1 The Lord told me to say: Announce what will happen and don't leave anything out. 2 Raise the signal flags; shout so all nations can hear— Babylon will be captured! Marduk, Babylon's god, will be ashamed and terrified, and his idols broken. 3 The attack on the Babylonians will come from the north; they and their animals will run, leaving the land empty. 4 The Lord said: People of Israel and Judah, when these things happen you will weep, and together you will return to your land and worship me, the Lord your God. 5 You will ask the way to Zion and then come and join with me in making an agreement you won't break or forget. 6 My people, you are lost sheep abandoned by their shepherds in the mountains. You don't even remember your resting place. 7 I am your true pastureland, the one who gave hope to your ancestors. But you abandoned me, so when your enemies found you, they felt no guilt as they gobbled you down. 8 Escape from Babylonia, my people. Get out of that country! Don't wait for anyone else.

Remove out of the midst of Babylon, and go forth out of the land of the Chaldeans,.... This, in the literal sense, is a call to the Jews in Babylon, and in other parts of Chaldea, to go out from thence upon the proclamation of Cyrus; and especially to the chief of them, to animate the rest, and set them an example; such as Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Ezra, and others: and, in the mystical sense, is a call to the people of God in Rome, and the antichristian states, to come out from thence, a little before the destruction thereof, as in Revelation 18:4; which seems to refer to this passage:
and be as the he goats before the flocks; which walk stately and nimbly, cheerfully and readily, without fear and dread, boldly and confidently, and encourage others to follow them. The Targum is,
"as princes at the head of their people.''

Verse Jeremiah 50:8. Remove out of the midst of Babylon — The sentence of destruction is gone out against it; prepare for your flight, that ye be not overwhelmed in its ruin.
Be as the he-goats before the flocks. — Who always run to the head of the flock, giving the example for others to follow. This may be addressed to the elders and persons of authority among the people.
