Contextual Overview

14 How say ye, We are mighty men, and valiant men for the war? 15 Moab is laid waste, and they are gone up into his cities, and his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter, saith the King, whose name is Jehovah of hosts. 16 The calamity of Moab is near to come, and his affliction hasteth fast. 17 All ye that are round about him, bemoan him, and all ye that know his name; say, How is the strong staff broken, the beautiful rod! 18 O thou daughter that dwellest in Dibon, come down from thy glory, and sit in thirst; for the destroyer of Moab is come up against thee, he hath destroyed thy strongholds. 19 O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way, and watch: ask him that fleeth, and her that escapeth; say, What hath been done? 20 Moab is put to shame; for it is broken down: wail and cry; tell ye it by the Arnon, that Moab is laid waste. 21 And judgment is come upon the plain country, upon Holon, and upon Jahzah, and upon Mephaath, 22 and upon Dibon, and upon Nebo, and upon Beth-diblathaim, 23 and upon Kiriathaim, and upon Beth-gamul, and upon Beth-meon,

Bible Verse Review
  from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge

Moab: Moab has long since ceased to be a nation; while the Jews, agreeably to the Divine promise - Jeremiah 46:28, though successively subdued and oppressed by the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Syro-Macedonians, and Romans - which have also all passed away, and are no more and dispersed over the face of the earth, subsist to this day as a distinct people from all the nations of the world!

from: Jeremiah 48:2, Jeremiah 30:11, Esther 3:8-13, Psalms 83:4-8, Isaiah 7:8, Matthew 7:2

magnified: Jeremiah 48:26-30, Proverbs 16:18, Isaiah 37:23, Daniel 11:36, 2 Thessalonians 2:4, Revelation 13:6

Reciprocal: 1 Samuel 5:11 - a deadly Isaiah 16:6 - have Isaiah 25:11 - he shall bring Daniel 8:11 - he magnified

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And Moab shall be destroyed from [being] a people,.... For some time, not always; since the captivity of Moab is promised to be returned, Jeremiah 48:47; or from being such a people as they had been, enjoying so much ease, wealth, power, and prosperity. Abarbinel takes it to be a comparative, and renders it, "more than a people"; that is, shall be destroyed more than any other people; but the former sense is best;

because he hath magnified [himself] against the Lord; the Targum is, against the people of the Lord; this is the cause of his destruction;

Jeremiah 48:47- :.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Jeremiah 48:42. Moab shall be destroyed from being a people — They shall not have a king or civil governor: and I doubt whether there be any evidence that they were ever reinstated in their national character. They were captivated by the Chaldeans; and probably many returned with the Jews on the edict of Cyrus: but as to their being an independent nation after this, where is the positive proof?
