Contextual Overview

1In the third year of Israel’s King Hoshea son of Elah, Hezekiah son of Ahaz became king of Judah. 2He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Abi daughter of Zechariah. 3He did what was right in the Lord’s sight just as his ancestor David had done. 4He removed the high places, shattered the sacred pillars, and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke into pieces the bronze snake that Moses made, for until then the Israelites were burning incense to it. It was called Nehushtan. 5Hezekiah relied on the Lord God of Israel; not one of the kings of Judah was like him, either before him or after him. 6He remained faithful to the Lord and did not turn from following him but kept the commands the Lord had commanded Moses.7The Lord was with him, and wherever he went he prospered. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him. 8He defeated the Philistines as far as Gaza and its borders, from watchtower to fortified city.

Bible Verse Review
  from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge

he clave: None of the kings of Judah, from the time of the division of the kingdom, equalled Hezekiah in the stedfastness and simplicity of his dependence upon the Lord; in which he aspired to an equality with his progenitor David, who had reigned over the whole land. Even Asa, through weakness of faith, sought the assistance of a heathen prince; and Jehoshaphat formed an alliance with idolatrous Ahab; but Hezekiah clave to the Lord, in entire confidence and unreserved obedience, to the end of his life. Deuteronomy 10:20, Joshua 23:8, Acts 11:23

Gill's Notes on the Bible

For he clave to the Lord,.... To his worship and service; to the fear of the Lord, as the Targum:

and departed not from following him; from his worship, as the same paraphrase:

but kept his commandments, which the Lord commanded Moses; both moral, ceremonial, and judicial.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Other good kings, as Solomon, Jehoshaphat, Joash, and Amaziah, had fallen away in their later years. Hezekiah remained firm to the last. The phrase “cleaving to God” is frequent in Deuteronomy, but rare elsewhere.
