When anyone showed up with a case to bring to the king for a decision, Absalom would call him over and say, "Where do you hail from?"

And the answer would come, "Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel."

Absalom's Conspiracy

1 Now it came about after this that (C1)Absalom provided for himself a chariot and horses and fifty men as runners before him.2 He would get up early and stand beside the road leading to the city gate.(C1) Whenever anyone had a grievance to bring before the king for settlement, Absalom called out to him and asked, “What city are you from?” If he replied, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel,” 2 Avshalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man had a suit which should come to the king for judgment, then Avshalom called to him, and said, Of what city are you? He said, Your servant is of one of the tribes of Yisra'el.

2 And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel. 2 Absalom used to rise early in the morning, and he stood beside[a] the road at the gate; anyone[b] who had a legal dispute to bring to the king for judgment Absalom would call to him and say, "Where are you from?"[c] And he would say, "Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel." 2 And Absalom used to rise early and stand beside (b)the way of the gate. And when any man had a dispute to come before the king for judgment, Absalom would call to him and say, "From what city are you?" And when he said, "Your servant is of such and such a tribe in Israel," 2 Absalom would get up early and stand near the city gate.[a] Anyone who had a problem for the king to settle would come here. When someone came, Absalom would call out and say, "What city are you from?"

The person would answer, "I'm from one of the tribes of Israel." 2 Now Absalom used to get up early and stand beside the road that led to the city gate. Whenever anyone came by who had a complaint to bring to the king for arbitration, Absalom would call out to him, "What city are you from?" The person would answer, "I, your servant, am from one of the tribes of Israel." 2 He would get up early and (C1)stand beside the road to the gate of the city, where court was held; and when any man who had a dispute came to the king for judgment, Absalom would call to him, "From what city are you?" And he would say, "Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel."2 And Absalom used to rise early and (C1)stand beside the road to the gate; and when any man who had a lawsuit was to come before the king for judgment, Absalom would call out to him and say, "From what city are you?" And he would say, "Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel."2 And Absalom rose vp early, & stoode hard by the entring in of the gate: and euery man that had any matter, & came to the King for iudgement, him did Absalom call vnto him, and sayde, Of what citie art thou? And he answered, Thy seruant is of one of the tribes of Israel.2 And Absalom used to rise early and (C1)stand beside the way to the gate; and when any man had a case to come to the king for judgment, Absalom would call to him and say, "From what city are you?" And he would say, "Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel." 2 He would get up early each morning and wait by the side of the road that led to the city gate.[a] Anyone who had a complaint to bring to King David would have to go that way, and Absalom would ask each of them, "Where are you from?"

If they said, "I'm from a tribe in the north," 2 He would get up early and stand by the road leading to the city gate; and if someone had a case that was to come before the king for judgment, Avshalom would call to him and ask, "What city are you from?" and he would answer, "Your servant is from the such-and-such tribe in Isra'el."

