Contextual Overview

26Your rowers have brought youonto the high seas, but the east wind has wrecked youin the heart of the sea. 27Your wealth, merchandise, and goods, your sailors and captains, those who repair your leaks, those who barter for your goods, and all the warriors on board, with all the other people within you, sink into the heart of the seaon the day of your downfall. 28“‘The countryside shakesat the sound of your sailors’ cries. 29All the oarsmendisembark from their ships. The sailors and all the captains of the seastand on the shore.30Because of you, they raise their voicesand cry out bitterly. They throw dust on their heads;they roll in ashes. 31They shave their heads because of youand wrap themselves in sackcloth. They weep over youwith deep anguish and bitter mourning. 32“‘In their wailing they lament for you, mourning over you:“Who was like Tyre, silenced in the middle of the sea? 33When your merchandise was unloaded from the seas, you satisfied many peoples. You enriched the kings of the earthwith your abundant wealth and goods. 34Now you are wrecked by the seain the depths of the waters;your goods and the people within youhave gone down. 35All the inhabitants of the coasts and islandsare appalled at you.Their kings shudder with fear;their faces are contorted.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And all that handle the oar, the mariners, and all the pilots of the sea,.... Inferior officers, and the common people; though this may be literally understood of all sorts of seafaring people, differently employed in ships; some at the oar; some at the sails; and others at the helm; but all shall quit their posts,

and shall come down from their ships; either there being no further business for them, an entire stop being put to trade, through the fall of Tyre; or because of danger, and to save themselves, would leave the ship, and betake to their boats, and make for land: hence it follows,

they shall stand upon the land; upon the continent, being safely arrived; looking upon the shipwrecks, and bewailing the loss of Tyre, as in the next verse.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

As Tyre is figured by a large vessel, so are the subject-states by smaller boats which accompany the great ship. These terrified by the storm approach the land. Tyre is hopelessly swallowed up, crew and all, in the midst of the sea. The small crafts escape to shore.
