THE MESSAGE
Joshua's Charge A long time later, after God had given Israel rest from all their surrounding enemies, and Joshua was a venerable old man, Joshua called all Israel together—elders, chiefs, judges, and officers. Then he spoke to them: "I'm an old man. I've lived a long time. You have seen everything that God has done to these nations because of you. He did it because he's God , your God. He fought for you.
New American Standard Bible (1995)
"And you have seen all that the LORD your God has done to all these nations because of you, for the LORD your God is He who has been fighting for you.

Contextual Overview

1 The Lord gave Israel peace from their enemies around them. He made Israel safe. Many years passed, and Joshua became very old. 2 At this time Joshua called a meeting of all the older leaders, heads of families, judges, and officers of the Israelites. Joshua said, "I have grown very old. 3 You have seen what the Lord did to our enemies. He did this to help us. The Lord your God fought for you. 4 Remember that I told you that your people could have the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea in the west. I promised to give you that land, but you don't control it yet. I have taken the land away from those nations, but they are still living there. 5 But the Lord your God will force the people living there to leave. You will take that land. The Lord will force them to leave, just as he promised. 6 "You must be careful to obey every command written in the Book of the Law of Moses. Never turn away from that law. 7 There are still some people living among us who are not Israelites. They worship their own gods. Don't become friends with them. Don't serve or worship their gods. 8 You must continue to follow the Lord your God. You have done this in the past, and you must continue to do it. 9 "The Lord helped you defeat many great and powerful nations. He forced them to leave. No nation has been able to defeat you. 10 With his help, one man from Israel could defeat 1000 enemy soldiers, because the Lord your God fights for you, as he promised.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And ye have seen all that the Lord your God hath done unto all those nations because of you,.... How he had destroyed them, and driven them out of their habitations to make room for them, meaning the seven nations of the Canaanites:

for the Lord your God [is] he that hath fought for you; Joshua does not attribute any of the things that were done to his own valour, nor theirs, nor so much as mentions himself or them as instruments, but wholly ascribes all to the Lord, who fought their battles for them, and conquered their enemies, and subdued them under them; the Targum is,

"the Word of the Lord fought for you;''

the Captain of the host of the Lord, Joshua 5:14.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Joshua 23:3. For the Lord your God is he that hath fought for you. — There is much both of piety and modesty in this address. It was natural for the Israelites to look on their veteran, worn-out general, who had led them on from conquest to conquest, with profound respect; and to be ready to say, "Had we not had such a commander, we had never got possession of this good land." Joshua corrects this opinion, and shows them that all their enemies had been defeated, because the Lord their God had fought for them. That the battle was the Lord's, and not his; and that God alone should have the glory.