2 And Absalom rose early, and stood beside the way of the gate; and it was so, that when any man who had a controversy had to come to the king for judgment, then Absalom called him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel. 2 Absalom would get up early and stand near the gate.[a] He would watch for anyone with problems who was going to King David for judgment. Then Absalom would talk to them and say, "What city are you from?" They would say they were from such and such tribe in Israel.2 And Absalom rose up early and stood beside the kings gate; and it was so that when any man had a case to be tried before the king, then Absalom called him to him, and said, Of what city are you? And he said, Your servant is of one of the tribes of Israel. 2 He would get up early and go and stand by the road at the city gate. Whenever someone came there with a dispute that he wanted the king to settle, Absalom would call him over and ask him where he was from. And after the man had told him what tribe he was from, 2 And Absalom rose up and stood by the side of the way of the gate. And it happened that every man who had a cause to come to the king for judgment, Absalom called to him and said, Of what city are you? And he said, Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.2 And Absalo gat him vp allwaye early in the mornynge, and stode in the waye by the porte: and whan eny man had a matter which shulde come to the kynge for iudgment, Absalom called vnto him and sayde: Of what cite art thou? Yf he sayde then: thy seruaunt is of one of the trybes of Israel, 2 And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that, when any man had a suit which should come to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel. 2 And Absalom got up early, morning after morning, and took his place at the side of the public meeting-place: and when any man had a cause which had to come to the king to be judged, then Absalom, crying out to him, said, What is your town? and he would say, Your servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.2 And Absalom rose vp early, and stoode in the place of the entring in of the gate: And euery man that had any matter and came to the king for iudgement, him did Absalom cal vnto him, and sayde: Of what citie art thou? He aunswered: Thy seruaunt is of one of the tribes of Israel.2 And Absalom used to rise up early, and stand beside the way of the gate; and it was so, that when any man had a suit which should come to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said: 'Of what city art thou?' And he said: 'Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.'2 And Absalom rose vp earely, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controuersie, came to the king for iudgment, then Absalom called vnto him, and said, Of what citie art thou? And he said, Thy seruant is of one of the tribes of Israel. 2 And Abessalom rose early, and stood by the side of the way of the gate: and it came to pass that every man who had a cause, came to the king for judgment, and Abessalom cried to him, and said to him, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel. 2 And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man had a suit which should come to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel. 2 He would get up early and stand beside the road leading to the city gate. Whenever anyone had a grievance to bring before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out and ask, “What city are you from?” And if he replied, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel,”2 And Absolon roos eerli, and stood bisidis the entryng of the yate in the weie; and Absolon clepide to hym ech man, that hadde a cause that he schulde come to the doom of the kyng, and Absolon seide, Of what citee art thou? Which answeride, and seide, Of o lynage of Israel Y am, thi seruaunt.2 and Absalom hath risen early, and stood by the side of the way of the gate, and it cometh to pass, every man who hath a pleading to come unto the king for judgment, that Absalom calleth unto him, and saith, `Of what city [art] thou?' and he saith, `Of one of the tribes of Israel [is] thy servant.'2 And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that, when any man had a suit which should come to the king for judgment, then Absalom called to him, and said, Of what city are you? And he said, Your slave is of one of the tribes of Israel.2 And Absalom rose early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was [so], that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called to him, and said, Of what city [art] thou? And he said, Thy servant [is] one of the tribes of Israel.2 Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man had a suit which should come to the king for judgment, then Absalom called to him, and said, Of what city are you? He said, Your servant is of one of the tribes of Israel. 2 Now Absalom would rise early and stand beside the way to the gate. So it was, whenever anyone who had a lawsuit came to the king for a decision, that Absalom would call to him and say, "What city are you from?" And he would say, "Your servant is from such and such a tribe of Israel." 2 He got up early every morning and went out to the gate of the city. When people brought a case to the king for judgment, Absalom would ask where in Israel they were from, and they would tell him their tribe. 2 He used to get up early and stand beside the way to the gate. When any man had a problem to be decided upon by the king, Absalom would call to him and say, "What city are you from?" And he would answer, "Your servant is from one of the families of Israel." 2 Absalom used to rise early and stand beside the road into the gate; and when anyone brought a suit before the king for judgment, Absalom would call out and say, "From what city are you?" When the person said, "Your servant is of such and such a tribe in Israel," 2 And Absolom used to rise up early, and take his stand beside the way of the gate, - and so it was - when any man who had a controversy would come unto the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said: Of what city, art, thou? And he said, Of one of the tribes of Israel, is thy servant. And Absolom said unto him,2 And Absalom rising up early stood by the entrance of the gate, and when any man had business to come to the king’s judgment, Absalom called him to him, and said: Of what city art thou? He answered, and said: Thy servant is of such tribe of Israel.2 And Ab'salom used to rise early and stand beside the way of the gate; and when any man had a suit to come before the king for judgment, Ab'salom would call to him, and say, "From what city are you?" And when he said, "Your servant is of such and such a tribe in Israel,"2 and Absalom has risen early, and stood by the side of the way of the gate, and it comes to pass, every man who has a pleading to come to the king for judgment, that Absalom calls to him and says, "Of what city [are] you?" And he says, "Your servant [is] of one of the tribes of Israel."2 Absalom used to rise early and (C1)stand beside the way to the gate; and when any man had a suit to come to the king for judgment, Absalom would call to him and say, "From what city are you?" And he would say, "Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel."3 Absalom said to him, “Look, your claims are good and right, but the king does not have anyone to listen to you.” 3 Avshalom said to him, Behold, your matters are good and right; but there is no man deputized of the king to hear you.

