THE MESSAGE
The religion scholars from Jerusalem came down spreading rumors that he was working black magic, using devil tricks to impress them with spiritual power. Jesus confronted their slander with a story: "Does it make sense to send a devil to catch a devil, to use Satan to get rid of Satan? A constantly squabbling family disintegrates. If Satan were fighting Satan, there soon wouldn't be any Satan left. Do you think it's possible in broad daylight to enter the house of an awake, able-bodied man, and walk off with his possessions unless you tie him up first? Tie him up, though, and you can clean him out.
Simplified Cowboy Version
The religious experts came all the way from Jerusalem, but they said he was possessed by the devil and that is how he was able to cast out the demons.

Contextual Overview

22 And the scribes whiche came downe from Hierusalem, sayde: He hath Beelzebub, and by the chiefe deuyll, casteth he out deuyls. 23 And he called them vnto hym, & sayde vnto them in parables: Howe can Satan driue out Satan? 24 And yf a realme be deuided agaynst it selfe, that realme can not endure. 25 And yf a house be deuided agaynst it selfe, that house can not continue. 26 And yf Satan make insurrection agaynst him selfe & be deuided, he can not continue, but hath an ende. 27 No man can enter into a strong mans house, and take away his goodes, except he first bynde the strong man, and then spoyle his house. 28 Ueryly I say vnto you, al sinnes shalbe forgeuen vnto the chyldren of men, & blasphemies wherewith so euer they haue blasphemed: 29 But he that speaketh blasphemie agaynst the holy ghoste, hath neuer forgeuenesse, but is in daunger of eternall dampnation. 30 For they sayde: he hath an vncleane spirite.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And the Scribes which came down from Jerusalem,.... Or, "but the Scribes", c. who had an aversion to Christ, and a different opinion of him: these were they, who having heard much of the doctrine and miracles of Christ, came down from Jerusalem, which lay in the upper, and higher part of the land of Israel, into Galilee, a low country, to make their observations upon him and take every advantage they could against him, being men, in their way, letter learned, and artful, and cunning: these

said, he hath Beelzebub: or, as the Syriac and Persic versions render it, "Beelzebub is in him": sometimes they call him Beelzebub; sometimes say that he cast out devils by him; and here, that he had him, or was in him; Beelzebub possessed him, and assisted him, and there was a confederacy and familiarity between them:

and by the prince of devils casteth he out devils; for so they reckoned Beelzebub to be; :-,

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

And the scribes ... - See the notes at Matthew 12:24-32. The occasion of their saying this was, that he had healed a man possessed with a devil. The scribes, who came from Jerusalem to watch his conduct, charged him with having made a compact or agreement with the prince of the devils.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse 22. He hath Beelzebub — See Clarke on Matthew 12:24-26.
