THE MESSAGE
"Why will your bull-god Apis run off? Because God will drive him off. Your ragtag army will fall to pieces. The word is passing through the ranks, ‘Let's get out of here while we still can. Let's head for home and save our skins.' When they get home they'll nickname Pharaoh ‘Big-Talk-Bad-Luck.' As sure as I am the living God" —the King's Decree, God -of-the-Angel-Armies is his name— "A conqueror is coming: like Tabor, singular among mountains; like Carmel, jutting up from the sea! So pack your bags for exile, you coddled daughters of Egypt, For Memphis will soon be nothing, a vacant lot grown over with weeds.
New American Standard Bible (1995)
"Why have your mighty ones become prostrate? They do not stand because the LORD has thrust them down.

Contextual Overview

12 The nations will hear you crying. Your cries will be heard all over the earth. One ‘brave soldier' will run into another ‘brave soldier.' And both ‘brave soldiers' will fall down together." 13 This is the message the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about Nebuchadnezzar coming to attack Egypt. 14 "Announce this message in Egypt. Tell it in the city of Migdol. Tell it in Memphis and Tahpanhes. ‘Get ready for war, because people all around you are being killed with swords.' 15 Egypt, your strong soldiers will be killed. They will not be able to stand because the Lord will push them down. 16 They will stumble again and again. They will fall over each other. They will say, ‘Get up; let's go back to our own people. Let us go back to our homeland. Our enemy is defeating us. We must get away.' 17 In their homelands, those soldiers will say, ‘Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, is only a lot of noise. His time of glory is over.'" 18 This message is from the King. The King is the Lord All-Powerful. "I promise, as surely as I live, a powerful leader will come. He will be like Mount Tabor or Mount Carmel among smaller mountains. 19 People of Egypt, pack your things. Get ready for captivity, because Memphis will be a ruined, empty land. Those cities will be destroyed, and no one will live there. 20 "Egypt is like a beautiful cow. But a horsefly is coming from the north to attack her. 21 The hired soldiers in Egypt's army are like fat calves. They will all turn and run away. They will not stand strong against the attack. Their time of destruction is coming. They will soon be punished.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Why are thy valiant [men] swept away?.... As with a mighty torrent, or a sweeping rain; so the word is used in Proverbs 28:3; to which the Chaldean army may be compared; which came with such irresistible force as to drive the Egyptians from their posts, so that they could not stand their ground. The Septuagint renders it,

"why does Apis flee from thee? thy choice ox does not continue.''

Which was the god of the Egyptians, they worshipped in the form of an ox; this could not protect them, though thought by them to be very mighty and powerful; so Aelianus i says Apis with the Egyptians is believed to be a most powerful deity; yet could not save them; but the word signifies their nobles, their mighty men of war, their generals and officers, at least their valiant soldiers; who yet were not able to stand the tide of power that came against them. The reason was,

because the Lord did drive them; by means of the Chaldeans; he dispirited them; he put them into a panic, and they fled from their posts; there is no standing against the Lord.

i De Animal. l. 11. c. 10.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Translate it: “Why is thy mighty one cast down? He stood not, because Yahweh thrust him down.” The “mighty one” is explained by the Septuagint to be the bull Apis. Thus:

(1) the chief deity of Egypt Jeremiah 46:15;

(2) the army of mercenaries Jeremiah 46:16;

(3) the king, Pharaoh Jeremiah 46:17, are the three upon whom the Egyptians trusted.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Jeremiah 46:15. They stood not, because the Lord did drive them. — The Lord panic-struck them, and drove them back.