3 And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee. 3 Then Absalom would say to him, "Look, your case is good and right, but for you there is no hearing with the king." 3 Absalom would say to him, "See, your claims are good and right, but there is no man designated by the king to hear you."

3 Then Absalom would say, "Look, your claims are right, but the king has no one to listen to you." 3 Absalom would then say to him, "Look, your claims are legitimate and appropriate. But there is no representative of the king who will listen to you." 3 Then Absalom would say to him, "(C1)See, your claims are good and right, but there is no man appointed as the king's agent to listen to you."3 Then Absalom would say to him, "See, (C1)your (F1)claims are good and right, but you have no one to listen to you on the part of the king."3 Then Absalom said vnto him, See, thy matters are good and righteous, but there is no man deputed of the King to heare thee.3 Then Absalom would say to him, "See, (C1)your words are good and right, but no man listens to you on the part of the king." 3 Absalom would say, "You deserve to win your case. It's too bad the king doesn't have anyone to hear complaints like yours. 3 Avshalom would say to him, "Look, your cause is good and just; but the king hasn't deputized anyone to hear your case."

3 And Absalom said to him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man to hear thee [appointed] by the king. 3 Then Absalom would say, "Look, you are right, but King David will not listen to you."3 And Absalom said to him, I see your arguments are good and just; but there is no man deputed by the king to hear you. 3 Absalom would say, "Look, the law is on your side, but there is no representative of the king to hear your case." 3 And Absalom said to him, Behold, your matters are good and right. And there is no listener to you from the king.3 then sayde Absalom vnto him: Beholde, thy matter is righte and plaine: but there is noman appoynted ye of the kynge to heare the. 3 And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee. 3 And Absalom would say to him, See, your cause is true and right; but no man has been named by the king to give you a hearing.3 And Absalom said vnto him: See, thy matters are good and righteous, but there is no man [deputed] of the king to heare thee.3 And Absalom said unto him: 'See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee.'3 And Absalom said vnto him, See, thy matters are good & right, but there is no man deputed of the king to heare thee. 3 And Abessalom said to him, See, thy affairs are right and clear, yet thou hast no one appointed of the king to hear thee. 3 And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee. 3 Absalom would say, “Look, your claims are good and right, but the king has no deputy to hear you.”3 And Absolon answeride to hym, Thi wordis semen to me good and iust, but noon is ordeyned of the kyng to here thee. And Absolon seide, Who schal ordeyne me iuge on the lond,3 And Absalom saith unto him, `See, thy matters [are] good and straightforward -- and there is none hearkening to thee from the king.'3 And Absalom said to him, See, your matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear you.3 And Absalom said to him, See, thy matters [are] good and right; but [there is] no man [deputed] by the king to hear thee.3 Absalom said to him, Behold, your matters are good and right; but there is no man deputized of the king to hear you. 3 Then Absalom would say to him, "Look, your case is good and right; but there is no deputy of the king to hear you." 3 Then Absalom would say, "You've really got a strong case here! It's too bad the king doesn't have anyone to hear it. 3 Then Absalom would say to him, "Your side of the problem is good and right. But there is no man to listen to you for the king." 3 Absalom would say, "See, your claims are good and right; but there is no one deputed by the king to hear you." 3 See! thy cause, is good and right, - but, to hear it, thou hast no one, from the king.3 And Absalom answered him: Thy words seem to me good and just. But there is no man appointed by the king to hear thee. And Absalom said:3 Ab'salom would say to him, "See, your claims are good and right; but there is no man deputed by the king to hear you."3 And Absalom says to him, "See, your matters [are] good and straightforward—and there is none listening to you from the king."3-6 Then Absalom would say, "Look, you've got a strong case; but the king isn't going to listen to you." Then he'd say, "Why doesn't someone make me a judge for this country? Anybody with a case could bring it to me and I'd settle things fair and square." Whenever someone would treat him with special honor, he'd shrug it off and treat him like an equal, making him feel important. Absalom did this to everyone who came to do business with the king and stole the hearts of everyone in Israel.3 Then Absalom would say to him, "See, (C1)your (F1)claims are good and right, but no man listens to you on the part of the king."4 He added, “If only someone would appoint me judge in the land. Then anyone who had a grievance or dispute could come to me, and I would make sure he received justice.” 4 Avshalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who has any suit or cause might come to me, and I would do him justice!

