The religion scholars and Pharisees led in a woman who had been caught in an act of adultery. They stood her in plain sight of everyone and said, "Teacher, this woman was caught red-handed in the act of adultery. Moses, in the Law, gives orders to stone such persons. What do you say?" They were trying to trap him into saying something incriminating so they could bring charges against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger in the dirt. They kept at him, badgering him. He straightened up and said, "The sinless one among you, go first: Throw the stone." Bending down again, he wrote some more in the dirt.

He sat down and began teaching them. 3Now the scribes and Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery. They made her stand in the center of the court, 4and they said to Him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in the very act of adultery. 5"Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women [to death]. So what do You say [to do with her—what is Your sentence]?" 6They said this to test Him, hoping that they would have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and began writing on the ground with His finger. 7However, when they persisted in questioning Him, He straightened up and said, "He who is without [any] sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." 8Then He stooped down again and started writing on the ground.9They listened [to His reply], and they began to go out one by one, starting with the oldest ones, until He was left alone, with the woman [standing there before Him] in the center of the court. 10Straightening up, Jesus said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?"
