Contextual Overview

1 WHEN he came near to Jerusalem, to wards Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, 2 And he said to them, Go to the village in front of us; and as soon as you enter it, you will find a colt which is tied up, on which no man of the sons of men has ever ridden; untie it and bring it. 3 And if any man should say to you, Why are you doing this? say to him that our Lord needs it; and immediately he will send it here. 4 So they went and found the colt tied by the door, outside, in the street. And as they were untying it, 5 Some of the men who stood there said to them, What are you doing, are you untying the colt? 6 And they said to them as Jesus had instructed them; and they permitted them. 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus, and they put their garments on it, and Jesus rode on it. 8 And many spread their garments on the road; and others cut down branches from the trees, and spread them on the road. 9 And those who were in front of him, and those who were behind him, were crying and saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; 10 And blessed is the kingdom of our father David, which comes; Hosanna in the highest.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And they went their way,.... The two disciples went to the village, where Christ sent them, without objecting any difficulties that might present, in the execution of these orders:

and found the colt tied by the door without; in the street, fastened to the door of the owner's house, at the town's end:

in a place where two ways met; to go into and out of the village; at the corner house, where two ways met; so that the place was very public, and such an affair could not be transacted, without being seen:

and they loose him; as soon as ever they came to the place, they immediately began to untie the colt, and were going away with him.
