¹ This message came from the Lord during the first year that Jehoiakim son of Josiah was king of Judah. ² The Lord said, "Jeremiah, stand in the Temple yard of the Lord . Give this message to all the people of Judah who are coming to worship at the Temple of the Lord . Tell them everything that I tell you to speak. Don't leave out any part of my message. ³ Maybe they will listen and obey my message. Maybe they will stop living such evil lives. If they change, I will change my mind about my plans to punish them. I am planning this punishment because of the many evil things they have done. ⁴ You will say to them, ‘This is what the Lord says: I gave my teachings to you. You must obey me and follow my teachings. ⁵ You must listen to what my servants say to you. The prophets are my servants. I have sent my prophets to you again and again, but you did not listen to them. ⁶ If you don't obey me, I will make my Temple in Jerusalem just like my Holy Tent at Shiloh. People all over the world will think of Jerusalem when they ask for bad things to happen to other cities.'"

So that the prophecy of this chapter, and the facts and events connected with it, were before the prophecy of the preceding chapter, though here related; that being in the fourth year, this in the beginning of Jehoiakim's reign. Josiah was lately dead; Jehoahaz his son reigned but three months, and then was deposed by Pharaohnecho king of Egypt; and this Jehoiakim, another son of Josiah, who before was called Eliakim, was set on the throne; and quickly after his coming to it

came this word from the Lord, saying; as follows, to the prophet. This was in the year of the world 3394, and before Christ 610, according to Bishop Usher a; with whom agree Mr, Whiston b, and the authors of the Universal History c.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Jeremiah 26:0 is a narrative of the danger to which Jeremiah was exposed by reason of the prophecy contained in Jeremiah 7:0 and should be read in connection with it. Jeremiah 26:4-6 contain a summary of the prediction contained in Jeremiah 7:0, and that again is but an outline of what was a long address.

CHAPTER XXVI

Jeremiah, by the commend of God, goes into the court of the

Lord's house; and foretells the destruction of the temple and

city, if not prevented by the speedy repentance of the people,

1-7.

By this unwelcome prophecy his life was in great danger;

although saved by the influence of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan,

who makes a masterly defense for the prophet, 8-18.

Urijah is condemned, but escapes to Egypt; whence he is brought

back by Jehoiakim, and slain, 20-23.

Ahikam befriends Jeremiah, 24.

Verse Jeremiah 26:1. In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim — As this prophecy must have been delivered in the first or second year of the reign of Jehoiakim, it is totally out of its place here. Dr. Blayney puts it before chap. xxxvi. (Jeremiah 36:0); and Dr. Dahler immediately after chap. ix. (Jeremiah 9:0), and before chap. xlvi. (Jeremiah 46:0)
