Contextual Overview

20Now the rest of Israel, the priests and the Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, each on his own inheritance. 21But the temple servants were living in Ophel; Ziha and Gishpa were in charge of the temple servants. 22The overseer of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi the son of Bani, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Mica, from Asaph's sons, who were the singers in regard to the work of the house of God. 23For there was a command from the [Persian] king regarding the singers, as to their daily task. 24Pethahiah the son of Meshezabel, of the sons of Zerah the son of Judah, was the king's representative in all matters concerning the people. 25As for the villages with their fields, some sons (descendants) of Judah lived in Kiriath-arba and its towns, Dibon and its towns, and Jekabzeel and its villages, 26in Jeshua, in Moladah, in Beth-pelet, 27in Hazar-shual and in Beersheba and its towns, 28in Ziklag and in Meconah and its towns, 29in En-rimmon, in Zorah, and in Jarmuth,

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And of the Levites were divisions in Judah, and in Benjamin. They were scattered about, some here and some there, in both these tribes, for the better instruction of the people.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Of the Levites were divisions - i. e., “the Levites were scattered among various towns both in Judah and Benjamin.”

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Nehemiah 11:36. And of the Levites were divisions — The Levites had their dwellings in the divisions of Judah and Benjamin. This is probably the meaning: the Syriac says, They had the half of Judah and Benjamin; which is not likely.

THAT the people whose hearts were now turned towards the Lord, would make the best provision for the support of God's work, and all those engaged in it, we may naturally suppose; but this could not be very great, as the complete service was not yet established, and the Levites themselves were few in number.