4 Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice! 4 Then Absalom would say, "Oh, that someone would[d] appoint me as judge in the land, that anyone[e] might come to me who had a legal dispute or a case, and I would give him justice." 4 Then Absalom would say, (c)"Oh that I were judge in the land! Then every man with a dispute or cause might come to me, and I would give him justice." 4 Absalom would also say, "I wish someone would make me judge in this land! Then people with problems could come to me, and I could help them get justice." 4 Absalom would then say, "If only they would make me a judge in the land! Then everyone who had a judicial complaint could come to me and I would make sure he receives a just settlement."4 Moreover Absalom would say, "(C1)Oh, that I were appointed judge in the land! Then every man who had a dispute could come to me and I would get justice for him."4 Moreover, Absalom would say, "(C1)Oh that someone would appoint me judge in the land, then every man who has a lawsuit or claim could come to me, and I would give him justice!"4 Absalom sayd moreouer, Oh that I were made Iudge in the lande, that euery man which hath any matter of controuersie, might come to me, that I might do him iustice.4 Then Absalom would say, "(C1)Oh that one would appoint me judge in the land, then every man who has any case or judgment could come to me and I would justify him." 4 I wish someone would make me the judge around here! I would be fair to everyone." 4 Then Avshalom would continue, "Now if I were made judge in the land, anyone with a suit or other cause could come to me, and I would see that he gets justice!"

4 And Absalom said, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who has any controversy and cause might come to me, and I would do him justice!

4 Absalom would also say, "Oh, I wish someone would make me a judge in this country! Then I could help everyone who comes to me with a problem. I would help them get a fair solution to their problem."4 Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made a judge in the land, that every man who has a lawsuit or a cause might come to me, and I would do him justice! 4 And he would add, "How I wish I were a judge! Then anyone who had a dispute or a claim could come to me, and I would give him justice." 4 And Absalom said, Who shall make me a judge in the land, that every man who has a dispute, I will then declare him right, even with justice?4 And Absalom sayde: O who setteth me to be iudge in ye londe, that euery man which hath a plee or matter to do in ye lawe, might come to me, that I might helpe him to right 4 Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice! 4 And more than this, Absalom said, If only I was made judge in the land, so that every man who has any cause or question might come to me, and I would give a right decision for him!4 Absalom sayde moreouer: Oh, that I were made iudge in the land, that euery man which hath any plea and matter in the lawe, might come to me, and that I might do him iustice.4 Absalom said moreover: 'Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice!'4 Absalom said moreouer, Oh that I were made Iudge in the land, that euery man which hath any suit or cause, might come vnto me, and I would do him iustice. 4 And Abessalom said, O that one would make me a judge in the land; then every man who had a dispute or a cause would come to me, and I would judge him! 4 Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice! 4 And he would add, “If only someone would appoint me judge in the land, then everyone with a grievance or dispute could come to me, and I would give him justice.”4 that alle men that han cause come to me, and Y deme iustly?4 And Absalom saith, `Who doth make me a judge in the land, that unto me doth come every man who hath a plea and judgment? -- then I have declared him righteous.'4 Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who has any suit or cause might come to me, and I would do him justice!4 Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who hath any suit or cause might come to me, and I would do him justice!4 Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who has any suit or cause might come to me, and I would do him justice! 4 Moreover Absalom would say, "Oh, that I were made judge in the land, and everyone who has any suit or cause would come to me; then I would give him justice." 4 I wish I were the judge. Then everyone could bring their cases to me for judgment, and I would give them justice!" 4 And Absalom would say, "If only I were chosen to be the one to be judge in the land! Then every man who has a problem could come to me. And I would do for him what is right and fair." 4 Absalom said moreover, "If only I were judge in the land! Then all who had a suit or cause might come to me, and I would give them justice." 4 And Absalom said, Oh would that I were appointed to judge in the land! that, unto me, might come every man having a complaint or a defence, then would I see him righted.4 O that they would make me judge over the land, that all that have business might come to me, that I might do them justice.4 Ab'salom said moreover, "Oh that I were judge in the land! Then every man with a suit or cause might come to me, and I would give him justice."4 And Absalom says, "Who makes me judge in the land, that every man who has a plea and judgment comes to me? Then I have declared him righteous."4 Moreover, Absalom would say, "(C1)Oh that one would appoint me judge in the land, then every man who has any suit or cause could come to me and I would give him justice."5 When a person approached to pay homage to him, Absalom reached out his hand, took hold of him, and kissed him.(C1) 5 It was so, that when any man came near to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took hold of him, and kissed him.

