我 们 终 日 因 神 夸 耀 , 还 要 永 远 称 谢 你 的 名 。 ( 细 拉 )
Contextual Overview
For the director of music. A maskil of the sons of Korah.
God, we have heard about you. Our ancestors told us what you did in their days, in days long ago. 2 With your power you forced the nations out of the land and placed our ancestors here. You destroyed those other nations, but you made our ancestors grow strong. 3 It wasn't their swords that took the land. It wasn't their power that gave them victory. But it was your great power and strength. You were with them because you loved them. 4 My God, you are my King. Your commands led Jacob's people to victory. 5 With your help we pushed back our enemies. In your name we trampled those who came against us. 6 I don't trust my bow to help me, and my sword can't save me. 7 You saved us from our foes, and you made our enemies ashamed. 8 We will praise God every day; we will praise your name forever. They said to each other, "We are being punished for what we did to our brother. We saw his trouble, and he begged us to save him, but we refused to listen. That is why we are in this trouble now."
When they stopped for the night, one of the brothers opened his sack to get food for his donkey. Then he saw his money in the top of the sack.
As the brothers emptied their sacks, each of them found his money in his sack. When they and their father saw it, they were afraid.
Take twice as much money with you this time, and take back the money that was returned to you in your sacks last time. Maybe it was a mistake.
But the brothers said to the servant, "Why do you say these things? We would not do anything like that!
The servant said, "We will do as you say, but only the man who has taken the cup will become my slave. The rest of you may go free."
Then every brother quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it.
Then you said to us, ‘Bring that brother to me. I want to see him.'
And we said to you, ‘That young boy cannot leave his father, because if he leaves him, his father would die.'
"You must not steal.
Gill's Notes on the Bible
In God we boast all the day long,.... Or, as the Targum, "in the word of the Lord", in Christ, who is God over all, and who of God is made to his church and people wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption; so that there is always matter of glorying and boasting in him;
and praise thy name for ever and ever; in this world, as long as life continues; and in the other world to all eternity; both for the works of providence and of grace; for deliverances commanded, and for salvation from all enemies wrought out.
Selah; of this word :-.
Barnes' Notes on the Bible
In God we boast all the day long - That is, continually or constantly. It is not a momentary or temporary expression of our feelings, but it is our habitual and constant employment. We have no other ground of reliance, and we express that reliance constantly. The word rendered “boast” here rather more literally means praise: “In God we praise all the day long.” The idea is, that he was their only ground of confidence. They ascribed all their former successes to him; they had no other reliance now.
And praise thy name for ever - We do it now; we shall never cease to do it.
Selah - On the meaning of this word, see the notes at Psalms 3:2.
Clarke's Notes on the Bible
Verse Psalms 44:8. In God we boast — We have told the heathen how great and powerful our God is. If thou do not deliver us by thy mighty power, they will not believe our report, but consider that we are held in bondage by the superior strength of their gods.
