, "How did this man get such learning(o) without having been taught?"(p)

16 Jesus answered, "My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me.(q) 17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out(r) whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. 18 Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory,(s) but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. 19 Has not Moses given you the law?(t) Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?"(u)

20 "You are demon-possessed,"(v) the crowd answered. "Who is trying to kill you?"

21 Jesus said to them, "I did one miracle,(w) and you are all amazed. 22 Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision(x) (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs),(y) you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. 23 Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man's whole body on the Sabbath? 24 Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly."(z)

Division Over Who Jesus Is

25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill?(aa) 26 Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities(ab) really concluded that he is the Messiah?(ac) 27 But we know where this man is from;(ad) when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from."
