Contextual Overview

1 Bvt Iob answered, and said, 2 I haue oft times heard such things: miserable comforters are ye all. 3 Shall there be none ende of wordes of winde? or what maketh thee bold so to answere? 4 I could also speake as yee doe: (but woulde God your soule were in my soules stead) I could keepe you company in speaking, and could shake mine head at you, 5 But I woulde strengthen you with my mouth, and the comfort of my lips should asswage your sorowe.

Then Job answered and said. As soon as Eliphaz had done speaking, Job stood up, and made the following reply.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

CHAPTER XVI

Job replies to Eliphaz, and through him to all his friends,

who, instead of comforting him, had added to his misfortunes;

and shows that, had they been in his circumstances, he would

have treated them in a different manner, 1-5.

Enters into an affecting detail of his suffering, 6-16.

Consoles himself with the consciousness of his own innocence,

of which he takes God to witness, and patiently expects a

termination of all his sufferings by death. 17-22.
