Contextual Overview

10The elders of Daughter Zionsit on the ground in silence. They have thrown dust on their headsand put on sackcloth. The young women of Jerusalemhave bowed their heads to the ground. 11My eyes are worn out from weeping;I am churning within. My heart is poured out in griefbecause of the destruction of my dear people, because infants and nursing babies faintin the streets of the city. 12They cry out to their mothers,“Where is the grain and wine?” as they faint like the woundedin the streets of the city,as their life pours outin the arms of their mothers. 13What can I say on your behalf? What can I compare you to, Daughter Jerusalem? What can I liken you to,so that I may console you, Virgin Daughter Zion? For your ruin is as vast as the sea.Who can heal you? 14Your prophets saw visions for youthat were empty and deceptive;they did not reveal your iniquityand so restore your fortunes. They saw pronouncements for youthat were empty and misleading. 15All who pass byscornfully clap their hands at you. They hiss and shake their headsat Daughter Jerusalem:Is this the city that was calledthe perfection of beauty, the joy of the whole earth? 16All your enemiesopen their mouths against you. They hiss and gnash their teeth, saying, “We have swallowed her up.This is the day we have waited for!We have lived to see it.” 17The Lord has done what he planned;he has accomplished his decree, which he ordained in days of old.He has demolished without compassion, letting the enemy gloat over youand exalting the horn of your adversaries. 18The hearts of the people cry out to the Lord.Wall of Daughter Zion, let your tears run down like a riverday and night.Give yourself no reliefand your eyes no rest. 19Arise, cry out in the nightfrom the first watch of the night.Pour out your heart like waterbefore the Lord’s presence.Lift up your hands to himfor the lives of your childrenwho are fainting from hungerat the head of every street.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets,.... Young men and old men, virgins and aged women; these promiscuously lay on the ground in the public streets, fainting and dying for want of food; or lay killed there by the sword of the enemy; the Chaldeans sparing neither age nor sex. The Targum interprets it of their sleeping on the ground,

"young men slept on the ground in the villages, and old men who used to lie on pillows of fine wool, and on beds of ivory;''

but the former sense is confirmed by what follows:

my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword; by the sword of the Chaldeans, when they entered the city:

thou hast slain [them] in the day of thine anger: thou hast killed,

[and] not pitied; the Chaldeans were only instruments; it was the Lord's doing; it was according to his will; it was what he had purposed and decreed; what he had solemnly declared and threatened; and now in his providence brought about, for the sins of the Jews, by which he was provoked to anger; and so gave them up into the hands of their enemies, to slay them without mercy; and which is here owned; the church takes notice of the hand of God in all this.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Omit “them” and “and,” which weaken the intensity of the passage.
