THE MESSAGE
People Who Love Listening to Lies God 's Message came to me: "Son of man, preach against the prophets of Israel who are making things up out of their own heads and calling it ‘prophesying.' "Preach to them the real thing. Tell them, ‘Listen to God's Message!' God , the Master, pronounces doom on the empty-headed prophets who do their own thing and know nothing of what's going on! Your prophets, Israel, are like jackals scavenging through the ruins. They haven't lifted a finger to repair the defenses of the city and have risked nothing to help Israel stand on God 's Day of Judgment. All they do is fantasize comforting illusions and preach lying sermons. They say ‘ God says...' when God hasn't so much as breathed in their direction. And yet they stand around thinking that something they said is going to happen.

Contextual Overview

1And the word of the LORD came to me saying, 2"Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel who prophesy, and say to those who prophesy from their own inspiration, 'Hear the word of the LORD! 3'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Woe (judgment is coming) to the foolish prophets who are following their own spirit [claiming to have seen things] but have [in fact] seen nothing. 4"O Israel, your prophets have been like foxes among the ruins. 5"You have not gone up into the gaps or breaches, nor built the wall around the house of Israel that it might stand in the battle on the day of the LORD. 6"They have seen falsehood and lying divination, saying, 'The LORD says,' but the LORD has not sent them. Yet they hope and make men to hope for the confirmation of their word.7"Did you not see (make up) a false vision and speak a lying divination when you said, 'The LORD declares,' but it is not I who have spoken?"'" 8Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD, "Because you have spoken empty and delusive words and have seen lies, therefore behold, I am against you," says the Lord God. 9"So My hand will be against the [counterfeit] prophets who see (make up) empty and delusive visions and who give lying prophecies. They will have no place in the [secret] council of My people, nor will they be recorded in the register of the house of Israel, nor will they enter into the land of Israel, that you may know [without any doubt] that I am the Lord GOD.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

They have seen vanity, and lying divination,.... The visions the false prophets pretended to see were nothing but the fruit of their own fancies and imaginations, and had nothing real in them; and what they divined or foretold should be were all lies, and never came to pass, and never would:

saying the Lord saith: and the Lord hath not sent them; they came to the people with a lie in their mouths, giving out that the Lord spoke by them; when they had no mission from him; nor any commission to say what they did; or any warrant from him for their prophecies:

and they have made [others] to hope that they would confirm the word; or, "that the word would be confirmed" e; that what was said by them would have its accomplishment; and that their prophecies would be fulfilled. By their solemn way of speaking; by the use they made of the name of the Lord; by the strong assurances they gave, and by their frequent repetition of their predictions, the people were brought to hope and believe that the event would answer to what they said; wherefore, instead of bringing them to a sense of their sins, and repentance for them, whereby the judgments of God would have been prevented, they hardened them in them, and hastened their ruin.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

And they have made others ... - Rather, “and they hope for the confirmation of their word.” They come to believe their own lies.
