Contextual Overview

1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, 2 Up! go down to the potter's house, and there I will let my words come to your ears. 3 Then I went down to the potter's house, and he was doing his work on the stones. 4 And when the vessel, which he was forming out of earth, got damaged in the hand of the potter, he made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make it. 5 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 6 O Israel, am I not able to do with you as this potter does? says the Lord. See, like earth in the potter's hand are you in my hands, O Israel. 7 Whenever I say anything about uprooting a nation or a kingdom, and smashing it and sending destruction on it; 8 If, in that very minute, that nation of which I was talking is turned away from its evil, my purpose of doing evil to them will be changed. 9 And whenever I say anything about building up a nation or a kingdom, and planting it; 10 If, in that very minute, it does evil in my eyes, going against my orders, then my good purpose, which I said I would do for them, will be changed.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying. The word of prophecy, as the Targum: this is a distinct prophecy from the former, though it may be connected with it; it referring to the destruction threatened in the latter part of the preceding chapter.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

In the first prophecy of the series Jeremiah 18:0, the fate of Jerusalem was still undetermined; a long line of kings might yet reign there in splendor, and the city be inhabited forever. This was possible only so long as it was still undecided whether Josiah’s efforts would end in a national reformation or not, and before Jehoiakim threw the weight of the kingly office into the opposite balance. In the present prophecy mercy is still offered to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, but they reject it Jeremiah 18:11-12. They have made their final choice: and thereupon follows the third prophecy of “the broken vessel” Jeremiah 19:1-15 in which the utter overthrow of city and kingdom is foretold. We should thus place this prophecy of the potter very early in the reign of Jehoiakim; and that of the broken vessel at the commencement of his fourth year. This internal evidence is confirmed by external proof.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

CHAPTER XVIII

The type of the potter's vessel, and its signification, 1-10.

The inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem exhorted to repentance,

11;

but on their refusal, (which is represented to be as unnatural

as if a man should prefer the snowy Lebanon or barren rock to a

fruitful plain, or other waters to the cool stream of the

fountain,) their destruction is predicted, 12-17.

In consequence of these plain reproofs and warnings of

Jeremiah, a conspiracy is formed against him, 18.

This leads him to appeal to God for his integrity, 19, 20;

who puts a most dreadful curse in the mouth of his prophet,

strongly indicative of the terrible fate of his enemies, 21-23.

NOTES ON CHAP. XVIII

Verse Jeremiah 18:1. The word which came to Jeremiah — This discourse is supposed to have been delivered some time in the reign of Jehoiakim, probably within the first three years.
