Contextual Overview

17 O Lord, when wilt thou look upon me? Deliver my soul from their mischief, mine only-begotten one from the lions. 18 I will give thanks to thee even in a great congregation: in an abundant people I will praise thee. 19 Let not them that are mine enemies without a cause rejoice against me; who hate me for nothing, and wink with their eyes. 20 For to me they spoke peaceably, but imagined deceits in their anger. 21 And they opened wide their mouth upon me; they said Aha, aha, our eyes have seen it. 22 Thou hast seen it, O Lord: keep not silence: O Lord, withdraw not thyself from me. 23 Awake, O Lord, and attend to my judgment, even to my cause, my God and my Lord. 24 Judge me, O Lord, according to thy righteousness, O Lord my God; and let them not rejoice against me. 25 Let them not say in their hearts, Aha, aha, it is pleasing to our soul: neither let them say, We have devoured him. 26 Let them be confounded and ashamed together that rejoice at my afflictions: let them be clothed with shame and confusion that speak great swelling words against me.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Yea, they opened their mouth wide against me,.... In laughter, scorn, and derision; see Psalms 22:7;

[and] said, Aha, aha: a word expressive of joy; and the doubling it shows the greatness of it;

our eye hath seen [it]; what their heart wished for; namely, the distress of him, whose enemies they were.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Yea, they opened their mouth wide against me - See the notes at Psalms 22:13.

And said, Aha, aha! - See Psalms 40:15; Psalms 70:3. The language is that which we use when we “detect” another in doing wrong - in doing what he meant to conceal.

Our eye hath seen it - We are not dependent on the reports of others. We have seen it with our own eyes. We have found you out. We cannot be mistaken in regard to it. The reference is to some supposed “detection” of misconduct on the part of David, and the joy and triumph of such a supposed detection.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Psalms 35:21. They opened their mouth wide — Gaped upon me to express their contempt.

And said, Aha, aha, our eye hath seen it.] They said, האח האח heach, heach, the last syllable in each word being a protracted strongly guttural sound, marking insult and triumph at the same time. It is the word which we translate Ah, Psalms 35:25.
