Contextual Overview

1 The Lord said: 2 Ezekiel, son of man, condemn the people of Edom 3 and say to them: I, the Lord God, am now your enemy! And I will turn your nation into an empty wasteland, 4 leaving your towns in ruins. Your land will be a desert, and then you will know that I am the Lord . 5 People of Edom, not only have you been Israel's longtime enemy, you simply watched when disaster wiped out its people as punishment for their sins. 6 And so, as surely as I am the living Lord God, you are guilty of murder and must be put to death. 7 I will destroy your nation and kill anyone who travels through it. 8 Dead bodies will cover your mountains and fill up your valleys, 9 and your land will lie in ruins forever. No one will live in your towns ever again. You will know that I am the Lord .

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me,.... After the prophecy concerning the shepherds of Israel, and the goats of the flock, and of their oppressions of the sheep and lambs, the weak of the flock; and concerning the Messiah, and the blessings of grace promised the church in the latter day; came another concerning the destruction of her enemies, under the name of Seir or Edom:

saying: as follows:

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

In Ezek. 35–36 we see the devastation of Edom, and the restoration of Israel. Edom was included among the nations against which Ezekiel prophesied Ezekiel 25:12-14. But its fuller doom was reserved for this place, because Edom was one of the surrounding nations that profited at first by Judah’s fall, and because it helps by way of contrast to bring out in a marked way the better future designed for Israel. Edom is the God-hating, God-opposing power, ever distinguished for its bitter hatred against Israel; and so the ruin of Edom is the triumph of Israel in the power of God.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

CHAPTER XXXV

The prophet having formerly predicted the ruin of Edom, the

same with Seir, (Ezekiel 25:12,)

now resumes and pursues the subject at greater length,

intimating, as did also Isaiah, (Isaiah 21:11-12,)

that though other nations should recover their liberty after

the fall of the Babylonian monarchy, the Edomites should

continue in bondage for their very despiteful behaviour towards

the children of Israel in the day of their calamity, 1-15.
