Contextual Overview

1 This is the message that came to Jeremiah from the Lord : 2 "Jeremiah, go down to the potter's house. I will give you my message there." 3 So I went down to the potter's house and saw him working with clay at the wheel. 4 He was making a pot from clay. But there was something wrong with the pot. So the potter used that clay to make another pot. With his hands he shaped the pot the way he wanted it to be. 5 Then this message from the Lord came to me: 6 "Family of Israel, you know that I can do the same thing with you. You are like the clay in the potter's hands, and I am the potter." This message is from the Lord . 7 "There may come a time when I will speak about a nation or a kingdom that I will pull up by its roots or tear down and destroy it. 8 But if the people of that nation change their hearts and lives and stop doing evil things, I will change my mind and not bring on them the disaster I planned. 9 There may come another time when I speak about a nation that I will build up or plant. 10 But if I see that nation doing evil things and not obeying me, I will think again about the good I had planned to do for them.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying. The word of prophecy, as the Targum: this is a distinct prophecy from the former, though it may be connected with it; it referring to the destruction threatened in the latter part of the preceding chapter.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

In the first prophecy of the series Jeremiah 18:0, the fate of Jerusalem was still undetermined; a long line of kings might yet reign there in splendor, and the city be inhabited forever. This was possible only so long as it was still undecided whether Josiah’s efforts would end in a national reformation or not, and before Jehoiakim threw the weight of the kingly office into the opposite balance. In the present prophecy mercy is still offered to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, but they reject it Jeremiah 18:11-12. They have made their final choice: and thereupon follows the third prophecy of “the broken vessel” Jeremiah 19:1-15 in which the utter overthrow of city and kingdom is foretold. We should thus place this prophecy of the potter very early in the reign of Jehoiakim; and that of the broken vessel at the commencement of his fourth year. This internal evidence is confirmed by external proof.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

CHAPTER XVIII

The type of the potter's vessel, and its signification, 1-10.

The inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem exhorted to repentance,

11;

but on their refusal, (which is represented to be as unnatural

as if a man should prefer the snowy Lebanon or barren rock to a

fruitful plain, or other waters to the cool stream of the

fountain,) their destruction is predicted, 12-17.

In consequence of these plain reproofs and warnings of

Jeremiah, a conspiracy is formed against him, 18.

This leads him to appeal to God for his integrity, 19, 20;

who puts a most dreadful curse in the mouth of his prophet,

strongly indicative of the terrible fate of his enemies, 21-23.

NOTES ON CHAP. XVIII

Verse Jeremiah 18:1. The word which came to Jeremiah — This discourse is supposed to have been delivered some time in the reign of Jehoiakim, probably within the first three years.
