THE MESSAGE
But even though Jehoshaphat was very rich and much honored, he made a marriage alliance with Ahab of Israel. Some time later he paid a visit to Ahab at Samaria. Ahab celebrated his visit with a feast—a huge barbecue with all the lamb and beef you could eat. But Ahab had a hidden agenda; he wanted Jehoshaphat's support in attacking Ramoth Gilead. Then Ahab brought it into the open: "Will you join me in attacking Ramoth Gilead?" Jehoshaphat said, "You bet. I'm with you all the way; you can count on me and my troops."
New American Standard Bible (1995)
Now Jehoshaphat had great riches and honor; and he allied himself by marriage with Ahab.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Now Jehoshaphat had riches and honour in abundance,.... Still more and more, see 2 Chronicles 17:5, and which moved Ahab to desire friendship and affinity with him, to which Jehoshaphat agreed:

and joined affinity with Ahab; king of Israel, married his son Joram to Athaliah, a daughter of Ahab by Jezebel of Zidon; which marriage proved of bad consequence to Jehoshaphat and his family.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

The present chapter runs parallel with Kings, which it closely follows, only adding a few touches.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

CHAPTER XVIII

Jehoshaphat joins affinity with Ahab, king of Israel, 1, 2;

who invites him to assist him in the war against the Syrians,

to which Jehoshaphat agrees, 3.

They consult the prophets concerning the success of the war;

and all, except Micaiah, promise Ahab victory, 4-17.

Micaiah relates his vision concerning the lying spirit in the

mouth of Ahab's prophets, 18-22.

Zedekiah, a false prophet, opposes Micaiah; and Micaiah is put

in prison, 23-27.

Both the kings go against the Syrians; the confederate armies

are defeated, and the king of Israel slain, 28-31.

NOTES ON CHAP. XVIII
