Contextual Overview

1 Then Jesus left that place and went into the area of Judea and across the Jordan River. Again, crowds came to him, and he taught them as he usually did. 2 Some Pharisees came to Jesus and tried to trick him. They asked, "Is it right for a man to divorce his wife?" 3 Jesus answered, "What did Moses command you to do?" 4 They said, "Moses allowed a man to write out divorce papers and send her away." 5 Jesus said, "Moses wrote that command for you because you were stubborn. 6 But when God made the world, ‘he made them male and female.' 7 ‘So a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, 8 and the two will become one body.' So there are not two, but one. 9 God has joined the two together, so no one should separate them." 10 Later, in the house, his followers asked Jesus again about the question of divorce.

They will destroy the Assyrians with their swords; they will conquer the land of Assyria with their swords drawn. They will rescue us from the Assyrians when they come into our land, when they walk over our borders.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And the twain shall be one flesh,.... This is the remaining part of the citation out of Genesis 2:24;

Genesis 2:24- :;

so then they are no more twain; but one flesh; as Adam and Eve were both by creation and marriage: and so two persons, a man and woman, being lawfully married together, become one flesh, or "one body", as the Arabic and Persic versions render the phrase; and therefore the wife is to be loved by the husband as his own body, and from whom there should be no separation, until death, but in case of adultery;

Genesis 2:24- :.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

See this question about divorce explained in the notes at Matthew 19:1-12.

Mark 10:12

And if a woman shall put away her husband - It would seem, from this, that a woman, among the Jews, had the power of separating herself from her husband, yet this right is not given her by the law of Moses. There is not, however, any positive evidence that females often claimed or exercised this right. Cases had occurred, indeed, in which it had been done. The wife of Herod had rejected her former husband and married Herod. And though instances of this kind “might” have been attempted to be defended by the example of Pagans, yet our Saviour was desirous of showing them that it did not free them from the charge of adultery. The apostles were going forth to teach Pagan nations, and it was proper for Christ to teach them how to act in such cases, and to show them that they were cases of real adultery.
