Contextual Overview

16Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters; and they came and drew water [from the well where Moses was resting] and filled the troughs to water their father's flock. 17Then shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses stood up and helped them and watered their flock. 18When they came to Reuel (Jethro) their father, he said, "How is it that you have come back so soon today?" 19They said, "An Egyptian saved us from the shepherds. He even drew water [from the well] for us and watered the flock." 20Then he said to his daughters, "Where is he? Why have you left the man behind? Invite him to have something to eat."21Moses was willing to remain with the man, and he gave Moses his daughter Zipporah [to be his wife]. 22She gave birth to a son, and he named him Gershom (stranger); for he said, "I have been a stranger in a foreign land."

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And he said unto his daughters, and where is he?.... By the account Reuel's daughters gave of Moses, of his courage and humanity, he was very desirous of seeing him:

why [is it] that ye have left the man? behind them at the well, and had not brought him along with them; he seemed to be displeased, and chides them, and tacitly suggests that they were rude and ungrateful not to ask a stranger, and one that had been so kind to them, to come with them and refresh himself:

call him, that he may eat bread; take meat with them, bread being put for all provisions.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Exodus 2:20. That he may eat bread. — That he may be entertained, and receive refreshment to proceed on his journey. Bread, among the Hebrews, was used to signify all kinds of food commonly used for the support of man's life.