5 And it was so, that when any man came nigh to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him. 5 It happened whenever anyone drew near to do obeisance to him, that he would stretch his hand and take hold of him and kiss him. 5 And whenever a man came near to pay homage to him, he would put out his hand and take hold of him and kiss him.

5 People would come near Absalom to bow to him. When they did, Absalom would reach out his hand and take hold of them and kiss them.

5 When someone approached to bow before him, Absalom would extend his hand and embrace him and kiss him. 5 And whenever a man approached to bow down before him, he would put out his hand, take hold of him, and (C1)kiss him.5 And whenever a man approached to prostrate himself before him, he would put out his hand and take hold of him and (C1)kiss him.5 And when any man came neere to him, and did him obeisance, he put forth his hand, & tooke him, and kissed him.5 And when a man came near to prostrate himself before him, he would send forth his hand and take hold of him and (C1)kiss him.

5 Whenever anyone would come to Absalom and start bowing down, he would reach out and hug and kiss them. 5 Moreover, whenever any man came close to prostrate himself before him, he would put out his hand, take hold of him and kiss him.

5 And it was so, that when any man came near to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.

5 And if anyone came to Absalom and started to bow down to him, Absalom would treat him like a close friend—he would reach out and touch him and kiss him.5 And whenever a man arose to do him obeisance, he held him by his hand and kissed him. 5 When the man would approach Absalom to bow down before him, Absalom would reach out, take hold of him, and kiss him. 5 And it happened, when a man drew near to bow himself to him, he put out his hand and laid hold on him, and gave him a kiss.5 And whan eny man came to him to do worshippe & to do him obeisaunce, he put forth his hade, and helde him & kyssed him. 5 And it was so, that, when any man came nigh to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took hold of him, and kissed him. 5 And if any man came near to give him honour, he took him by the hand and gave him a kiss.5 And when any man came nye to him, and dyd him obeysaunce, he put foorth his hande, and toke him to him, and kissed him.5 And it was so, that when any man came nigh to prostrate himself before him, he put forth his hand, and took hold of him, and kissed him.5 And it was so, that when any man came nigh to him, to doe him obeisance, he put foorth his hand, and tooke him, and kissed him. 5 And it came to pass when a man came near to do him obeisance, that he stretched out his hand, and took hold of him, and kissed him. 5 And it was so, that when any man came nigh to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took hold of him, and kissed him. 5 Also, when anyone approached to bow down to him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him, and kiss him.5 But whanne a man cam to Absolon to greete hym, he helde forth the hond, and took, and kisside that man;5 And it hath come to pass, in the drawing nearing of any one to bow himself to him, that he hath put forth his hand, and laid hold on him, and given a kiss to him;5 And it was so, that, when any man came near to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took hold of him, and kissed him.5 And it was [so], that when any man came nigh [to him] to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.5 It was so, that when any man came near to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took hold of him, and kissed him. 5 And so it was, whenever anyone came near to bow down to him, that he would put out his hand and take him and kiss him.

5 When people tried to bow before him, Absalom wouldn't let them. Instead, he took them by the hand and kissed them. 5 When a man came near to put his face to the ground in front of him, Absalom would put out his hand and take hold of him and kiss him. 5 Whenever people came near to do obeisance to him, he would put out his hand and take hold of them, and kiss them. 5 Moreover, so it used to be, that, when any man came near to do him homage, he would put forth his hand, and lay hold of him, and kiss him.5 Moreover when any man came to him to salute him, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.5 And whenever a man came near to do obeisance to him, he would put out his hand, and take hold of him, and kiss him.5 And it has come to pass, in the drawing near of anyone to bow himself to him, that he has put forth his hand, and laid hold on him, and given a kiss to him;5 And when a man came near to prostrate himself before him, he would put out his hand and take hold of him and (C1)kiss him.6 Absalom did this to all the Israelites who came to the king for a settlement.
